How to unlock the Hostile Takeover achievement in Fallout 4 - Definitive Guide

In order to get this achievement you need to establish 8 raider Outposts, not supply settlements as they do not count.

To get the ability to set up Outposts you need to start the quest "Home Sweet Home" which teaches you how to. The quest also requires you to set up 3 raider outposts which leaves 5 more outposts to do on your own.
Keep in mind that if you moved Shank to an Outpost and complete the quest you are prompted to return to Nuka World for the next main quest, Don't, instead talk to Shank to continue setting up Outposts and get the last 5 (If you want you can continue the main quest and then finish the 5 remaining Outposts afterwords).
If you never moved Shank to an Outpost when you go back to Nuka World talk to him you will be thrown into a fight with the
when the nearby enemies are dead you can talk to Shank to find out whats happening and will continue the main quest, But you can still talk to him to get the last 5 Outposts without having to do the main quest right away.

Once you've set up the 8th Outpost the achievement should pop right away,

I don't understand why you would do this. If you talk to Shank and send him to an Outpost and all of that... you can still setup more outposts. What is the difference in setting up the last 5 from Nuka-World or from an outpost?

The only difference between setting up the last 5 outposts from Nuka-World or from an outpost would be the number of loading screens you had to go through. Other than that there is no real difference between the two.

is there any way to do this without Preston hating you? I talked the first camp into it and immediately he knew and hated me.

To reiterate on what those above said, basically by following the guide and not sending shank to the Commonwealth tacks on about 45 minutes of loading times. Sooo, DON'T follow that particular part of the guide and send shank immediately to the Commonwealth, otherwise you're having to fast travel back and forth between nuka world and the Commonwealth over and over. You should fix your guide dude.

i have pissed off Preston. It sucks, but i have a save an hour before where he didn't like me but didn't hate me. Is it possible to go back, unlock some more settlements and try that?

Figured it out. If Preston hates you, complete any active minutemen quests anyway, and when it says report back to Preston go to Sanctuary hills, workshop menu, and move him to another settlement. Talk to him, and he'll say he can't forgive you, talk to him again and for me I could still report in and finish it off.

To be able to do this do you need to finish off a bunch of side quests first?

I keep getting told that I either can't take over a settlement because it has no one of interest at it or that there is a quest related NPC here.

Currently on 5/8 so going to be a very annoying last 3 I think.

I kept being asked if I wanted to take over my own allies settlement and I agree everytime because I had them all under control. So I assume you should be able to take over unaligned settlements. If you're on 5/8 already I dont think it needs other side quests, just asking the guy to create another run.

How possible would this be without touching settlements much and not even meeting Preston?

You can’t do this without doing settlements. The Achievement requires you to take over settlements.

You can actually do an entire playthrough without ever meeting Preston however.

I just finished establishing the last outpost and the achievement didn't pop up, got the tribute chest unlocked etc does this achievement glitch?

A quick note, If your achievement annoyingly glitches out like mine did and will not pop no matter how many settlements you capture, heres how i fixed it. Go back to an older save before you started doing capture missions for shank and start again, the slog was my starting point so i'll use it as my example. complete missions for shank and make a note of which settlement you gained for supplying the slog. Send shank to the slog and carry on doing takeover missions (ignore powerplay mission). Make sure one of the settlements you take over is the 'supply' settlement for the slog you gained earlier. Once you capture 8 it should pop.

This part of your solution doesn't make any sense to me...

"Keep in mind that if you moved Shank to an Outpost and complete the quest you are prompted to return to Nuka World for the next main quest, Don't, instead talk to Shank to continue setting up Outposts and get the last 5 (If you want you can continue the main quest and then finish the 5 remaining Outposts afterwords)."

You said not to do the main quest like it's better to get them all out of the way, then in parentheses basically say "nevermind, you can do the main quest". I was hoping to finish the main Nuka World quest line after setting up the initial 3 raider outposts. I wanted to do it that way so I could set up the other 5 after the Powerplant is restored, and then reload a save so I don't screw up my supply lines.

Even though I'm done with the achievements (except for a few from Nuka World) I still enjoy building settlements from time to time, and the outposts break my supply lines in a brutal way.

If you complete
Fallout 4Power PlayThe Power Play achievement in Fallout 4 worth 66 pointsComplete "Power Play"
you'll unlock an outpost/settlement in Nuka-World (Red Rocket, NE of the Nuka bottling plant). For me this counted as 1 of the 8 outposts.

If after this achievement you then complete "Open Season" or kill the raider gang leaders, you'll be able to revert the outposts to settlements.

