This is similar in concept to More than 8 corns (90G). Just like bushes can sometimes drop fruits, chests can sometimes contain abilities. I don't believe these give you a new ability outright, but instead give you another set of totems to choose from after the current wave. Not only are chests rarer than bushes, but abilities in chests are rarer than fruits in bushes. There isn't really anything to do to speed this up though, aside from making it a point to check for chests at the beginning of each new wave. Personally, I unlock this early in my second run.
