How to unlock the Prepared for the Future achievement in Fallout 4 - Definitive Guide

This achievement is obtained by reaching one of the four faction endings for the main questline of the game for the first time.

I made a chart that shows how to obtain all the achievements with only one save / reload, and also the best point to save in order to obtain all 4 endings (not necessary for achievements).

Scroll down for a more detailed explanation (inside the Spoiler Tag, as it is an awful lot of text).

For starters, keep in mind a thing: having high charisma will help you when you'll have to balance several factions at once. I recommend having at least 6-7 points of charisma, and using "charisma-enhancer" gear like Glasses, Hats or Suits, or even using, when neccessary, beer or some drugs as Grape Mentats or Day Tripper that give charisma points for a few minutes.

Open this thing for the full explanation:

Hope it helps!

So just to be clear, where you mention an Optimal Save for the Railroad ending, there isn't an achievement tied to that at all? So I can skip over that little section if I'm not interested in seeing it?

Thanks for this, definitely the easiest guide I've seen this far!

^ clearly meant Optional, and not optimal. That's my bad haha

There's only one mission for The Railroad after that save. It has an achievement tied to it, The Nuclear Option, but you can also unlock it with the Brotherhood or Minutemen. If you follow my guide you'll unlock it with the Brotherhood. So it's a matter of preference. As you said, skip it if you're not interested in seeing that ending.

Will this achievement pop at the same time as Nuclear Family / Nuclear Option? Trying to maximise achievements in a streak

@oX xM1K3x Xo, yes, this achievement will unlock the first time you complete the game, along as one of those two.

This is not working for me. I've completed all quests up to but excluding "From Within" for The Brotherhood. "From Within" will not show up for me. I successfully completed "Show No Mercy" as well. I followed the chart exactly. Any ideas?

@UraMallas, go to the Prydwen and talk to Maxson. That should work if the quest doesn't appear automatically.

Looking at it, I do not need to make a second save on the Brotherhood/Minutemen branch if I don't care to watch the Minutemen ending, correct?

Correct. I marked on the guide where to make an optional save in order to obtain all the endings, but that isn't required for any achievement. So, if you aren't interested in that ending, there's no need to make another save.

When you are making your key saves, make a neon sign that says "mass fusion save" or whatnot and save standing in front of it so it'll be easy to find later.

It may be dependent on which missions you've completed for each faction, but in my case, completing Blind Betrayal hasn't kept me from progressing with the Railroad. It could be that the decisions you make during Blind Betrayal determines where you stand with the Railroad afterward. For example, I completed the mission diplomatically (ie without killing anyone) and instead of advancing any further in the Tactical Thinking mission, I went on to really start advancing further in the Railroad and Insitute storyline like by completing Synth Retention and starting Underground Undercover.
It should also be noted that I chose to build the transportation device to enter the Institute with the Minute Men. I felt that was a more neutral solution then siding with one of the other factions. I also never actually had to agree to join The Institute. I told father I would think about it and he said "Okay" kept giving me missions anyway. I did however agree to join the Botherhood and because I built the device with the Minutemen, I had to tell Desdemona I would side with The Railroad over the Minutemen before Underground Undercover would start.

Way to go on the flowchart. Thank you so much! Made this nightmarish "multiple playthrough" business a walk in the park. My only complaint is that Bethesda made four different endings to a story that wasn't all that interesting. I only hope they make a game where achievements are more general to the overall game and not so specific to mundane quest lines. Just my personal opinion, no offense meant to fans of the story. Thanks again for a great guide.

Powering up didn't unlock for me. So I went to check it and it says "Done unlocking" so this will probs unlock in 1 yrs time.

Edit - This unlocked for me on 2/7/16 so it only took 1 week. I only knew it unlocked because Trueachievements congratulated me on my completion.

This is earned after completing one of the major questlines in the game.

PLEASE NOTE!! The major questlines cannot all be earned in one playthrough, so make sure that, if you want to be efficient, you make plenty of save files before you reach a point of no return so that you don't have to restart the game to go down a different path.

Probably the best place to save your playthrough will be at this point:

Farther along, there is another branch that can help you finish all of the quest achievements for two separate factions, depending on which faction you choose:

I don't understand. I have started both the Minutemen and The Brotherhood quest lines. Why won't I be able to do all of this in one play-through?

Eventually they'll conflict and you'll have to choose one.

According to the guide, it's after Hunter/Hunted. I think you can go up to when you leave Virgil because then you only have one place to go after that, but I saved before I started that mission just in case.

You have to choose one, right? ..... i have to do all the three companions?

You definitely have to choose, but there are ways to combine various factions into one run. There's no way to avoid backtracking and taking another path, though.

TicKLe ME TiGHT got these three achievements, in this order on 2nd Dec 15:
Fallout 4Ad VictoriamThe Ad Victoriam achievement in Fallout 4 worth 67 pointsComplete "Ad Victoriam"
Fallout 4The Nuclear OptionThe The Nuclear Option achievement in Fallout 4 worth 57 pointsComplete "The Nuclear Option"
Fallout 4Prepared for the FutureThe Prepared for the Future achievement in Fallout 4 worth 86 pointsDecide the Fate of the Commonwealth
So either there was delay in it popping, or they hadn't finished "A New Dawn".

This is the end game achievement. You will be awarded this after you choose the path for "Nuclear Family" or "The Nuclear Option".

Story related and cannot be missed.

To get this you simply need to complete the game and get either the Nuclear Family or Nuclear Option endings.
