How to unlock the The Legend of the Star achievement in Fallout: New Vegas - Definitive Guide

This quest is started at the Sunset Sarsaparilla Headquarters, which is located on the map just south of the Monte Carlo Suites in west Vegas, and just west of the NCR Sharecropper farms. When you get there enter the factory floor through the door with the giant soda bottle over it. On your local map you can see that this door stands alone while there are two other doors right behind each other. Head inside and walk a little bit forward and then Festus will be on the left. Please not that Festus is a MACHINE not a ROBOT like the others in the factory. Ask him about star caps to get the quest. Now the objective is to find 50 starred Sunset Sarsaparilla bottle caps.

Here's a list of all the cap locations - http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/The_Legend_of_the_Star

Once you have 50 starred caps in your inventory head back to Festus and talk to him. It will then say you failed the quest, but give you a new quest called "A Valuable Lesson" follow the marker and get your reward for finding the caps, which will complete the quest and give you your achievement.

If you have any questions ask in a comment. :-)

You should mention that festus is not a
robot, he is a machine. When I entered I didn't even see him because I was looking for a robot like the ones you find in the factory.

good solution, just like to suggest that you add a detail. The achievement pops after completing "A Valuable Lesson", which is a short quest given after completing "The Legend of the Star".

I got the majority of my star caps by drinking Sunset Sarsaparilla, they make for great health and count as food.

Actually splicegraph they don't count as food, they do however give great health, and a 10 percent chance to give a star cap when you drink one.

Actually, I believe I did mention it. Maybe not in the clearest way possible but.. "It will then say you failed the quest, but give you a new quest called "A Valuable Lesson" follow the marker and get your reward for finding the caps, which will complete the quest and give you your achievement."

Make sure you get this before you pass the point of no return, I got them mainly from shacks and drinking a sh*tload of Sarsaparilla, even hotkeyed the bottles near the end.

FYI, I don't think this works anymore. Found the guy (with a bottle cap) fast traveled away, waited 3 days in that location, fast traveled back. The guy is there, but no longer has a bottle cap.

Worked just fine for me. Thanks for the link to the cap locations. I already had about 30 from normal game play, so when I focused on this one it wasn't as bad.

Question, I accidentally gave festus my star caps before having fifty and he told me I didn't have enough. Do I need to get fifty more or will the caps I gave him still count towards my total???

He won't take them if you have less than 50, iirc. Check your inventory under the Misc section. It should show you how many you have.

This quest can be completed without any contact with Malcolm Holmes at all. Just go to the Sunset Sarsaparilla HQ.

The dude at Scorpion Gulch doesn't respawn after 72 hours.. But i remenber killing the guy before and after a long time ingame i came back to utilize that trick and he was there.. I went to Novac, waited 72 h and came back to Scorpion Gulch and he was still lying dead in the same place..don't know if they patched this or something. I may have to wait longer or quit the game and start it again

to add to whats already been posted. , after you turn in the caps to the cowboy robot kiosk festus. it says legend of the star quest failed, then it gives you another quest. just go up stair find the room at the far back of the building pick the lock and you'll see a whole in the floor, thats the only way into the treasure vault. all other ways are blocked. you have to pick up the hola tape next to the body in the back left corner. You can get about 1400 caps searching the crates in the vault. then climb back out of the vault the way you entered.

This achievement is really time consuming as you probably know by now. There are 100 star caps floating around in predetermined spots, but usually there's no more than 1 star cap in any given location. While you will certainly find some this way, even with a guide finding the required 50 is a grind. However there are 3 extra ways to get some extra star caps and make this achievement much easier.

