How to unlock the Reilly's Rangers achievement in Fallout 3 - Definitive Guide

I recommend having a fission battery in your pack before starting your quest so you won't have to backtrack later. If you don't have one you can get one during the quest so don't worry.

You will find Reilly passed out in the chop shop in the Underground(which is located in the museum of History). Try to awake her and then talk to the Ghoul Doctor and he will give her an injection to wake her up. When she wakes she will tell you the story of what happened and also tell you that her rangers are bogged down on the roof of the Statesman Hotel Restaurant. Also she tells you have a ranger who fell by the name of Theo. Theo carried the ammo for the rangers so you are tasked to find it. I found him on some stairs in the hotel while trying to complete the quest so he's not to hard to miss. If you enter the front door of the hotel you will find you can't go up because the elevator is shut down. There is another way to get to the upper floors though. If you are outside and looking at the front door of the hotel go right and then head behind the hotel. After about 50 yards you will see a hospital on your right enter it and head to the second floor (beware or mines and traps in this area and in the hotel itself). From the upper floors of the hospital there is a scaffold that goes across to the hotel. Take it and then work your way to the roof. There will be tons of mutants so it can be quite frustrating. When you get to the roof talk to butch. He can repair the elevator if you have a fission battery. If you don't have one, no worries there is one on the floor below in a closet. Give Butch the fission battery and then take the elevator down. You will have to fight a few more mutants when you get to the bottom floor. Exit the building and you will have to go to the Ranger Compound. When you get there talk to Reilly.

Rewards
Armor(not sure what type) or a mini-gun called eugene that does more damage then a normal mini-gun

I got this mission by tuning in to a distress radio signal just before I entered the museum of history (the one with the declaration of independence). This is an alternative to wake up Reilly in the Underworld hospital.

my comment was not correct, after picking up the radio signal, you still have to wake up reilly in underworld.

The armor you get is the best non-powered armor in the game. It's the "Ranger Battle Armor" and you can find more information about it here.

You should note that a certain talk option allows you to go to the ranger compound first and so stock up on ammo.

I'm stuck in this quest on the roof. Every time I approach the Rangers an explosion happens on the platform they are on, they turn hostile against me and I lose the quest. Has this happened to anyone else and does anyone know how to get around this?

For those of you who were wondering. how the heck do i get to this hospital? well, after having spent 2 hours wandering the "dc hell hole" i figured it out. Just either walk or fast travel to anacosta crossing, go in and go to the platform over the tracks, walk straight across and go out the other side. you should be able to walk down some streets and find the hospital. hope it helps!!! :P

You can either acquire this quest from a distress signal near the National Archives or from speaking with Reilly herself in the Underworld. She is in the medical station. You will need to convince the doctor to wake her up (speech challenge) or try yourself (medical challenge). She needs you to rescure her rangers from on top of the Statesmen Hotel. You can only get inside from the second floor, through a walkway from the Our Lady of Hope Hospital. Head to the hospital, through the walkway and to the roof of the hotel. The rangers need you to find a Fission Battery to repair the elevator. Head back to the room that accessed the roof and find a robot in a closet on the first level. Search it for the battery. You can of course grab this on your way instead of backtracking after. Once the rangers fix the elevator, you now just need to fight your way out of the hotel.

See Reilly's Rangers for more specific info.

MISSABLE

WARNING:
Do not bring Fawkes or Dogmeat with you when attempting this mission else the Rangers will turn hostile which will auto-fail the mission, thus rendering the trophy unobtainable on your current playthrough (credit to awb555 and rongaryen for this info).

There are several ways to start this Quest but the easiest two are:

  1. Pick up the Ranger SoS signal when you are near the Statesman Hotel.
  2. Talk to Reilly in the "Chop Shop" area of Underworld in the Museum Of History.

For the purposes of this Guide we will be going with option 2.

When you first see Reilly she will be in a coma and to bring her out of it you need to speak to both the Doctor and the Nurse. Speak to both a few times until the doctor gives you the option to bring her out of the coma but you will need a high Speech level to do so else you will have to do it yourself with a high medicine level. After she wakes, quiz Reilly about what happened to her and her squad then she will ask you to rescue her squad from The Statesman Hotel. When pressed for more info, Reilly will give you directions to the hotel and the access code to her base.

Reilly will also ask you to find the body of one of her squadmates called Theo who was carrying most of their ammunition, this is optional but we recommend doing it as the extra ammo will come in handy.

To gain access to the Hotel, you will need to go across the road to the Our Lady Of Hope Hospital and make your way upstairs to the second floor and open the door at the end. After you open the door, you will have to cross a fallen Radio Mast to get to the other side (don’t save on the Mast or have the radio active when crossing, because both are known to freeze the game and corrupt your save). Once you have crossed over you need to drop through the hole in the floor to access the door to the hotel.

After gaining access to the Hotel, make your way upwards to the Restaurant and the roof. When you get to the roof you will be stopped by Butcher who will want to know what you're doing there, to which you'll answer that Reilly sent you. During the conversation, Butcher will tell you that the lift is broken and you'll need to retrieve a Fission Battery from a busted Protectron that's downstairs (unless you have already retrieved it or bought another one with you, though there's a chance the Protectron that contains the Fission battery will be partially clipped into the floor which may make it difficult to collect the battery). Before you go off to collect the battery, talk to the rest of the squad and hand over the ammo from Theo's box. Once you have the Fission Battery, give it to Donovan, exit to the ground floor of the hotel then kill all the Super Mutants there and leave the building.

After leaving the hotel, go to the Ranger HQ and talk to Reilly. Your journey to the Ranger Compound will not be easy as the route is full of Radroaches, Ghouls, Raiders and Super Mutants so bring plenty of ammo and health items. Follow the Quest marker through the Metro system until you get to Seward Square Southeast, now follow the marker until you see the mark of the Rangers (2 crossed swords on a Green background) as this indicates you're not far away from the Compound.

The trophy will pop after Reilly gives you your reward which is a choice between a Minigun or a set of Ranger Armour. You can also choose to do so mapping for Reilly and get paid for doing so. The Ranger Compound will become a valid safehouse for you to stay at once the Quest is complete.

Note: In one of the rooms on the second floor of the Statesman Hotel is a Holotape from Sydney's father, pick it up and listen to it. The next time you see Sydney you can tell her about it and she'll give you her custom SMG.

You can receive this quest by hearing a radio signal at the entrance to the National Archives. Or, after talking with Reilly herself, then you need to go to the Dungeon to Dr. Barrows in the Cutting Room and persuade him (you need the eloquence skill) to cure Reilly, or if the skill allows (you need 60 medicine), then cure yourself. Upon completion of the quest you will receive an achievement.
