How to unlock the Heartless Pyro achievement in Far Cry 3 - Definitive Guide

What DAGGZODER said is all true, but if you finished the game like I did, and liberated all the outposts, it will be kinda hard to find that many (50) enemies.
However there is one place where they respawn. Its the airport on the seconde island. There is always 10-15 guys around plus outpost is very close so its easy to just fast travel there, buy ammo, go back and kill again. hope it helps.

Btw this is accumulative. Meaning if you die the counter does not reset.

Apparently this can include animals. Can anyone confirm? I'm only at about 15 at the moment.

There is no counter, and the kills count even if you die and reload.

There is a counter! Go to Handbook, press X for statistics, scroll down to Kills and select that, now scroll to the bottom of the list: Flamethrower kills (don't confuse that with the Fire Kills)

I would recommend going to an outpost, flaming a few (2-3) people at a time, run away and save your game. That way if you die, you know your kills will count.

Actuallyyy.... the kills do not transfer over when you die. At least not if you go into an outpost, kill people, and die to fight the enemies again. So if you want to fight enemies at an outpost for the Achievement, make sure to run away with at least 1 enemy left and then go back later.

I also saw a few people ask about checking the number of kills. To do so, go into your handbook, and under the progress tab press X. It will show all the info you'd need to know about your current play through. Including kills with a Flamethrower.

Actuallyyyyy... they do transfer over when you die. I just checked the count it was 20, went to an outpost on the South Island, killed 6 outpost enemies.. accidentally died and checked count again when I respawned. It was 26.

That said, it does not count if you die during an actual mission. I killed many during the Fly South/Protect Willis (asshole, i wanted to kill him myself after a few tries) so i decided to use it to boost this achievement, kill 50 and then do it for real but it never popped. Each time i died, or maybe it doesn’t count in actual campaign missions at all, the Slate was wiped clean.

I was stunned when i discovered here that you can look it up under Statistics/Kills/Flamethrower kills (make sure you actually select and click on Kills so you can scroll down), to see there was only 20 kills. I felt like i had killed hundreds on several missions.

But regular death outside a does not wipe the count.

*Animals do not appear to count. I killed a wild dog with it and my count did not rise**

The counter will reset to your last saved position if you obtain any during missions.

I can also confirm that it works against the Rakyat tribe, as well. I accidently turned them against me during the mission to burn down the weed fields, and got the last few kills needed for this achievement off of them.

You should update your solution with some of this information. Put in the coordinates for the airport, and mention that the Rakyat count as well. Kills keep increasing when you die as long as you are not in a mission, so post-game your death only costs you the trip back to the airport.

Also, it's worth noting that you never need to leave the airport once you get there. If you start at one end of the area and kill everyone all the way through to the other side, when you get done the first set of enemies will have respawned. (I did get slightly outside the gate at the far end, I'm not sure if that did it.) I got 40 kills at the airport in about five minutes just running back and forth. The best part is that you don't even need Fireproof because the whole place is cemented.

*This solution helps if you're still on the first island of the game and have not beaten the game.*

If you don't want to wait to get to the second island to complete this achievement, then just carry the flamethrower with you whenever you have the urge to liberate an outpost or complete a mission on the first island. You'll be able to get it in no time. Just be sure to craft yourself some 'Fireproof' syringes or you'll find yourself burning like the Human Torch the entire time you're going for this achievement, or at least I did...Good luck!

Another really easy method to do this when you have completed the game:

Just run with your flamethrower on the big main roads of the island. Every +/- 20 seconds you come across a jeep with 2 or 4 friendly military. They will stop for you when you are in de middle of the road. Just burn them with short bursts of fire. They only attack you once you start burning them (too late for them ;) ). Got the achievement in about 15 minutes with this method. I didn't die, and i only had to buy new ammo once.

If you're like me and have beaten the game and liberated all outposts this can be a bit challenging as there are very few enemies remaining, however there are a few locations where enemies will continually respawn. If you open up your map and find the coordinates 366.3 and 697.2 (upper left most island), this leads you to a shanty town near the ocean (you had to go here to rescue one of Jason's friends).

