How to unlock the At a Rate of Knots achievement in FAR: Changing Tides - Definitive Guide

Hi !

For this achievement you need to complete the game under 210 minutes (3h30).
The achievement pop just before the 10 minutes credits.
I did it in 2h53 so you have a good margin.
Don't be afraid,it's easy to do if it's your 2nd run :)

According to the comments, the pause menu freeze the timer.

But if you want to be sure to unlock this achievement, quit the game if you need a long break.

Here's my full walkthrough (in 2 parts) if you need a visual guide:

I'm still here to help if you need more infos smile
Have a good day !

Not sure sorry. But I did it in 2 sessions, so you can quit the game, take a break, then relaunch the game.
There's plenty of checkpoints in the game (56) so it's better to quit after reaching a checkpoint, just to be sure.

Without watching the videos. Do you stop to get the extra fuel at the buoys? Or is it possible to do this mostly depending on wind power?

I grabbed 60-75% of the items i could get underwater and on the islands. And 2 or 3 containers if i remember correctly.
I barely used the boost (it use too much fuel for the distance traveled) but i used the wind each time it's possible.Very useful.

It took me 3 hrs 15 mins, and I didn't take my time. It was nice not having to worry about that stoopid flower. Haha!

Great game!

Took me little under 3 hours. It is very well doable, even with a bit of dilly-dallying.

The pause works just fine but I always immediately went to "Home" Xbox Dashboard just to be on the safe side.

I used wind power when available and always the steam engine on 2/3 speed - I feel like your fuel burns much faster on 3/3 and the added speed is not noticeable. Used the speed boost only few times after acquiring it as I had a lot of spare fuel.

I picked only fuel that was on the way and easy to pickup and few crates at the buoys but they tend to be very random as some of the contain loads of fuel and some contain just one.

The game is wonderful but this achievment is poorly designed as the game doesn't even let you keep the time in-game and relies on you to track it externally (I used my phone).

I didn't get the achievement. I don't have time to play 3h30 straight but I made sure to pause to the menu every time I took a break.

This was my second playthrough. I boosted every chance I could. Not sure what went wrong.

@Bryson - I can’t say because I haven’t played the game yet but if I had to guess it’s from pausing. The timer probably doesn’t stop when it’s paused.

Maybe not when it's paused, but Clad said you can quit out and relaunch and stop the timer like that.

Yeah, you can quit without problems as i did it in 2 sessions.

I tried to contact the devs about the pause, but no reply :(

I don't think leaving the game on pause has any impact on your time. I followed this guide and just paused without dashboarding all through the first half of it. and still had this achievement pop as I hit the end of the game.

Did this in 3 sessions, took me just under 3 hours. I quit the game after each session, just to be safe.

Pretty sure that when pausing the game, it DOES add towards the total as I definitely completed this in less than 3.5 hours and didn’t get achievement but did take a break to eat food halfway through. Happy to play again and just concentrate on the speed run as was a really fun game.

A small help. If you made a mistake and wasted time you should load the chapter and try again, the timer will start back from the loaded chapter.

I just did it over about 5 hours and used the pause function and it unlocked with no issues. It was a pleasant surprise, wasn't expecting it at all.

Excellent guide Clad ! Paused the game following the video, reloaded last checkpoint when I messed up or went back on the game, works like a charm !

Adding to the chorus of voices - I followed a guide all the way through (so didn't explore or stop running at all) and didn't get the achievement. I did pause and quick-resume a lot. Luckily (?) this game almost requires at least two playthroughs so hopefully my trash burning and speed run will combine for the 100%

I paused alot and spent over 210 minutes doing my run, but active playtime for me was around 170 hours with pauses so pauses absolutely stops the timer and can be used with no problems

Thanks !
So maybe the problem can be related to the Quick Resume ? Just a thought.

I messed up at the end after chapter 51 so I carried on till the end and never got the achievement

So I reloaded chapter 51 and played from there fixed my mistake and did it quicker and I got both achievements just before the credits so you CAN pause the game AND reload a chapter and continue from there

But good luck to anyone doing this because speedruns in games gets me stressed

wait so if you start from a certain chapter (for example chapter 48) would the speedrun timer start from there? sorry I am just confused and this one of the few achievements I have left to unlock

No, if you load chapter 48 after beating the game first, the game will load the timer you had a this time.

