How to unlock the The Boss achievement in Fallout: New Vegas - Definitive Guide

If you find the need to get this achievement immediately, Here's how you go about doing it. It will take about a half an hour, which is still relatively quick, plus if you follow the commentary, it'll tell you how to achieve 28 perks. (But that's off topic.)

In the beginning of the game, make sure you have at least a speech of 25. Get to the point where you meet the powder ganger, Joe Cobb, who wants you to kill a guy called Ringo. Tell him you'll do it. Go to the house where he is located (It will be shown on your compass if the quest is selected), and kill him, ONLY after getting the caravan set from him. (You can only do this through conversation) Once done, tell the powder gangers you'll help them take over town and go looking for supplies. Once you tell him this, kill the powder gangers. Now go into the supply shop and tell Chet, the owner, over and over that he should donate to the powder gangers. You will be able to use this speech process over and over. he will continue giving you leather armor and 9mm ammunition, (which i find very useful at least to sell to someone like the gun runners for 8000 caps later on.) as well as a lot of experience over and over. It'll take about 30 minutes if you keep at it to get to level 30.

Make sure your first two perks are swift learner. It will make the process must faster.

Also, if you don't care about the 28 perks and cheating, it won't matter what you pick, because once you leave town, you have the choice to completely rebuild your character, so those swift learner perks you chose at first, can be replaced with something useful.

not trying to be ms police or dr killjoy etc but wouldnt above glitch be breaking ms rules re earning cheevs out of order glitching to get cheevs etc. would be nice to have 28 perks but nicer to keep my gamerscore. i am actually asking here as i dont glitch games for cheevs but this method is for perks does that count to ms as cheating account ban etc?

It does work in half an hour, but it depends on the difficulty level. He put the game on Very Hard in the part where you talk to Chet so he got lots more of exp. The higher the difficulty, the more exp you get and vice versa. It also increases the exp given to the player by killing mobs, passing speech challenges, hacking terminals, picking locks and completing quests. Hope this helps people to understand the method :)

Just a small note. I didn't find Cobb in the store after shooting the sarsaparilla bottles. I did find him in the spot where you meet him outside. If you're following the video and do not see him in the saloon, just go directly to where you meet up with him in the video.

This still works as of 22nd July 2018, using the Ultimate Edition on Xbox One. I'd say it took me somewhere between 1 and 2 hours to get to level 30, I did it in parts to make it less of a grind.

Awesome guide! Still works as of 17 Dec 2021. I did run into a minor issue so steps:
1. Do tutorial quest.
2. After "saloon confrontation" go find Cobb.
3. Talk to Cobb and be sure to assist taking over town. He will say kill Ringo.
4. Go to Ringo, get caravan deck (play/win 3 times for quick achievement if desired.)
5. Kill ringo, return to cobb tell him, assist with taking over town dialogue again.
6. Kill Cobb and his lackey's.
7. Now go do the glitch.
I had killed ringo first, told cobb. Wanted to assist in taking over the town. Killed the gangers and it wouldn't let me go get the supplies from shop keeper. I'm thinking doing it out of order messed it up.

Still works April 23, 2024 on game pass with Series S. No need to try and delete cache or anything like that. I actually interrupted Trudy and Cobb arguing to talk to Cobb, went directly to Ringo, got caravan deck, killed Ringo, talked to Cobb, killed gang, and then went to Chet and it still worked fine!

The glitch still works as of 11 Feb 2013 ... however it did take a lot longer than half an hour. I put it on very hard before I talked to Chet and it still took around two hours or more.

I would also like to add that you should follow the video provided as an example. I did not follow it to the letter ... instead of seeking out Joe Cobb and beginning the Ringo deal after shooting bottles with Sunny, I followed her on her fetch quests. Upon completion I guess I strayed a little too far away from the town (no warning) and it gave me the option to redistribute my points/perks or keep them. There was no abort option ... and when I had finally gotten all 30 levels I ran to the point where it had asked me about redistribution and the option never popped up. Now I am stuck with shitty perks and will have to start over from scratch.

