How to unlock the Mod Machine achievement in Fallout: New Vegas - Definitive Guide

WHAT MODS ARE:
Weapon mods can be found at various vendors throughout the Wasteland, but the best place to go is "Gun Runners" near the New Vegas Strip. They usually have a lot of gun mods in their inventory under "Misc". You will need to have the gun you buy the mod for in order to install it. Note: Every vendors' inventory recycles over time, so there are more than enough opportunities to collect weapon mods. If, however, you want to get this done as fast as possible, there is a way to "force" a vendor to change to new mods. See the bottom of this solution for directions.

Here is the location of Gun Runners (JPEG):

HOW TO INSTALL:
To install a mod, go to the Weapons section of your Pip Boy and scroll to the weapon you bought the mod for. Click the LB (Left Bumper) and a list will open up of available mods for that weapon. Just click A on the mod you want and the next time you take out your gun you will notice your shiny, new addition. These mods do not need to each be unique for the achievement. You can use duplicates of the same mods or on the same weapon.

HOW TO FORCE NEW MODS:
Vendors' inventory changes every 72 hours or so, so press the Back button and wait for ~3 days and then check with the vendor again for new mods. You can also try the following:

Does it have to be 20 unique mods or 20 mods in general?

If I acquire two of the same mod for the same gun and apply it to two different guns do they count?

I honestly have no idea. I just wanted to share what I found at the time and I'm adding more to the solution when I learn more about it. I had a hard time finding a good spot to buy weapon mods so when I found one I wanted to make sure everyone else could find it a lot easier than I did.

Thank you for that contribution 'cradle crue'. I will work that into the solution with your gamertag as credit if that's ok with you.

@HMTKSteve
It only has to be 20 mods in general, I had two 9mm Pistol's with extended mags attached.

The GRA DLC makes this a whole lot easier. There are far more weapons with mods added to the game when using this DLC, some of which are far more readily available and far cheaper than those in the base game.

As some of the people above have mentioned, Gun Runners is the best spot, in my opinion, to get this done in a matter of minutes.

Instead of spending tons of caps and maybe not getting the achievement to pop, just go to Gun Runners and buy the Varmint Rifle then purchase the Varmint Rifle Silencer. It's a total of 261 caps so just mod that then wait 3 24-hour periods. Rinse and repeat until the achievement pops.

Although this obviously takes considerably longer, but, the amount of caps you save this way is phenomenal, good job :)

also you could do the war club. It's cheaper and there is 2 at a time. But nice tip.

You can buy/find mods everywhere and if you got two 9MM pistols, you can buy two scopes and place them on each weapon. This counts for 2 mods.
In total you can place 3 different mods on 1 weapon (ex. Varmit Rifle with Night Scope, Silencer and Extended Mags).

Locations for mods:

Great Khan Armorer, entrance of the Red Rock Canyon, sells mods for Guns.
Blake, Crimson Caravan Company (north of Freeside), sells mods for Energy W. and Guns.
Vendortron, Gun Runners, sells mods for Energy W., Explosives ad Guns.
Gloria Van Graff, Silver Rush in Freeside, sells mods for Energy W.
Dale Barton, The Fort of the Legion, sells mods for Energy W. and Guns.
Chet, Goodsprings, sells mods for Guns.
Michelle, 188 Trading Post (on your way from Boulder City to Vegas), sells mods for Guns.
Knight Torre, Hidden Valley (Brotherhood of Steel), sells mods for Explosives and Guns.
Old Lady Gibson, Gibson Scrap Yard (north of Novac), sells mods for Energy W.
Cliff Briscoe, Novac Dino Shop, sells mods for Energy W. and Guns.

Later on in the game (after you went to Vegas and did some main quests for either NCR, House, Legion or Yes Man), he sells some 9MM scopes and drums for the 9MM SMG. Personally I bought a Night Scope and Extended Mags for the Varmit Rifle.

