How to unlock the Tradecraft achievement in Fallout 4 - Definitive Guide

To Join the Railroad, you first have to start the quest "Road to Freedom" which can be done by listening to random people in Diamond City. Some will talk about Railroad rumors and the quest will pop up.

FOLLOWING THE LANTERNS
The next step brings you to "Boston Common". You have to follow the Lanterns that lead you to the Old North Church. The lanterns can be pretty tricky to find but if you play at night and follow the guide, you should have no problem.

BASEMENT PUZZLE
At the Old North Church, walk down into the basement, kill all the enemies and walk to the end where you find a puzzle on the wall. To open the hidden door, you have to spell out "RAILROAD" letter by letter. The Button in the middle is used to activate the letter that the red arrow is pointing to.

Once inside, agree to go on the next mission "Tradecraft" and find Carrington's Prototype. You can now return to the Church again and join the Railroad.

Lanterns? I didn't follow lanterns to find the church (I actually know where it is IRL because I've been there). I started in Boston Commons after killing The Swan, followed the red brick trail, stopped at each plaque along the way, and getting the "puzzle" codes from each to spell out RAILROAD.

Im on the mission Tradecraft and for some reason the Terminal next to the Giant safe looking door where the prototype is behind says [INACCESSIBLE] is this for everyone?

Not sure if it matters, but when I chose a name other than Fixer, the achievement didn't pop. I reloaded it and chose Fixer and it worked.

Game also glitched for me, I had went up the elevator before entering the room with the safe, once back downstairs the guy came into the room with me I pressed "A" to talk and he mentioned something and just vanished leaving me with the "Inaccessible" terminal. I had to reload a previous save and thankfully it worked! Just a heads up.

If you are glitched with “terminal inaccessible “ save on a new slot and load it . Seems to work for most people !

For this achievement you have to join the Railroad faction. Here are all steps:

1 - listening in Diamond City random people which talk about the railroad rumors to start the quest
2 - go to the quest marker from the quest (Park Street Station)
3 - follow the lanterns or the red line to solve the puzzle but both is not necessary, you can directly go to the Old North Church
4 - go inside the Old North Church but watch out some enemies are here
5 - go to the basement and enter the password "railroad" to open the hidden door
6 - talk with the woman and with Deacon, start the next quest called "Tradecraft"
7 - complete the quest (ca 30 minutes) and at the end you will come back to the room
8 - talk with Deacon and the woman again and use the "Join the Railroad" option
PS: During the mainstory quest "The Molecular Level" you can also solve the "Road to Freedom" quest. The main quest have the same steps (2-5)

To join, you need to pick up the quest "Road to Freedom" - this is added from overheard information in Diamond City (if you have already been there, try just wandering the market slowly during the day)

You'll start "Road to Freedom" in Boston Commons (it'll be marked on your map). When you get to the monument, look down at your feet - there is a trigger on the ground. Now, follow the red brick path picking up each trigger point as you go until you finally come to the "Old North Church".

Note: you wander past at least one large Super Mutant camp on the way, it contains at least 1 suicide bomber, perhaps more.

Note 2: The path is broken in places. You may have to wander a bit to pick it back up. Also, the path does double back on itself after the second marker (runs down both sides of the street - I got lost here for a while and used one of the other sites videos)

When you get to the church, proceed into the main room, hand a right, and go through the door below the white railroad symbol (it's a bright white starburst). You will hit a puzzle switch - you need to spell out "RAILROAD" by spinning the letter disk and hitting the button for each letter.

At the end of the path, the leaders of the railroad will give you a task - complete it, come back, and you can join for the achievement.

MISSABLE! - Completing the quest for the Institute called "The End of the Line", will make The Railroad hostile and prevent you from completing their quests for good. ACCEPTING the quest for The Brotherhood of Steel called "Tactical Thinking" will also make The Railroad hostile! The game tells you this though before you do those actions.

Faction: The Railroad
Quest Giver: Deacon
Location: Railroad HQ

You need to first complete the road to Freedom quest to be able to join the Railroad. This quest is given to you if you overhear conversations in Diamond City about the Railroad or see the Freedom Trail. The easiest way to get it is just through the main storyline via the story quest "The Molecular Level" which has you following the Freedom Trail.

You have to follow the lamps, which eventually lead to the Old North Church. For help finding its location, please refer to the following video. Complete this quest then talk to Deacon, he'll tell you about some help he needs an give you the quest "Tradecraft". Complete this and you can join the Railroad.

There is a monument in the Boston Common location with a red line running from it. It will lead to the Old North Church. There in the basement you will need to enter the password RAILROAD

Actually, the hint tells you how to find the Underground, and not complete the quest Undercover Work.
The quest itself will be given after the GG meets with Underground agents under the church. With Deacon (who is a very positive and, one might say, laughing person, or not a person ), you will need to walk along the overpass, then go down to the collector and pick up one part. Don't forget to pick up the magazine at the collector. After all the work, we meet near the church.
By the way, with the start of interaction with the Underground, a Code Word item will now appear in conversations with some characters