Things like to add is that having it on easy hard or etc. DOES NOT give you more XP. I can personaly verify this. Also proof here
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Swift_Learner
It does help to have the "Swift Learner" perk caped to level 3 soon as you can. I was getting +33exp per speech/barter succession. Also would recommend using the "Here and Now" perk after level 20. It doesn't really speed it up but it gives slight edge. I don't know how those who claimed to have gotten to level 30 in 30 mins with this trick. I was button mashing pretty fast and took me 2-2.5hrs. Fastest way I found was to follow the video so both barter/speech are options. Just keep hitting down as you see success and double tap A button. You'll find a rhythm to get it pretty quick but I'm still not sure how the claims of 30mins are truthful. Also if your going to do more after getting level 30 like I did. I found that the Pipboy lagged a little bit since your gaining Powder Gang fame, Leather Armor and 9mm ammo slower then getting the XP. Might wanna let that play out but that took a while after I dinged 30. Best of luck! toast

No it isn't against the rules if there is an in game glitch, the glitching method for getting full gamerscore in each game is different and Microsoft can track that kinda thing, this is different.

The reason things like this USUALLY exist is because it gives the game designers a chance to be able to play out and test the game, without having to take all the time it takes to level up and actually play the game. In Fallout 3 there was a speech glitch with a women at Big Town (its been along time since I've played the name of that town might not be exactly right) or for another example Dragon Age 2 has a glitch that you can make it all the way up to level 50, if you play the game all the way through you will not get that far above level 20.

So, basically, doing something like this is all your own choice. If you don't mind getting to level 30 right at the start of the game and get the advantage of all the perks (particularly helpful if you're trying to get the Hardcore achievement) than by all means go to town. Some people, however, have some sort of moral alignment against that kinda thing. I personally do these kind of glitches and exploitations after I have actually played the game through about 1-2 times before I tear into the mass leveling up.

If you don't want to glitch, this can be done pretty easily through normal means.

Early on, take the perk (as many times as you can) that gives you +10% experience. From there, do all the other achievements you can that don't conflict with each other, and that should put you VERY close to level 30. Finishing one of the storyline quests should then put you over the edge. I'm currently at ~28.5 after finishing all but 2 of the non-storyline quests.

Yeah, the perk you're referring to (Swift Learner) is an absolute winner. You can take it up to 3 times, with each level granting you a cumulative +10% boost to earned XP (so, you can max it at +30%).

Also the Well Rested status effect (granted by sleeping in any bed you own, and lasts for 12 hours) will give you a further +10% XP.

Challenges can also provide some useful boosts (look them up in your Pip-Boy, through Data -> Misc -> Challenges).

I just took the Swift Learner Perk twice, and just now I reached Level 30. I'm doing the NCR quest line and I'm halfway through it all. It really isn't that hard at all! All you do is just do side quests and explore a little bit, but mostly side quests!

And do not forget about the Here and Now perk which grants you one free level. You only need to get to level 29 and take this perk and you are instantly at 30, it saves you the 1 level.

DON'T use swift learner if you are going to play this game through you do not need it to get to L30. You only get 15 perks on the way to level 30 please don't waste 1, 2 or 3?!? of them on this perk. it's an absolutely stupid idea!!

You need a few things for this to work.
1. speech 40 or above
2. accepcted by the NCR

Go to camp golf (near lake las vegas) and speak Sergeant McCredie in his communications tent, and start the "Flags of our foul ups" side mission by offering to help whip his team into shape. After mission has started* EDIT* talk to Ohanrahan(tall guy, red hair),ask about squadmates and agree niceness is the best way to help, then go speak with Razz, short guy says "holmes" and has a mohawk. Ask him about his team and then you get a speech challenge,40+, win the challenge and keep doing speech challenge over and over. you get xp every time you win. keep tapping A so you are constantly challengening and getting XP. If you stop getting xp, tell razz goodbye, apply stat points and perks for all the levels you went up. Go to Razz and start the speeech challenge again. Keep goin til you hit lvl 30.