I'm doing this from a save made immediately after exiting the vault at the start of the game, it may not work for you otherwise. There will definitely be shortcuts but I'm not risking any as this is my last achievement.

Make use of the Fallout 4 wiki site(s) for how to progress through missions, etc.

The console opens using the ' key. It is on the number row for US layout, it's the @ key on my layout.

In the console, prepare yourself for the journey ahead:
tgm
tmm 1
player.additem 000FE268
player.additem 000e6b2e 500
player.additem 000BD56F 1

You may also want to give yourself a high level and raise some perks to make things easier:
player.setlevel 99

We're going to start the DLC and try to rush through to complete the achievement requirements.
coc DLC04TransitCenterExt

Kill any hostiles and proceed into the transit centre.

Proceed through the missions All Aboard, Taken for a Ride, An Ambitious Plan and The Grand Tour. Make use of nuclear weapons and:
tcl - noclip mode
kah - kill all hostiles
...to make things go faster.

For Star Control, use the following command to provide yourself with all the cores needed:
player.placeatme 0601f0e5 35

I was able to advance through some of the Grand Tour missions using console commands, the important thing was to end it properly by talking to Shank to start the mission "Home Sweet Home".

Home Sweet Home is where this achievement really starts. Work through the mission, when possible order Shank to go to an outpost in the commonwealth so you can travel to him more quickly. When it ends ignore the next one (Power Play) and go to Shank to continue launching missions to establish new outposts.

You'll get a progress pop-up after each one, as completing the requirements match up to unlocking a tribute chest in-game.

Thank you for the guide +1 Just a couple things;

- I skipped straight to 'Home Sweet Home' like @Redticle suggests (setstage DLC04MQ03 655).

- Also I tried to send Shank to an outpost but he kept walking back so I just kept teleporting him to me instead (xx01e30a.moveto player) - replace the xx with your DLC (06 for all).

- Certain outposts had mission-specific characters which prevented me claiming the outpost. For example 'Warwick Homestead' which I had to click on the whole warwick family and type in 'Disable'. This essentially deletes them so make sure you make a save beforehand in case.

- You can get to previous commands by clicking the up arrow (this may be obvious to most).

^ This will automatically put you at the start of the "Home Sweet Home" quest, so there is no need to run through the entire DLC just to attempt this achievement. The only caveat is that if you used commands to skip certain quests that are part of the Nuka World storyline, such as "The Grand Tour", this command will likely not work. However, loading up an earlier save (right after leaving the vault for example) is a great way to save time as the command should work with no issues.

During the "Home Sweet Home" quest, you will work alongside a Raider named Shank in taking over your settlements in the Commonwealth and establishing Raider Camps in their place. This can be done in one of two ways: violently (attacking your settlers) or peacefully (coercing them into leaving through two speech checks).

You will automatically establish three Raider Camps during this story quest. After turning the quest in to Shank, you can then speak with him (he'll remain at the front entrance of the park) any time after and select the "claim new territory" dialogue option. He will ask which settlement you want to overtake, check to see if it's available (essential NPCs cannot be in a settlement you want to overtake), how you'd like to go about taking the land, and which Raider Gang you want to assign to the settlement.

All you have to do is establish five additional Raider Camps in the Commonwealth and this achievement will unlock.

During the quest "Home Sweet Home" you will be introduced to the mechanics of Raider Camps. This consists of the following steps:

1. Talk to Shank and select the option "I want to run a job", followed by selecting "Claim new gang outpost" and assigning a Raider faction.
2. Select an outpost, Shank will let you know if it's eligible.
3. Pick your way of conquering: talking or killing. I personally found that talking was the quickest as I had high Charm and could pass the speech-checks.
4. Once conquered, plant a flag of the assigned faction using the Workshop.

Repeat the above steps until you have 8 Raider Camps in the Commonwealth.

See the following video below for a visual walkthrough (credit to TheAdventuresofanEthan's Channel for this):

When you begin to capture settlements in the wasteland, you need to select the type of operation “capture a new outpost”; if you negotiate about supplies, you will not be given a trophy; the outpost is indicated by a skull icon with a chain around it. Those settlements that pay tribute are indicated by a man in a circle of chains. To get the trophy, you must have eight skulls on the wasteland map.

The opportunity to capture settlements will appear after the story mission “Home Sweet Home”, capture three settlements according to the plot, the rest after the mission, you can even capture your own settlements, if you have pumped up charisma, then the easiest way is to convince the settlers to leave on good terms and that’s it.
