How to unlock the Rock Always Wins achievement in Far Cry 3 - Definitive Guide

To fully distract enemies with rocks, one must throw it nearby them and allow them to investigate the location of where the rock landed. You must then allow them to look around and return to where they were before the distraction was created, and once they do, it'll count as a "full distract". It'd help if you marked your enemies before attempting to distract them first because you can analyse what they are doing, as well as know when they have completed their survey and started to return to their original patrol route. Repeat 24 more times across your vacation on Rook Island.

Good luck.
Please tell me why you negative voted because currently, this is the only guide that has explained what full distraction is, no offense (I will change the wording if you can't understand).

*EDIT* Thanks Rustybroom and Amatorskii (via comments); it seems to be that enemies can actually be distracted more than 3 times, so it is possible to grind this achievement on just one enemy.

*EDIT #2* It'd be nice if someone could confirm this statement, but it is very possible for a "full distract" to count when the distracted target is speaking after the rock was thrown (Pay homage to I SoLuS I for the info).

Guide looks spot on. I was always killing after distracting so that would explain why I still don't have it so thanks for clearing that up.

Sadly, the trolls here will probably still downvote but ignore them, they are idiots. It's a thumbs up from me.

Oh, that's awkward, as I thought it doesn't count if they are already alerted :l
Thanks for clearing up even more confusion, I'll edit my guide.

Also I noticed you don't have to wait until they go back to their original position, just until they say something like "I must be losing my mind." ect.

@SoLuS I got the achievement when they were speaking but my friend unlocked it when they were at their original position so if someone would gladly confirm the latter then I'd add it to the guide.

Can anyone confirm if the distracts you get count even if you die. For example, I distract a guy a few times but then I go full retard and get caught and die. Do those distracts I did count towards my total or are they wiped when I die?

Great Guide, up voted, also a great place to work on this is the targeted kills (those you have to knife) because of how all those guys have a set (and small) range.

"*NOTE* Enemies can only be distracted 3 times, after that, they will get suspicious and will not be able to be distracted anymore."

You should remove this statement if I am able to distract someone more than 3 times.

I agree, I got this by distracting the same enemy multiple times at the airport and the achievement popped when he lost interest and started to walk back to his original position.

I can confirm Rustybroom and Amatorskii's statement, I got the cheevo in the very first outpost mission, I hid in the tall grass behind 2 buildings and threw a rock at the back of the right building, and laughed every time the guard checked it.....

This is the very first achievement you can get. Early in the prologue/tutorial you will be taught how to throw rocks. Just keep throwing rocks 25 times before continuing on.

Grinded this Achievement during the Bled Dry mission (South Island after liberating North Krige Crest) at the first blood diamond location. Took out all but one guard, then used the cart in the middle to hide. Fling a rock at the building near the remaining guard, listen to his dialogue which will indicate when he's returned to patrolling. Rinse. Repeat. Didn't take very long.

@Caltrop: If you distract someone and you die, it will still counts (same as for kills with the flamethrower for example)
@leopardson: I'd like to hear why you downvoted, this contributed to my achievement and 69 others at the time of writing
@I SoLuS I & Hoitech: My achievement popped once the target went to check out the place where the rock landed. He did say 'This is starting to piss me off' when he heard the rock landing but that's a different scenario of what you guys have posted. Maybe it popped earlier for me then it did for you guys?

I got most of my distracts all on the same guard. I waited for a dialogue line and for him to turn around away from the rock, then simply threw another right in the same spot.

You can continue to distract the enemy even after he goes into paranoid mode as long as he doesn't find you. Just keep throwing more rocks and he'll still go over and investigate them.

You can farm this achievement in the trial named hide and seek, it's simple as soon as you spawn, throw a rock past both enemies, when they investigate the sound it will count towards your achievement simply fail the trial, rinse&repeat until it pops
(tested and confirmed by me)
This is also a great way to get the achievement if you've liberated all of the outposts and finished the story, at that point enemies become scarce, I hope this helps happy gaming! :)

Are the coordinates really necessary? Can't you just use RB on the map to pull up the list of Trials? It's the first one.

Yes, that is true @MightySleigher that you can pull up the list of trials in the menus but it makes you actually have to visit the rocks location before you can fast travel to it (you can tell when the red star turns black on the map), so I guess technically the coordinates do help (Thanks GWebb). A+ all around though, with the comments as well.

Hi Guys

Here is my Solution for this Achievement.

A counted Distract in Far Cry 3 is, when you throw a Rock near a Enemy and this Enemy investigate the point where land the Rock. After the investigate he must go back to his Startposition.

This is ONE Distract. Repeat this 25 Times and the Achievement is yours.