If an update patches this, you will have to go to your memory in system settings from your xbox dashboard and clear cache and do this method off line. once you hit lvl 30 you can play online and download updates. I started this at lvl 9 so as long as your speech is high enough and NCR does not hate you, you can get this pretty early in the game.

MSG me if I left anything out and I will edit solution.

*note: this will also get you Orater achievement. ( 50 speech challenges)

If you don't mind using a glitch to get it here's one I came across.

First clear your cache and play offline because It has been patched.

Go to HELIOS 1 (you will need a 30 speech to get in, or an NCR uniform), start That Lucky Old Sun quest by talking to Ignacio down there. When you're diverting power, choose the 5th option.

Finish the quest by talking to Ignacio tell him you done, You get 450 ish xp, 3 stimpacks and 2 doctors bags and you'll be able to repeatedly tell him your done until you get to level 30.

Best way to get NCR Armor without Karma loss or the NCR hating you is to get them from the Nipton Hotel which is west of the Nipton Hall.

Just clearing your cache for this doesn't work anymore, you have to go into Fallout: New Vegas on your harddrive and delete the Title Update #5 Manually for it to work, when you load up the game just Cancel the Update, another pop up will appear if you have played with the Title Update #5 Prior to deleting it telling you you are missing some downloadable content, don't worry about that just click yes to continue loading as it's referring to the Title Update, other than that, everything else works the same, thanks.

If you are short on a few levels and nearing the end of the story instead of glitching do the honorable thing and go to The Thorn and just continuously fight the toughest creature you can handle and about 150xp should be rolling in ever 1-2 minutes depending on how quick you are.

The Thorn is also a EXCELLENT place to start working on weapon achievements or letting the animals kick the shit out of you to work on stimpaks and food achievements (drowning yourself is a tad bit easier tho).

Really easy to get. A few days ago i found a weird glitch in the quest where you need to kill Big Sal at Gomorra's Casino. First off i shot off his leg. And after that while i completed the quest. I just started punching the amputated leg out of boredom. I received 400+ exp with each punch. It only took me 10 minutes to reach level 30. I don't know if it just happens in my game. But you can at least give it a shot.

Currently I'm using this method.
In Bitter Springs, the area with a lot of tents and "refugees".
There's a 2 "tin" wall section (there's a remains of a third wall)
Inside is a straw matress with a sleeping female refugee, and an empty normal matress. on the local map the room is surrounded by two "huts" and one other similar shaped metal fenced area.

This sleeping refugee can be "mister sandman murdered" unlimited times, save regular because I sometimes get thrown into the wasteland near centaur and I'm unable to get back. It took me 8 minutes to get from level 24 to level 25.

edit: I just noticed, there's a salesman weekly on her matress, to help identify the refugee.

She never seems to wake up without being hit or talked to.
The salesman weekly is by her knee.
She has empty inventory when pickpocketed.
There is NO bad karma, or good karma gained or lost in this method.
You do not need to be [HIDDEN], this will not cause hostile enemies.

Lv10 is reached when your character earns 7,200 XP, Lv20 at 29,450 XP and Lv30 at 66,700 XP. These trophies will come naturally over the course of the game but if you’re in a hurry, you could always invest a couple ranks into the Swift Learner perk which will improve the XP you earn by 10% per rank to a maximum of 30% extra XP. You can also use this exploit (credit to Jocomat9 for this):

Follow this video exactly as shown and make sure you start the game with 25 speech, otherwise it will not work. NOTE: If you go to Chet in the store instead of the doctor (at the same point in time) you will receive the same experience, plus unlimited Ammo that can be sold for infinite caps.

If you start a fresh file and do this tactic and get to max rank without leaving Goodsprings, getting Swift Learner will help you get to max rank quicker. When you finally leave Goodsprings, the game will ask you one last time to change anything of your character (stats, phyiscal features etc.) you can change and get rid of Swift Learner and make any character you want. Just save when you reach max rank.