Ok this is how I got the achievement. I saved up about 15 thousand caps or so. Then I fast traveled to the Gun Runners near Free Side. Then once you are there SAVE YOUR GAME this way if you don't have enough caps you can just reload the save and get more caps. Or if you got the achievement you can reload the save and keep you money. Then you go to the MISC tab in the barter menu and hunt for MODs for the guns. If you have the guns for the mods buy them. After this while remembering the gun mods in MISC go to the Weapons menu and buy the guns. Then go back and start with the cheapest mod you can find and so forth.

To install the mod highlight the gun and press the LB button. If there are not enough mods in the inventory go to a different location and wait a few days.

I just went to Vendortron @ the Gun Runners and bought from him. When I started buying it's caps would be at exactly 8000 and when I was done they were more than 8000. Once I got any weapons and Mods, I would hit the Back button and wait for three or four consecutive 24 hour cycles. Then I would go to buy from it again. If Vendortron shows it has exactly 8000 caps again then you have waited long enough and it should also have some new weapons and mods for you to buy. Rinse and repeat until this unlocks.

I found travelling to the various vendors listed in the above post wasn't netting me anything more than wasted time, even with waiting for several 24hr cycles.

Each weapon can hold up to three weapon mods, which can be purchased or found in your travels. In your Pip-Boy 3000, on the weapons screen hit to bring up a list of available mods. Each mod is unique to a particular type of weapon, so you need to make sure that you have the right mod for the gun you're using. You'll get the trophy after installing 20 weapon mods, over any number of weapons. The vendors who sell mods are:

  • 188 Trading Post - Alexander

  • Crimson Caravan Company - Blake

  • Gibson Scrap Yard - Old Lady Gibson

  • Gun Runners - Vendortron

  • Goodsprings - Chet

  • Hidden Valley - Knight Torres

  • Novac - Cliff Briscoe

  • Red Rock Canyon - Great Khan Armorer

  • Silver Rush - Gloria Van Graff

  • The Fort - Dale Barton

Mods can be acquired from many traders in the waste, and then can be added to weapons via your Pip-Boy. Each gun can hold up to three mods. You can do this over time, but MUST be done in one playthrough. You can complete this immediately after completing The Courier Who Broke the Bank as then you'll be swimming in money. The Gun Runners have a good supply of mods to buy if you're searching.

One weapon can be equipped with up to 3 different modifiers, which can be purchased from sellers or simply found somewhere. To modify a weapon, you need to select it in the corresponding menu of your Pip-Boy and press to go to the list of modifiers available for installation in this weapon.

Here is a list of merchants who sell modifiers and the names of locations where you should look for these characters:

  • 188 Trading Post - Alexander
  • Crimson Caravan Company - Blake
  • Gibson Scrap Yard - Old Lady Gibson
  • Gun Runners - Vendortron
  • Goodsprings - Chet
  • Hidden Valley - Knight Torres
  • Novac - Cliff Briscoe
  • Red Rock Canyon - Great Khan Armorer
  • Silver Rush - Gloria Van Graff
  • The Fort - Dale Barton
PS Obtaining this trophy requires a significant number of caps, since you won’t find many modifiers lying around anywhere, and most of them will still have to be purchased from merchants. If you have enough funds, you can immediately buy the weapon itself from sellers, install the mod on the spot, and, if you no longer need it by itself, immediately sell it back, thereby returning some of the spent caps.

If you don't have enough "covers", use the video hint. A very simple way to earn 7000 caps) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX1OF0UKWNE

You won't get this trophy right away, but that doesn't make it difficult to achieve. Buy, collect all the weapons. Don’t throw it away or sell it, but put it in your stash. Buy all possible modifications from sellers. They have no weight, so you don't have to worry about your hero not being able to carry the load. Then come to your stash and mod. Since sellers often have repeated modifications, do not throw away duplicate weapons, but modify them too.