Hey guys,
You can actually grind this out during the 'Doppelganger'-mission once you get to the second island. After dropping into the cave and finding an enemy facing the docks, you should be in a hallway. To get this achievement easily, throw a rock towards the back of that hallway and the guy should go and check it out. Use the camera to make sure you can see the enemy and once he is back at his usual place, throw another one. He will say things like 'this is starting to piss me off' but he will never check out another area except the place where the rock landed. To give you a visual of the location, I included an image with all courtesy to IGN.

I hope this will help and good luck!

If you are still missing this achievement by the end of the game there are many enemies that will respawn at several places. The best place to do it i think it's The Compound (X: 364.5,Y:377.5) because there are groups of enemies that you can distract with one stone and while you are waiting for them to investigate you can move to another group in the area. You can go back and forth distracting groups until the achievement pops ! Check the video for more details. Good Luck !

Alright, so the best way I did this is simple but it will take loads of patience, so if you just want to sit back and relax, then go for this achievement. Travel to an outpost that you haven't liberated yet and look for a single enemy through your camera. Try to find one that is by himself and that isn't moving; it'll make your job much easier. After marking said enemy, proceed to cover near his location, but make sure you have a gap by him that you're able to throw the stone through. Since the guard is marked, you'll be able to see his every move. What you need to do is throw the stone at either a wall, the ground, a house, etc. But make sure that the location is nearby him so you won't have to wait even longer for him to walk over to the noise. After you throw the stone, hide if you're in plain view and if not, then wait for the guard to walk to where the noise was AS WELL AS back to his position he was at before. You must wait for him to complete this full cycle before throwing another stone. After he has returned to his position, throw the stone, wait, and repeat. If you haven't fully distracted any guards then this may take anywhere from 15-30 minutes to do, depending on where you throw the stone. I had already done it around 10 times previously, and it only took me about 15 minutes to complete the remaining throws. This is one of the easier achievements to get but takes some patience in order to do so. And be sure to keep a tally of how many times you've thrown the stone so that you don't get lost halfway through. Good luck and be careful not to be discovered!

To throw a rock press cn_right and Jason will throw a rock in the direction you're aiming.

Once a rock has been thrown near an enemy they will walk off to inspect what the noise was, after a few seconds of looking around they will return to their original location.

You will get a lot of these distractions though liberating outposts and playing the story but if like me you need to grind some there is a Trial at the coordinates X424.4 Y769.3 called 'Hide and Seek'. This trial spawns you behind two enemies, throw a rock with cn_right and slowly move behind the rock formation behind you. Watch them inspect your rock and once they have returned to their position aim near them again and throw another rock.

The trial gives you round a minute to do this and once the trial fails you can retry to continue grinding.

End game solution:
Go to the air base (2nd island). Southern part is full of trees for cover. Move alongside the southern wall and throw rocks. As there are lots of privateers, it wont take much time.
I won the achievement this way.

Just before you do the Medusa mission "3rd one I believe" there's a giant rock circle. Standing in it there is a guy who is usually sitting there cleaning his gun. Sneak up on the rocks behind him, tag him and then throw your rock 3 feet in front of him. I got him to walk the three feet 12 times and got the achievement (had been working on it earlier). So spam the heck out of it lol.

I found that the quickest/easiest way to do this is to farm while doing the Rakyat Trial called Hide and Seek. As soon as you start the trial you want to throw a rock over both of the enemies. They will walk towards it and investigate. When they are done investigating they will start to walk around some more. You can throw another rock to get their attention again. Keep rinsing and repeating.

If you happen to fail the trial, that's fine. Just load it up again.

This is definitely the way you want to do it if you have already completed the game. (Enemies will be few and far between at that point)

To distract an enemy, make sure you're within distance and press to throw a rock. If the rock lands within the right area, the enemy NPC will get distracted and walk to the spot where the rock landed. You now need to make sure that you do not attack him and let him walk away. Killing him before he starts to walk off, will void the distraction and not count towards achievement. Through the whole game you should be distracting enemies to get them into vulnerable positions, so this should unlock in no time.

Take note that some enemies like the snipers sometimes do not get distracted. Also, each enemy has about 3 distractions before they start to look elsewhere in the area. So don't throw all 3 in quick succession.

You can throw stones by pressing . The enemy will be fully distracted when he walks to the location where the stone landed. Do this to 25 different enemies. This trophy should come naturally while playing through the main story because there are some stealth missions where you are not allowed to get detected. Throwing stones makes it easy to sneak past enemies. You can also farm the 25 distractions at outposts. After liberating all outposts there are still enemies at the coordinates X: 412.4, Y: 729.5. Some people have reported that they needed much more than 25 distractions. Don't worry, the trophy is not bugged. Just keep distracting enemies and it will unlock sooner or later.