Getting to level 30 is more a test of patience than anything difficult. Unlike Fallout 3, FO:NV does not fully scale monsters in the wastes to your level. So for example, the area around Goodsprings will always have Geckos and not much else. This means that you are going to either want to farm an easy yet relatively high experience enemy (such as Fiends) or do many quests. I suggest doing quests, as once you have explored the majority of the map many can be completed in 15 minutes or less and yield a hefty experience reward. Do not forget the Here and Now Perk, which automatically levels you if you take it; save it for later levels when it takes more experience to level.

There are multiple places within the game where you can power level-up. Some of these glitches may have been patched, but can still be done your system's cache is cleared. Play offline, and it should work perfectly. Check out That Lucky Old Sun for the superior method.

Endless Experience:

In the Still in the Dark quest for the Brotherhood of Steel, McNamara will ask you to repair the air filtration system, for which you will need to find 3 spare parts in different shelters. In shelter 11 on the lower level, in addition to the necessary part, you can find the password for the warden’s computer. To do this, you need to swim through the flooded corridor - the password is on the podium in the conference room or on the computer on the floor above. Returning to the warden’s room, we open the entrance to the sacrifice room through his computer, where we watch a short video and take out turrets and robots (it is advisable to have electric grenades). Behind them is a terminal with 2 entries that fully explain what happened in Volta. Clicking on the bottom entry downloads it to the pipboy and gives 650 experience, and you can click as many times as you like - the experience will continue to accrue. IMPORTANT: if you exit the terminal, you will no longer be able to repeat the experience boost.

After the patch, the glitch with infinite experience is invalid! But don't worry, because... You can easily get level 30 by opening 125 locations, completing additional quests and getting kills with different weapons.

There is a very interesting bug with getting negligent infinite OO.
To do this you need any companion and find the corpse of the praying mantis.
We select the praying mantis paws from the corpse, open the companion’s inventory and drag the paws to the companion and back to yourself, each time you drag you will be credited with 20 XP for one paw.
This bug has not been fixed and works in the Ultimate Edition (tested personally).

When you have completed the first training, the girl will tell you “Please look into our [salon] BAR.” Let's go to the salon. There we see Joe Cobb [demolitionist] and Trudy [bartender]. They are arguing. You must talk to Joe Cobb. He will tell you like “Let’s go out into the street! All sorts of people are eavesdropping here.” We run after him along the road and when he hits the wall, you need to talk to him. And say “should you capture this city.” He will ask “What to take from this poor town.” If it’s good With your eloquence skill, you will kill him to take over this city. After which he will tell you to kill Ringo. We go to the gas station and kill Ringo. After which we return to Joe Cobb. You tell him that Ringo is dead and he will ask you to shake out the sellers of the goods. That's it!!!! .We kill Joe Cobb and his guys. And we go to Chet’s store. There will be a line like [Give me some goods for the demolitions]. He will say [Twenty-five again]. If you have good eloquence or bartering skills [25] you can tell him like [ This is your chance to join the winners of One. Two. Three.] He will say ok ok and give you Potions, Armor and XP. The line will never go away!!! The main thing is Kill Joe Cobb!!! This way you can level up to level 50 and get the trophy

There is a glitch in the game that gives XP up to level 30.
Briefly speaking! We go to Vault 11, there, walking around the shelter, we need to find the key to the caretaker’s office. Next, we go to the office and open the tunnel through the terminal, and go, go, go... we find ourselves in a room with a chair and a projector. A mysterious voice says that you need to sit down and then the presentation will begin. I recommend getting up from your chair and walking away and waiting for about 3 minutes. Then, towards the end, you need to turn on Stealth Battle, and when the walls open, robots come out, and you need to go into the room that is to your right. There is a terminal there, activate the terminal and constantly click on the very bottom line... click, click, click until it stops giving out XP. Then, we quickly run to the office and look for a passage to another location, and after appearing, levels will be immediately given, up to 30...

Well, good luck, comrades! 8)
