How to unlock the A-Hunting We Will Go achievement in FINAL FANTASY IX - Definitive Guide
During your first trip to Lindblum, you will have to complete the Festival of the Hunt. You will control Zidane and the objective is to kill as many monsters to gain as many points as possible. In order to get Vivi to win, Zidane and Freya must both lose.
Play with Zidane as normal until about 4:30 is left and go to the Business District. The Zaghnol will be there to fight. When you begin the battle, Freya joins in as a playable character. Either let the Zaghnol kill you, or just attack yourselves. Once both characters are defeated, the Festival will be over and Vivi will be the winner.
good solution!
In order to have Vivi win, both Freya and Zidane must forfeit by dying. To get this to happen be in the Business District and go to the Square after the counter gets down to 4:30 or less. A Zaghnol will have spawned and they will fight together under your control. Simply have them both attack themselves until they die and Vivi will the hunt netting you this trophy during the following scene.
MISSABLE
The Festival of the Hunt takes place during your first visit to Lindblum during Disc 1 and the winner is the competitor who gains the most points by killing enemies. To win it with Vivi is very simple but requires a bit of patience.
Firstly, go to the Theatre District as Zidane to start the 12-minute timer. Unfortunately, Freya will win the Hunt if Zidane dies in battle (either killed by an enemy or by committing suicide). The only way to let Vivi win is to kill Freya too but that's only possible when she joins Zidane in the fight against the Zaghnol. However, he only appears in the Plaza of the Business District with 4 minutes and 30 seconds remaining and even the High Speed cheat doesn't speed up the timer, making this a bit of a boring wait.
After waiting until the clock runs down to 4:30, enter the Plaza and fight the Zaghnol. Immediately kill Zidane and Freya (the quickest way to do this is just by attacking yourself) then Vivi will win by default and net you this trophy.
You may want to save before the Festival and reload once you have this trophy, because letting Freya win (which you can do within seconds by killing yourself as Zidane) is the best course of action. Her prize is a Coral Ring, which is a very useful accessory at this stage of the game as it absorbs all Thunder elemental attacks and far more useful than 5,000 Gil (Zidane’s prize) or a Theatre Ship card (Vivi's prize).
At the end of your visit to Lindblum on Disc 1, you will participate in a mini-game to hunt monsters that are loose in the town. You will play as Zidane, but must manipulate things to allow Vivi to win for this achievement. The easiest way to do this is to make your way to the business district killing as few monsters as possible, and let the clock run down to 4:30 left. Then, enter the shop area (the NE exit from the square) to find a Zaghnol enemy attacking some kids. Engage the monster and Freya will join you in battle. During this fight, use attack commands on yourself to kill Zidane and Freya, and upon their deaths they will be eliminated from the event, defaulting the win to Vivi and unlocking the achievement.
In order for Vivi to win, both Zidane and Freya must be defeated in battle. Don't worry, during the Festival this doesn't count as a game over. In order to do this, you must wait until there is under 5 minutes on the clock, and go to the Square in the Business District. There is an item shop, weapon shop, and synthesis shop in the area. Here you will see the Zaghnol threatening two children. Zidane and Freya will team together for the fight. Have Freya and Zidane attack Freya until she is KO'd, then have Zidane attack himself. Once both are KO'd, a message will appear that Zidane and Freya have been retired. A scene will then play in the castle where Vivi receives the award for winning the Festival. The achievement should pop here.
