How to unlock the Trapper achievement in Fallout 4 - Definitive Guide
If you don't want to spend materials, save your game before you build them and reload the save after unlocking the achievement.
In your chosen settlement, hold to bring up the build menu and scroll to the right for the CAGES category. Unlike most other structures, each cage requires different food/chem items or caps as "bait".
NOTE:
- Save before building! If the achievement doesn't pop reload your save and build the cages in a different settlement (thanks XHALORIONX).
- Most of the resources & baits can be bought in Diamond City (thanks Becky070).
- The cages must all be built on the same save, to be safe make sure you have all the resources and build them in one go (thanks Metroidkillah).
- The cages may not have to be powered (thanks Thickly Settled).

1. Not all of the cages are available to build in Far Harbor. Specifically, you cannot build the Gunner, Raider, Gorilla, or Dog cages in a Far Harbor Settlement.
2. The Gorilla cage is only available if you destroyed the Institute AND evacuated the Institute in "The Nuclear Option". (Because the Synthetic Gorillas would have been released and evacuated into the Commonwealth). However, if you do not meet those conditions, the Gorilla cage is not needed for the achievement. I sided with the Institute and could not build the Gorilla cage, yet shortly after building my last other cage the achievement popped.
Hope this info is helpful. Let me know if you can verify the Gorilla cage under different circumstances (Destroyed Institute but didn't evacuate, etc.)
In the Workshop menu of any settlement, you will now find a "Cages" category on the far right. There are multiple variants of cages you can build: Small (4), Medium (5), and Large (6). As with any settlement item, you will need a decent amount of crafting materials in order to build all 15 cages.
Mostly every cage requires Copper, Gears, and Steel (please see below), although each will also require a unique animal/creature meat or other miscellaneous item to construct. So long as you have the room in your settlement to build each cage, you should start tracking down all the materials you need.
If you're in desperate need for some of the animal meat needed for the cages, you can always visit Choice Chops (Polly the Butcher) in Diamond City Market. She will have some of animal meats you'll need, specifically those for Brahmin, Mole Rat, Mongrel Dog, Radroach, Radstag, and Stingwing (and Mirelurk Eggs, too...though her inventory changes every visit). Just buy the items you need, wait two days on the nearby wooden bench, then visit her again, repeatedly, until you have your meats. For the rest of the items, you'll need to do some open world hunting!
Check out THIS POST for a quick summary on where to find some basic building materials such as copper, gears, and nuclear material. Additionally, refer below for a shorthand checklist of the "unique" items you'll need for each cage.
Small Cages
- Cat Cage - Softshell Mirelurk Meat x2
- Dog Cage - Canned Dog Food x3
- Mole Rat Cage - Radroach Meat x4

