How to unlock the Sanctuary achievement in Fallout 4 - Definitive Guide

You receive this quest after meeting Preston Garvey back in Sanctuary Hills (your home town).

He will ask you to talk to Sturges to assist the new settlers.

You have to complete the following tasks by using the Workshop Menu (Hold cn_back while within the green boundary of the settlement), you can salvage from around the settlement to build all these items:

1. Build 5 beds - Furniture menu - Each bed requires 4x steel, 5x cloth. Place the beds within a house, I fitted them all in the main house by removing the old furniture and kitchen.

2. Provide 6 clean water - Resources menu - Build two water pumps in dirt (at the back of the house is an ideal place). Each water pump requires 1x concrete, 4x steel and 1x gear.

3. Provide 5 food - Resources menu - Plant vegetables in dirt (these can be any that you have collected). Each crop will provide 0.5 of food. At the back of the house there are some crops already planted, if you harvest them you can plant more i.e one gourd = 0.5 crops) keep harvesting and planting until you have 5 food production.

4. Build 6 Defense - Defense menu - You need to build three guard towers (anywhere within the green boundary) For this each tower will need 12x wood and 6x steel.

Once you have crops and defenses, you will need to assign one person to defense and one to crops. To do this, while in the Workshop menu, click on any person to command them, then click on the crop or defense to assign them.

You can do these all in one go or speak to Sturges in between each one.

Once all are complete the achievement will pop.

Think there is a problem with achievements with this game at the moment. Scaver or Valentine achievements haven't unlocked for me

For me the guard towers were not working because I did not assign people to them. So I reloaded and build a turret, got the achievement with it. To get the required cicuitry I took the phone from the red rocket nearby.

Mine just switched from Done Unlocking to unlocked with a proper timestamp. The achievement alert is also gone from the Xbox support page. Might just be a matter of time now.

This wasn't popping for me either. I just reloaded an old game and went back through the steps to complete it and it popped up.

First off, guard posts don't count as defense until someone is manning them. I'm having similar trouble with the achievement popping.

Condescending as it sounds, are you sure the achievement didn't pop? Once I was on preview for the new dashboard, achievement notifications frequently got swallowed. Two in Fallout have already disappeared even though I have the achievement.

Past that, there's no real advice if a technical issue in-game is stopping achievements. Unless there's a status update of achievements having problems through Xbox, the only suggestion is to make a save before completing it and try again later.

Excellent guide. This worked like a charm. I went through and did all of the actions you described, but the achievement did not pop at first. I then read through your guide again, and I realized that I had done all of the actions, EXCEPT actually talk with Sturges. I then went and talked with Sturges, and he started his dialogue about helping with everything you described. As we got through each piece of his dialogue, where he described that individual thing that needed to be done, I had already done it, so I instantly got credit for doing what he asked. As soon as we got through all of the individual dialogues, the achievement popped.

The achievement is tied to talking with Sturges and performing the actions, so if you just do the actions without talking with Sturges, then the achievement won't pop, but at that point it only takes about two minutes to go talk with Sturges, to finish up the achievement. :)

Quest Giver: Sturges
Location: Sanctuary

During this quest Sturges will simply request you to build up different aspects of your first settlement essentially giving you a tutorial on what is needed and how to go about beefing up and prospering with a settlement. After you build the defenses for the settlement, return to Sturges to complete the quest.

This is one of the first quests you get in the game and is given to you by Sturges in Sanctuary. It tasks you with the following steps to complete it.

  1. Build sheltered beds for Sanctuary settlers
  2. Talk to Sturges
  3. Provide clean water for Sanctuary settlers
  4. Talk to Sturges
  5. Provide food for Sanctuary settlers
  6. Talk to Sturges
  7. Build defenses for Sanctuary settlers
  8. Talk to Sturges

It's an easy side quest for the Minutemen and you do not need to do it to advanced in the Minutemen questline. You do need to do it for the trophy and it'll add +1 to the side quest counter for the 10 side quests trophy.

It is necessary to meet and help Preston Garvey (who is located in the city of Concord, in the Liberty Museum). After clearing Concord of opponents, he will offer to go to Sanctuary. We agree and go there. After the group arrives at the settlement, it is necessary to complete 3 tasks from Sturges to arrange the place.
