Destroy 5 Braincages

How to unlock the Set Them Free achievement in Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon - Definitive Guide

There are five braincaged dragons in the mission, "What Is This Shit?". They're all in the dragon egg area.

Burn the first group of eggs (just a single group, NOT an entire 'patch' of eggs - you do NOT want the objective to say 1/3). Two or three dragons (normally two) will appear. When you have removed the braincages of these two dragons, and THEN killed them, burn another single group of eggs (again, not an entire 'patch' of eggs). A third dragon should appear. Destroy his braincage, and then kill him.

You should always use your Terror 9000 weapon for killing these dragons. If at any time do you run out of ammo, run back to the vending machine that was next to the control that opened the door (where the snipers were waiting for you). You can get a free refill of ammo (to 700 bullets) if your Terror 9000 is empty by switching it with the bow in your inventory, and then switching the Terror 9000 back out.

Now destroy the first patch of eggs that you already burnt some eggs in. Now move to the next patch. When you burn some of these eggs, a 4th dragon should appear (it's possible that you'll get the achievement early, on this dragon, if you don't, continue.). Destroy his braincage, and then kill him. Now destroy the rest of the eggs in all the egg patches.

When you've done this, you'll be told to evacuate. Get back to the elevator. When you activate it, a 5th dragon with another braincage will come after you. Destroy it's braincage, and then kill him for the achievement, if it's not popped already.

I was still able to kill enough in this area, though the door closed on me and I couldn't restock any ammo.

This is a guide for those who missed their chance on the story mission.
There is a way to find more braincage dragons. You need to use the reset garrisons option (pause-options-gameplay-reset garrisons) to get them, so make sure you've done everything you need to using garrisons (capture them all, use as teleport points for collectible finding, etc).
Once you've done this there are a couple of garrisons you can use, I suggest the one that is north-east of the dam at the far west of the map. (coordinates 476.7, 470.3). There is a dragon with a brain cage right outside this. Shoot this off and kill the dragon if you want. Then you can reset the garrisons and the dragon will be back, with it's braincage on.
Repeat 5 times for the achievement.
Resetting garrisons is also a good way to get money for upgrades, as you can go round and capture them all again.

EDIT: Curtieson adds that you don't even need to reset garrisons to do this. Go to the garrison at (476.7, 470.3) and shoot the braincage off the dragon. Then fast travel to another garrison nearby, and drive back to (476.7, 470.3). The dragon should be back, with braincage on. Repeat 5 times for the achievement.

I just went to the exact garrison you called out, shot the cage off the dragon, fast traveled back to my close garrison and then drove back to repeat. The fast travel respawned the cage every time, and it popped as soon as I shot the cage off on the 3rd one in this process. SUPER simple for something I thought I missed. The fast travel then return was a God send.

Awesome, glad it worked for you! I'll add that to the solution, some people might not want to reset their garrisons

This achievement is missable as there are very few braincaged dragons in theventire game.

Some dragons are mind controlled by a little red box on their forefront. Simply shoot it until it explodes and before killing the dragon. Repeat this 5 times to get the achievement. Note that if you reload a checkpoint to a previous state after destroying a braincage, it won't count anymore.

You'll find those dragons in some missions (especially What is this Shit? where you burn eggs and the last mission) and sometimes near certain garrisons (I got one in 2 different garrisons).

Thanks guys for the additional info in the comments.

There were a whole bunch in the mission where you destroyed the dragon eggs. I got all 5 during that mission.

I'm not sure if this one is stackable across different games. If anyone tries, please let me know so I can edit the solution.

It should be noted that there is an unlimited number of Braincaged Dragons in the What is this Shit? mission.

Just got it by starting another game on easy mode. You can get all 5 in the "What is this..." mission, by killing (and destroying the braincage) the first 2 dragons, then killing the 3rd one, and then destroying the braincage of the 4th one. While waiting for the elevator after burning the eggs, the 5th dragon with brain cage shall appear. Unfortunately, the achievement isn't stackable across different games. The OP shall put on the solution that is achievement is missable, as the braincage dragons only appears in a limited number of missions, that cant be repeated

Can you restart the mission when you are on that mission. So you can respawn the dragons and kill them again?

@LiquidHotMAGMA9 No, no you cant. If you kill 2 dragons in that missions, and then die, you still need to kill 5, as those you killed before you saved don't count. There are exactly 5 dragons in that mission, so you wont have a problem if you kill them all.

The mission right after the one where you get Killstar (this might be last?) there are dragons with braincages. I have seen 2. But as far as I know, I have only destroyed 3, and I still got the achievement.

Same as the above two posters. I only destroyed the braincages on the 3 dragons in the "What is this Shit?" mission, and it unlocked. So it's glitched, but hopefully only in a good way.

do you need to kill the dragon for it to count or just the "helmet" they are wearing ?

Do you need to explode the braincage? Or can you just shoot it?

@ Amatorskii As far as i know you only have to destroy the cages. But I'm not sure since i also killed all dragons.

@ lolmanX0 You can just shoot them.

Confirmed that you don't need to kill the dragon and you can get this even if you missed most (probably all) the dragons in the "what is this shit" mission.

I did not read this guide till after this mission so I figured I was screwed. But I was approaching a random hostile outpost and found a dragon with a braincage. I shot the braincage off the dragon and backed away (did not kill the dragon nor liberate the outpost). I then walked up to several more outposts and eventually found enough dragons with braincages to pop the achievement.

This achievement is bugged. I destroyed 4, and i counted them from the beginning, and got my achievement on the 4th. Since Zalsha encountered the same thing, we can savely say it can possibly unlock before the 5th braincage.

This achievement is no longer difficult to get. If the achievement has not popped once the final level is beaten you are not stuck to wander and hope.

Once you complete the game to your content you can press Start -> Gameplay -> Reset Garrisons. This will make the Garrisons Red and repopulate the bases with Omega soldiers.

There is an underground base to the left of where you start out that has a Brain Cage Blood Dragon at the opening. The garrison that is directly south of where you start out also has a brain cage blood dragon to which you can easily pop off. Rinse and repeat until the achievement pops.

In certain parts of the game you may find some blood dragons that have a weird helmet on their heads, all you have to do is shoot it off their heads. Just make sure you don't actually kill the dragon.