Medium Cages

- Radstag Cage - Carrot x4
- Yao Guai Cage - Radstag Meat x4
Although Polly's inventory will reset after waiting for 48 hours, she doesn't carry a large supply of the meats/items you'll need...so it will take a while to gather everything. She also doesn't sell certain items. For those supplies she doesn't carry, please see below for additional notes on where they can be found in the Commonwealth.
Softshell Mirelurk Meat
- Looted off Softshell and Hunter Mirelurks along the coastline of Salem (NE on the map)
Canned Dog Food
- Six cans can be found on the highway southeast of Jamaica Plain, which also hosts the armored dog named Alissa
- Three cans can be found in Proctor Quinlan's quarters on The Prydwen (on a bookshelf)
Razorgrain
- There is a medium-size razorgrain field behind University Point's main building (SE on the map)
Yao Guai Meat
- Four dead Yao Guai can be found in a ravine/ditch due north of Coastal Cottage (NE on the map)
GLITCHED
Note: The Gorilla Cage is not required for this trophy so don't waste time and effort on either, unlocking it in the first place by finishing the Nuclear Option quest in the main game or building one if you already have it unlocked.
There are a total of 15 cages which you need to build but fortunately, you may not need to power them on for the trophy to pop. As mentioned in the Road Map, it is suggested that you attempt this in a large, spacious settlement once you have collected all of the necessary supplies. Once you have all the supplies backup your save before attempting to build any of them. Now build the cages one by one and when you have finished building the 15th the trophy should pop, however mine took a few seconds to do so, and I had to quit in and out of the workshop menu a few times.
The Cages you need to build are:
Small cages:-
Cat (Materials needed: x6 Steel, x1 Copper and x2 Softshell Mirelurk Meat)
Dog (Materials needed: x6 Steel, x3 Canned Dog Food and x1 Copper)
Mole rat (Materials needed: x6 Steel, x4 Radroach Meat and x1 Copper)
Mutant hound (Materials needed: x6 Steel, x2 Brahmin Meat and x1 Copper)
Medium cages:-
Feral ghoul (Materials needed: x10 Steel, x4 Mongrel Dog Meat and x2 Copper) - A lootable dead Mongrel Dog containing 2 Mongrel Dog Meat, frequently spawns on the road between Sanctuary and the Red Rocket Truck Stop.
Gunner (Materials needed: x10 Steel, x500 Bottlecaps and x2 Copper)
Insect (Materials needed: x10 Steel, x2 Copper and x4 Mole Rat Meat)
Raider (Materials needed: x10 Steel, x6 Jet and x2 Copper)
Super Mutant (Materials needed: x10 Steel, x5 Brahmin Meat and x2 Copper)
Large cages:-
Brahmin (Materials needed: x16 Steel, x4 Razorgrain, x4 Copper and x4 Gear)
Deathclaw (Materials needed: x16 Steel, x4 Yao Guai Meat, x4 Copper and x4 Gear)
Mirelurk (Materials needed: x16 Steel, x4 Mirelurk Egg, x4 Copper and x4 Gear)
Radscorpion (Materials needed: x16 Steel, x4 Sting Wing Meat, x4 Gear and x4 Copper)
Radstag (Materials needed: x16 Steel, x4 Carrot, x4 Copper and x4 Gear)
Yao guai (Materials needed: x16 Steel, x4 Rad Stag Meat, x4 Copper and x4 Gear
All of the above items can be easily obtained in the Diamond City Market by trading with the Diamond City Surplus and Choice Chops stores but if they don't have in stock what you want, wait/sleep for 24-48hrs then come back - rinse and repeat until you have everything. Now if you have Far Harbor DLC installed, then you can get a ready supply of Yao Guai and Radstag Meat from there since the island is crawling with both creatures. If you have trouble finding enough Gear, then try the Corvega assembly plant as several can be found there.
Glitch note: This trophy can be very glitchy so if you are having issues getting it to pop, then double check that none of the 15 cages require repairs (which happens if they have been used before or been attacked) then power each of them with a small generator and attach a wire. Though the trophy doesn't require the cages to be powered, installing the generators may give the game a poke into popping the trophy. If this doesn't work, then load a pre-glitch save and rebuild each cage and that should give the trophy a big enough nudge to make it pop.
For example, the 16th middle cell is not indicated, the place for a wild mutafruit is indicated, but 4 bushes were enough for me, etc.
There are 16 types of cells in total: 4 small, 6 medium and 6 large . And you need to build each of them. First of all, stock up on materials: steel, copper, gears. You will need quite a lot of them. Again, you can buy various rubbish from a gunsmith in Diamond City, which will contain these materials.
Small cells:
- Mutant Hound Cage - 2 Brahmin Meats
- Cat cage - 2 soft-shelled Swamp meat
- Cage for Mole Rat - 2 Radroach meat
- Dog Cage - 2 Canned Dogs
- Gorilla cage – 5 wild mutafruit
- Wild Ghoul Cage - 4 Dog Meat
- Insect Cage - 4 Meat Mole Rat
- Raider Cage - 6 Screws
- Shooter Cage - 500 Caps
- Super Mutant Cage - 5 Brahmin Meat
- Cage for Swampman - 4 Swampman eggs
- Brahmin cage - 4 Razorweed
- Deathclaw Cage - 4 Yao-Gai Meat
- Rad Deer Cage - 4 Carrots
- Radscorpion cage - 4 Stingwing meat
- Cage for Yao-Gai - 4 Rad-Stag meat
Nobody will sell you all the items in large quantities. 1-2 in 3 days. However, it’s worth sleeping for 3 full days and the stores will again be replenished with the desired items.
Wild Mutafruit is much closer than previously written, or rather not far from Sanctuary in the forest. And not 4 bushes, as in the Wilson Atomatoys area, but 6 or more. Location:
Soft-shelled Swamp meat is not available in stores; you will have to look for it yourself. It is best to do this in the Fort area, not far from the sea. There are a lot of nests with swamp eggs and you can easily find the desired items) Well, or for owners of the Far Harbor DLC - you can try your luck there.
1) From the entrance to the house, turn your head to the right, after which you will see an old, rusty billboard. Approach it.
2) Determine where north is and go a little to the left. After 15 seconds of walking you will see 4 stingwings by the rock
