How to unlock the Never Go It Alone achievement in Fallout 4 - Definitive Guide

For this achievement you need to recruit 5 DIFFERENT companions from across the Boston Wasteland. Simply recruit the character then dismiss them and move on to the next one. I apologise in advance that I do not have a video to show you each companion's location, but I'm sure you can find them by yourselves! :)

There are 13 companions that you can team up with:

Cait - Location: Combat Zone
Codsworth - Location: Sanctuary
Curie - Location: Vault 81
Paladin Danse - Location: Cambridge Police Station
Dogmeat - Location: Red Rocket Truck Stop
Deacon - Location: Old North Church
Hancock - Location: Goodneighbour
Maccready - Location: The Third Rail (Goodneighbour)
Piper - Location: Diamond City
Preston Garvey - Location: Museum of Freedom, then moves to Sanctuary
Strong - Location: Trinity Tower
Nick Valentine - Location: Vault 114, then moves to Diamond City after quest
X6-88 - Location: The Institute

Many have quests attached to them that you must complete before they are available to become a companion, which can be a pain if you want to recruit them quickly. Therefore, by far the easiest ones to recruit are:

Codsworth, Dogmeat, Preston Garvey, then Piper and Nick Valentine (once you get to Diamond City). However, it is completely up to you.

Good luck!

I have 7 companions and haven't got this achievement do they need to travel with me?

You need to actually talk to them and ask them to travel with you. It's not enough for the game to tell you they're available to be a companion.

You might wanna add that Preston Garvey can glitch on you and he will not be able to become a companion. I've done like 20 quests for him already and it won't let me speak to him.

Ah man that's shit, how did that happen for you? What stuff have you done for him after the Museum of Freedom?

thanks for the concise guide - no need to apologize for not having a video - some people, like me, will only only use those things as an extreme last resort. too many are such a waste of time to watch

I have not gotten the option for Preston to join me. I am in the minutemen now but it never gives me the option to turn him into a companion.

I did aabout 10 Minutemn quests then I did all their other quests aswell. But when I speak to Preston, he'll still give me quests but it won't let me have a conversation with him. Like, when I press A to talk, no options come on screen to talk to him. He just says some generic line like "Go kill the ghouls in x". Pretty annoying, but atleast there are other companions to get.

With the addition of the Automatron DLC, all robot companions that you build and then get to follow you will count towards this achievement. After completing the first mission of Automatron you will have the ability to build a robot workbench at any settlement. As long as you have the materials you can build the basic automatron model. By the time you get to the starting point of this DLC you should have the materials to build multiple robots.

Also, during the first mission of Automatron you have the chance to recruit the pre-built robot Ada.

I only ever used Dogmeat, Paladin Danse and Ada as companions. The achievement unlocked for me after building and recruiting my second robot.

When exploring the harsh Wastelands of Post-Apocalyptic Boston you will encounter several characters that are recruitable as a companion.

You can find them all across the Wasteland but here are 5 Companions and the given locations where they can be found.

Dog : Can be found in the beginning of the game at Red Rocket Station - he will be your first companion you encounter.

Preston Garvey : Can be found in Concord at the Museum of Freedom - this companion is story related so it cannot be missed.

Mayor Hancock : Can be found in Goodneighbor upon first entrance to the town.

MacCready : Can be found in the Third Rail Bar in Goodneighbor.

Cate : Can be found in The Combat Zone, a Raider bar located in the Boston Commons - this is located to the right of Diamond City on your Pip-Boy.

I hope this guide is of some use to new players.

UPDATE: YOU NEED THE DLC. If you're boosting through the console commands and want all the achievements, then you should have purchased the DLC.

You can get this as soon as you get out of Vault 111, when you make your way to Sanctuary.

Press "~" to open up the CC window and type in "coc qasmoke". In here, grab all the materials in the boxes and build a bunch of robot companions over at the robot workshop station. If you need more materials/resources, I'll provide a list of codes for said resources:

Acid – 001BF72D
Adhesive – 001BF72E
Aluminum – 0006907A
Antiseptic – 001BF72F
Asbestos – 000AEC5C

Just type "player.additem [Base ID] [Quantity]" and go to town. Also, make sure to talk to each robot you build to add them as a companion and send them back to Sanctuary. After the fifth one, you should unlock the achievement.

Any questions and/or concerns, leave a friendly comment. Also to the petty downvoters; Go f#$k yourselves. That is all.

In total, there are 13 companions in the Commonwealth that you can recruit during your playthrough. None of them are missable as recruitable NPCs cannot die. For this achievement, you only need to recruit 5 different companions; you don't have to do their special companion quest. A full list of companions can be found HERE. Breaking it down with character and location:

  • Cait - Combat Zone
  • Codsworth - Sanctuary Hills
  • Curie - Vault 81
  • Danse - Camridge Police Station
  • Dogmeat - Red Rocket Gas Station
  • Deacon - Old North Church
  • Hancock - Goodneighbor
  • MacCready - Goodneighbor
  • Valentine - Vault 114
  • Piper - Diamond City
  • Preston Garvey - Museum of Freedom and then Sanctuary
  • Strong - Trinity Tower
  • X6-88 - The Institute

There are a total of 13 different Companions in the core game so there are way more than what the trophy asks. Unlike the previous Fallout games, Companions cannot die so they will stay until with you until they're dismissed. If they take too much damage however, they will go into a downed state. In this state they cannot attack for about a minute or until you give them a Stimpack. Here is a list of all the companions in the game, where to find them and if they involve a faction. Ones that have the faction name next to them are missable if you make that faction hostile but there's still more than 5 even if every faction hates you.

Below is my tactic. I leave the plot for later.
If you decide to take your relationship with everyone to bed... oh, no... to the maximum That:
1. Start with Codsworth, then Preston Garvey, Piper, McCready, Kate (by then you should have found the Vault she needs), Hancock, Power Man, and then everyone else.
2. All the rest then because for them you need to complete story quests.
3. Drink more with Kate, Strongman doesn’t like it when you pick locks (yes, prepare for his friendship by taking the cannibalism perk. He respects this)