Another being an outpost called 'The Compound' on the second island. The quick travel feature will put you right now middle where you find many of Hoyt's of men to kill.

Some tips:

- Craft the larger canister holders, this allows you to kill more before needing to resupply.

- Spray the enemy for a second then stop. Most enemies will die from this small amount.

- Animals do not count, I killed a dozen or so animals to see but didn't get it.

This is not so much a solution but a bit of helpful advice. When going for this achievement, don't keep shooting flames at the enemy you are trying to kill until he dies, simply hit him with a short burst of flame and let the flame kill him once he is on fire. It took me almost 3/4 of a tank to kill each enemy until i finally realised that i simply had to hit him with a short burst of flame. Also craft some fireproof syringes, i can't tell you the amount of times i died when going for this achievement. Good luck everyone.

On the mission "Kick the Hornets Nest", where you have to burn down the 5 fields of weed, don't burn the fields and just keep killing guys. As far as I can tell they were infinite. They just kept coming and I just kept melting them. 50 no prob. Achievement unlocked!

If you have completed the game and are mopping up achievements (like me) the best place to do this is The Compound (364/377) .

You can easily run around the compound and enemies (and friendlies) will spawn constantly and you are next to a save point.

Make sure you tag them first (with your binoculars) and try to isolate them so you can burst one at a time. I was easily able to take down 9 enemies doing this. Note that killing friendliy Rakyat also counts, as soon as you start bursting them they will turn on you. After each killing spree, make sure you save, otherwise you will lose progress if you die. Note that enemy dogs and civilians do not count!

You can check your progress by going to the Handbook, select X for statistics, select kills and scroll down to flamethrower kills.

There is also a dock type place where you can do this also. I have all of the outposts done and the game almost beat so it kinda sucks to find people. Its located east of the Amanaki Outpost Cordinates X:545 Y:740 About 5 or 6 people are there and will keep coming for a bit. Short bursts with the flamethrower works best. Once you kill them all simply fast travel back to the outpost and walk back over. Hope this helps!

The way I did this one was To find three bases that were somewhat close to one another. Then I would attack one person the base and go to the outside of the base waiting for the others to come and get me. Of course someone would set off the alarm which would only bring more people for me to take care of. I would kill everyone but the last person in the base. Then I would move on to the next base. After clearing out all the bases( Except for the last person) and all the reinforcements you would get 30 people approximately by each time. Then simply Save and do something so that you Reload. I think I got it before even completed my second round. But I had already done the flamethrower Mission that I got earlier.

The Pot Fields mission is also a good area for kills

You can either purchase the flamethrower or wait until you are given one during a main mission. If you wait until you receive it for free (which I suggest you do), your mission is to burn some fields of marijuana. Simply do not burn the fields and keep burning enemies. As far as I could tell, enemies were infinite until you burn all the fields.

*Note- the mission to burn the fields is given to you after you meet the man in white in the shanty town.*

The Flamethrower can be found under the Specials menu when at a shop for a cost of $2400 or you can wait for it to become free by unlocking more Radio Towers. If you have the money, buy it and if you have any spare I'd purchase the upgrade for it as well. Now all you need to do is kill 50 enemies with it. The weapon itself is pretty good but you need to get in nice and close for it to really work. Though once you do set someone alight with it, it'll kill them in no time. One burst should do the job.

This is best used on Outposts. Let the alarm ring out, and you'll have a new group of enemies to kill. Take note that this only works on enemy NPCs. Killing animals does not add to the counter but you can provoke your Rakyat friends to attack you and doing so will then make them count as kills. To see how many kills you've earned, head into your Handbook and press to see your Statistics. Scroll down to Kills and you'll find it there.

The flamethrower can be equipped at any shop. You can either buy it for money, or activate radio towers to get it for free. Keep it in your inventory for several missions and try to kill as many enemies as possible with it. The enemies have to die by the fire from the flamethrower.