There are 6 star caps on Malcolm Holmes; the man who tells you about the challange. So after randomly encountering him, trail him, kill him discretely and take them. Then while traveling around the wastes a predetermined random encounter will have you be approached by a women named Jackyin, who will ask you to help her kill a deranged friend who will be nearby. Don't do this, instead help the man kill her. She will have 2 star caps on her. Then the guy will say she was after his neclace which he made of strange caps. Tell him it's dangerous to wear them and you'll take it off his hands, that's 7 more easy star caps, so you're now up to 15. The rest you have to find using a guide, but I would also like to point out that every time you drink sunset sarsperella, there's a 5% chance you'll get a star cap. This is slighty higher with a good luck rating. So whenever you find one of the bottles of it, drink it there and then, and hope for a star cap. getting star-caps this way easily earned me another 10 by the time I was almost done with the game, and I had found another 10 that were scattered throughtout the game. By the time I actively started working towards the 50 star caps, I only had 9 more to go so I recommend you hold off til late in the game to try the grinding methods, until then, work on the other achievements, and by the time you're done with most of those, this one will be cake.

Malcolm Holmes the NPC you are refering to approaches the Courier after they have collected their first Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle cap. You can actually just kill him outright and take his caps as there is no karma loss for killing him. The only person who has ever retaliated to me attacking him is Sunny Smiles so a sneak attack is still a good idea.

The woman who approaches you is called Jackyln and she only approaches male couriers, female couriers will instead be approached by Tomas.

The base chance to find a star cap when drinking Sunset Sarsaparilla is actually 5%.

If you are playing on Hardcore the glitch of the recurring man with the blue star cap mentioned above can become very costly because of food, water and sleep. Instead if you go to the Sunset Saparilla Headquarters building and pick 'Feeling Lucky?' from Festus you start a mini game kind of like 21 but a little quirky. Each time you win there is approximately a 6% chance of getting a star cap. All I did was mash (A) and about half the time I won. It'll seem slower to do it this way because waiting 72 hours does not take that long but in Hardcore it would get to be very expensive.

ONLY USE THIS SOLUTION IF YOU HAVE A TURBO CONTROLLER
----------------------------
Let me first start by saying "Luck" may have a factor in how often you win a Star Cap so keep that in mind.

If you go inside of the Sunset Sarsaparilla Headquarters and immediately turn left you can start the first quest in this achievement "The Legend of the Star". If you play a game with Festus and win you can sometimes win a Star Cap. So you could just turbo the "A" button while playing the game with him and increase your Star Cap count when not by your Xbox. After you have 50 Star Caps talk to Festus and "The Legend of the Star" will fail and you must complete "A Valuable Lesson" to get the achievement which is given to you by Festus as well. All you must the do is go pick up the Holotape that was behind the sealed door and the achievement will unlock.

A quick walkthrough on how to finish "A Valuable Lesson" taken from the fallout wiki:
"The final destination is marked inside the factory. To get there, follow these instructions:
Starting from Festus, head through the north door and carry on across the hall to the room with the hole in the roof.
Walk up the wreckage to the 2nd floor.
Take your first left and then right. You should see a very long corridor.
Walk straight to the end of that corridor and you should then be in the room with the hole in the floor.
You'll know you're in the correct room, as it has a wall safe at the back, and a 'Broken Personal Assistant'.
The hole then leads to the prize room"

Location of the Sunset Sarsaparilla HQ:
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Sunset_Sarsaparilla_Headquarte...

I personally did not do this but I do own a Horipad EX 2 turbo controller (which I bought for Seriously 2.0) and I recommend it or if you are in the UK you could probably buy a Datel Wildfire 2. Just check Amazon.

*I know I might get Downvotes but please keep in mind this is only a solution for people that want to get the Star Caps and have a Turbo controller and don't mind doing this. It doesn't mean you have to down vote because of you think this is a shameful solution.*

The star caps can usually be found in the small outdoor locations scattered across the Mojave. The clue is that they are often lying next to the empty bottles of Sunset Sarsparilla. For a more exact guide, the Fallout wiki, The Vault, has exact locactions. http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Sunset_Sarsaparilla_star_bottl...

I think they may have patched the Scorpion Gulch method as whenever I tried it there was no Wastelander there no matter how long I waited.

I have however found a surefire way to get the Star Caps, I heard it mentioned on another site (Can't remember which one) and I can confirm that it works, simply stock up on Sunset Sarsaparillas and save it, when you drink them you get about a 10% chance that the Bottle Cap that comes off of it is going to be a Star Cap, if it is them immediately save it and keep going, if not just reload your previous save and try again. In the space of about 10 minutes I'd gotten 12 Star Caps out of 12 Sunset Sarsaparillas.

Hope this helps!

This achievement is a little misleading. You can gain The Legend of the Star quest when you head into the Sunset Sarsparilla Headquarters. Inside, you'll find Fetus. Fetus is a robot-greeter, who gives the player information on Sunset Sarsparilla, and the rare, Star Bottle Caps. When you find 50 of these bottle caps, you can return and claim your prize. After you've done so, the mission will fail. However, afterward, another mission will pop up, where you claim your prize. Head to its location inside the Headquarters, and the achievement will unlock.

Check here for locations of all Star Bottle Caps.

This mission is a side quest received at the Sunset Sarsaparilla Headquarters when you talk to Festus, the robotic cowboy mascot in the lobby but don't shut him down, else you will void the quest and miss out on the trophy.

You need to collect 50 Sunset Sarsaparilla Star Bottle Caps to complete this quest. There are 100 in the game that are in set locations, as well as a 10% chance of getting a star cap randomly when you open a bottle of Sunset Sarsaparilla. Finally there are random encounters with collectors which could yield additional caps. A collector named Malcolm Holmes may approach you to discuss the caps, who you can pickpocket or kill for his collection. You may also randomly interrupt a fight in the wasteland between Tomas and Jacklyn who have a number of caps between them. Once you have 50 caps, return to Festus for your "reward".

Don't panic when the quest "fails". Talk to Festus again to get your real prize and you'll get another quest called "A Valuable Lesson". Complete this second quest by going to the prize closet and picking up the holotape, and you'll get the trophy. Make sure to pick up the unique weapon Pew Pew while you're here!

For those who don't want to run around the map and collect caps with stars, there is an exploit with endless caps. In the Scorpion gulch zone (East of the Bratsva bunker), there is a corpse with 1 cap on the carcass. We select a lid, go to any area with a bed and sleep for 72 hours, return and see that there is again 1 lid with a star on the carcass. Sometimes the corpse comes to life and wanders around the area. In this case, just shoot the poor guy, it doesn’t affect karma in any way. Repeat until the required amount =) I advise you to combine getting the trophy withNew Vegas Samurai , Old-Tyme Brawler , Hardcore and Desert Survivalist . You will most likely get these trophies by swinging on scorpions in Thorn. We convert scorpion tonsils into pies from Ruby and get hundreds of pounds of food. I advise you to sleep in the shelter of the Followers of the Apocalypse, because there is a fountain with clean water and from the doctor once a week you can get a pack of anti-radiation drugs for free, which is very useful because pies in large quantities give off radiation.

Unfortunately, this bug was fixed in one of the patches. To use it, you need to delete the game file (Manage game data->Fallout:New Vegas (size 4+GB)). When starting the game, we refuse to download the patch, load the save and go ahead. After passing, you can install the patch. And yes, you don’t have to sleep at all, you can just wait (Select button). But you have to wait outside the Scorpion Gulch territory; I waited in Novak.

In the Sunset Sasparilla Headquarters building, to the left of the main entrance there is a machine with a doll named Festus. You can take this quest from him.

You probably met a wanderer at the very beginning of the game who warned you about a crazy cap collector. This is exactly what needs to be done. We find 50 caps with a star from "Sunset Sasparilla". There are tons of caps, lying around almost everywhere where there are simple caps and a bottle of Sunset Sasparilla. In general, the task is not difficult, just look around and under your feet.

We give away 50 caps, listen to an interesting story, and suddenly realize that we have been deceived. The quest failed, but that's how it should be. We beg Festus for a normal reward. We get the next quest. Then he says that we need to go to the previously closed room, supposedly there the robot will give us a trophy.

We go into the room (you need to go up to the second floor, then go down into the hole in the floor, next to the safe), we find a bunch of badges there, there are 150-250 caps in the Sunset Sasparilla boxes. There is a corpse in the corner, next to the Pew-Pew laser pistol. We take the note next to the corpse, the quest is completed, the trophy is yours.
