I think I had a freak accident for this one. After I killed the raiders and talked to that settlement I went back to Sanctuary and was talking with Preston and during our conversation he just fell over and I haven't been able to find him. Anyone else experiencing this? I'm so confused. Probably won't be able to unlock this since I assume the conversation we were having he was going to ask me to join up.

I haven't experienced the above but if you build a bell and ring it he might appear since it makes all the people in a settlement come to the bell.

Yeah, I eventually just went to bed and tried finding him when I woke up, we started the same speech tree all over again like nothing happened. Weird/funny glitch I guess.

This achievement must be glitched for me. Are you supposed to get it after completing the 'The First Step' quest? Because I completed the quest, talked to Preston, and gained him as a follower but the achievement didn't unlock.

Same here MAST3R SHAKE04, completed the quest and been through all the dialogue to "join the Minutemen" and get Preston as a follower multiple times now... No achievement.

Yep, I just suffered this exact same problem. Reloaded, didn't work, hard reset and reload and still no go.

To those having a problem with this achievement please read my solution. It worked for me, hopefully it will work for others as well.

This solution is ONLY for those who join the minutemen and complete the quest, but the achievement does not unlock. Not sure it will work for everyone but this worked for me so I wanted to share it.

Basically I finished "the first step mission" and did not get the achievement. All my answers to Preston were basically the "nicer" answers. Tried reloading with no luck. I was annoyed so I reloaded again and was basically a dick to him. I wish I remembered my exact answers but I told him maybe it would be better off without the minutemen and then something else and when it got to him saying yes or no, I said yes and immediately achievement pops. If you can save before you turn in to him you can try different dialogue options to findicate the right one. Hope this helps someone.

I gave this method a shot, but unfortunately it didn't work for me. I tried 5 different times using different dialogue choices; and one time I slept for a couple hours first before talking to Preston. None of them worked, but I did get a couple different dialogues by choosing different combinations of responses so I may just have to keep trying.

For now I saved the game right before talking to Preston, and I memorized its time slot so I'll probably continue the game and come back to it later.

I'll update if I ever get it to work, thanks though!

-UPDATE-

I just read that Xbox was having problems with achievements earlier, so that might've been the entire problem. The achievement still hasn't popped for me, but now at least it says 'Done, unlocking..'

No matter how rude I am to the guy, the achievement still doesn't pop. Tried a range of combinations and nothing. Pretty annoying.

Edit/Update to the above - I snapped my achievements in and out while playing and it randomly unlocked from completing the requirements earlier on... so definitely a strange and glitchy achievement this one.

Quest Giver: Preston
Location: Sanctuary

You simply need to talk to Preston after returning with him to Sanctuary. He wants you to lead the MinuteMen into the new era. When you accept this role you will unlock Preston as a companion, the Minutemen questline, and this achievement.

Faction: Minutemen
Quest Giver: Preston Garvey
Location: Concord/Museum of Freedom

You will have the option to join the Minutemen very early in the game. When you are in Concord, you'll come across the Museum of Freedom and get the quest called "When Freedom Calls". Enter the Museum and kill all the raiders, now talk to Preston Garvey then go to the roof and get in the Power Armour that's up there. Fend off the enemies then head to Sanctuary with the Minutemen, where you will then get the option to join them. You can do this without fear of other trophies becoming locked out as you can work with all the factions at once.

The very first faction you encounter on your way to join the Minutemen, your character must meet and help Preston Garvey (who is located in the city of Concord, in the Liberty Museum). After clearing Concord of Raiders and Deathclaws, he will give you a recruit mission ( the tasks are different, depending on the circumstances) after completing it, Garvey will offer to join the Minutemen.
