How to unlock the Lead Dealer achievement in Fallout: New Vegas - Definitive Guide

As stated above you will get this through normal game play as long as you use guns. Also if you have companions with you it will hinder the damage count some. For every HP of damage they do that is less towards your damage. Which I think is a fair trade off since you get the XP for everything they kill.

Update:
Thank You Undead Immortal for pointing this out!
You can keep track of this by going into your PipBoy under Data - Misc - Then press Y to bring up the Challenges press X once to go to next Challenge type then Scroll down and find Lead Dealer.

Note: I have obtained this achievement on another account. It was compromised so I had to switch to another.

This achievement is obtained by using any gun that uses bullets. It is most likely going to unlock on its own in typical gameplay, unless you specifically start your character as a melee or energy based character.

edit:Also, you can view your progress with the pip boy, under Data, Misc, then press Y to switch to challenges, then hit X to switch to Damage Challenges.
Thanks Undead Immortal for the tip!

This one is perhaps the most straightforward of the group. Simply take a gun that uses bullets and shoot enemies. For best results, you'll want to fight against lightly armored opponents like Raiders, Fiends, and Great Khans. Also remember that unless you want to wait for the Weapon Handling (Level 16, Strength under 10) perk you'll need a Strength of at least 3, though up to 5-8 if you want versatility in weapon choices.

This trophy will come naturally over time as you make use of firearms in the game. Playing on Very Easy difficulty you will do 200% normal damage to enemies, making it much easier to accumulate points. The damage you do in the game will be directly affected by your Perception stat and your Guns skill. If you haven’t received this trophy by level 16, consider taking the Improved Criticals perk which improves critical hit damage by an additional 50%. You can keep track of your progress by looking at the "Lead Dealer" challenge in your Pip-Boy. Damage inflicted by your companions does not count towards this trophy.

Small-arms weapons are weapons that use regular ammunition (pistols, machine guns, shotguns, anything that doesn’t shoot a laser and doesn’t go “BOOM”!), using such weapons cause a total of 10,000 damage.