So, if you were at 4 hours at chapter 48, then finish the game, when you'll reload this chapter, you'll be back at 4 hours, not 0.

But you can use this method to reload an old save of you messed up a chapter. (Not very useful though)

I tried Lucylu1983's trick and went back to load 42 and speed up my time but with no way to see total play time I'm guessing I'm still over as it did not pop for me - oh well 2nd playthrough for such a fun and cool looking game - Thanks for the guide :-)
EDIT:
Got it on 2nd play through, I used a stopwatch and did it in 3:02:39 --- :-) THANKS

do you have to click start new game for this or can you load from chapter 1? Does that matter?

Thank you! This guide was awesome, I got it on my first playthrough. I can verify two things:

1) Pausing the game does seem to stop the timer.
2) Reloading a save game also seems to start from that save's timer, not the overall playthrough

I messed up quite a few chapters the first time I tried them, and accidently hit the button to waste fuel more times than I care to admit. I reloaded some chapters many, many times and still got the achievement at the end.

Now I can have a nice, leisurely playthrough!

Pausing definitely stops the timer. I spent over 240 minutes w/ pauses, but got this achievement just before credits rolled.

Is this another one like MYST that only can be done on PC, because I've made six attempts and I'm not close to getting this? I'm making the minimum of wasted moves and actually did this the last time with two minor pauses and still not close, like 30 minutes not close?

@TheodenKing Not to diminish your struggle, but Myst was absolutely doable on console

Beware I finished the game in 3hours I loaded the previous check points 2 times cuz I screwed up. It never popped for me. Do you have to quit for it to work? Cuz that was not mentioned in the comment bellow. WHAT A WAIST OF TIME. 3 HOURS F***!!! LOL.

Here is my 100% Achievement guide which includes the speedrun in 1 Playthrough!
So, even with some standing around and a few mess ups here and there, I still managed to get this complete in 3 Hours & 7 Minutes!
But a few things to note if you are worried about this one.

Pausing DOES stop the timer! So pause as long as you like.
Also, Yes, as the lovely LucyLu says in Clads comment section, if you mess up on a section or take too long, you can simply reload the last checkpoint (Very generous checkpoint system in the game) and try again without penalising yourself.
The timer will revert back to whatever it was before you started said section!

But honestly, Do not let this put you off, it is a great game, and can be easily achieved in 1 playthrough.
I wouldn't let you down, you know that wink

This may prove to be the hardest trophy of the game for you, or you may find your rythym on your first playthrough and get this with little effort. Either way, you will need to complete the game in under 210 miniutes (or 3 and 1/2 hours) It took me three attempts on my first time through the game on PS5, but I usually like to take my time, explore and enjoy the scenery on my first few runs of a game, so your experience may run faster than mine.

Either way, a few tips for traveling quickly through the game:
  • The speedrun can be done in multiple sittings as long as you select Continue when you pick the game back up. My successful speedrun (shown below) was completed over two nights, so there is no need to sit through all three plus hours of the game at one time for the trophy.
  • I suggest you still grab and load as much fuel as you can onto your vessel. Even if you have to backtrack a bit for a bunch of fuel items, they will help in the long run
  • If you are working on the Salvage Hunter trophy_silver.png, the fuel you collect will be good for your overall journey, but try to snag the containers and pull them up quickly so you don't waste too much time. If you are on a subsequent run and don't need to worry about the cargo, leave the few that you don't need to collect to open gates, etc. as the one or two peices of fuel won't be enough to justify the time wasted.
  • For both of the above tips, when possible, keep the vessel moving so you can keep moving forward. You can swim much faster than the ship moves, so its easy enough to catch up and not lose time in your journey.
  • While the Boost seems like it should be the fastest way to travel, I found it burns more fuel and takes more upkeep and moving parts than seems necessary to move quickly through the water. I would suggest instead that you combine both the engine running at full speed and the sail open at fully being pushed by a steady wind for maximum speed
  • A lot of time can be wasted on the fairly simple puzzles and little things you need to do to progress through the game. If you find you can't get the speedrun in your first playthrough, don't give up hope! You will have a much smoother time on a second run once you understand how every stop and barrier in your travels needs to be dealt with in order to move past it.
For a full platinum walkthrough of the entire game in under three hours and fifteen minutes, please watch the below four videos. This will show you every trophy in the game, including the four I get after my initial speedrun to round out the platinum:
