How to unlock the Beach Bum achievement in FINAL FANTASY IX - Definitive Guide

Guide copied from Jegged.com, which has maps and screenshots: https://jegged.com/Games/Final-Fantasy-IX/Side-Quests/Chocob...

This isn't as simple as standing on any beach you encounter throughout the game, you will first have to have a gold chocobo.

START THE QUEST

Return to the Chocobo’s Paradise after you have completed the Chocograph side quest, the Chocobo Dive Spots side quest and the Chocobo Mountain Cracks side quest.

The Chocobo’s Paradise is located in the northwestern corner of the map in the middle of the ocean. Fly your Chocobo over to the island (which does not appear on the mini-map) and use a Dead Pepper on the crack in the mountain to gain entry.

Speak to the Fat Chocobo and a short cutscene will begin involving Choco and Mene. Fat Chocobo will give Zidane the Fat Chocobo Card. Go back into Chocobo’s Paradise and challenge Fat Chocobo to a game of Tetra Master. Fat Chocobo will talk about visiting each of the worlds beaches and restoring them.

FINDING THE BEACHES

There are 21 beaches to find in total. When standing on a beach, an icon with water and an exclamation mark will appear above Zidane's head. Press cn_B to hear a chime and that beach will be checked off.

Mist Continent
- Makiki Beach
- Metalark Shores
- Nomarania Beach
- Tuhanda Shores
- Eesistern Coast
- Togull Beach
- Derek Beach

Outer Continent
- Banyano Shores
- Kognish Shores
- Gegalrish Shores
- Falstead Coast
- Shengalasta Shores
- Dyshnose Shores

Lost Continent
- Ryuki Shores
- Quelmiera Shores.

Lanshake Island, Island on the south side of Mist Continent
Commure Shores, Mognet Central island
Everlang Island, west side of the Forgotten Continent
Lanar Island, south of Everlang Island
Salvage Archipelago, southwest of Lanar Island and near Chocobo’s Lagoon
Palmnell Island, same island where the Chocobo’s Lagoon is located

You can now press the cn_B Button on any beach to completely restore your the HP and MP of your party members.

TIPS FOR FINDING BEACHES
For the Mist Continent, I just ran around the entire coast with my chocobo and press cn_B on every beach. There's an island south of the Chocobo Forest, Lanshake Island, that I missed on my first run around, so don't forget to grab that.

For the Outer Continent, do the same. Run around the coast and just check off beaches as you encounter them.

There are only two locations on the Lost Continent, and the Forgotten Continent has no beaches, but it does have a bunch of green islands at the south of the continent.

I know your link marks them on the map, but your written guide is missing two beaches on the Lost Continent: Ryuki Shores and Quelmiera Shores.

I'd found all the bubbles and cracks but I think because I chose to continue instead of loading a save some of the bubbles didn't save and I had to collect them again before the Fat chocobo told me about the beaches. Once he did it was very quick to visit them all using the map.

NOT as easy as it seems.

First uncover every hidden treasure in the game. All 24 Chocographs (see "Diggin' it") and the hidden treasures. These are found under ocean bubbles and in mountain cracks.

Ocean Bubbles:
Requires ocean Chocobo, use a dead pepper once you are at the bubbles

In a small inlet on the Southern tip of the Forgotten Continent.
On the east part of the Outer Continent, in the desert region, a peninsula juts south towards the Mist Continent. A little way South-West into the ocean from here, there is a cluster of bubbles.
Directly North or the Iifa Tree, you can see on the map that the North-East corner of the Lost Continent and the island North of the Outer Continent arc towards each other. If you imagine a hypothetical line arcing between them, go to the middle of it to find this bubble.
Inspect the foam in Quan's Dwelling, near Treno, to dive into it.
After returning from Terra, use a Dead Pepper in the exact location where Shimmering Island used to be. There are no bubbles to distinguish the location this time so this takes some trial and error.

Mountain cracks:
Requires mountain Chocobo. Some mountains have cracks, stand on these and use a dead pepper.

Once you obtain the Blue Narciss , travel to the Lost Continent and search the area in the North-East for a crack on the side of the mountain.
Once you gain access to the Forgotten Continent, go to the eastern side of the continent, North of Oeilvert. There is a small enclosed area with a tiny forest and on the side of the mountain is this crack.
Just north-west of Oeilvert, a little south of the second crack, is a mountain area with two layers to it. Facing South-East, one of the mountain sides has a thick black line down the side of it.
Go to the very north-west corner of the map and you will find a small island in the middle of the ocean. You will need a Golden Chocobo to access this crack as there are no nearby tracks or beaches, just a forest to land in. In the side of the mountain here is a crack that grants access to Chocobo's Paradise.
North of the Outer Continent is a talon-shaped island, which has a mountain with a large crack in it. This is the entrance to Mognet Central.

When all this is done, return to Chocobo Paradise and talk to the Fat Chocobo. He will give you his Tetra Master card and some scenes involving Mene and Choco will play out. After that, return to the Fat Chocobo and challenge him to a card game. Instead, he will tell you to visit all of the beaches on the world map.

There are 21 beaches to visit and now when you visit one, a symbol showing an exclamation mark on top of waves will appear above Zidane's head. Press circle when this symbol appears, then a chime will play. Once you've done this on all 21 beaches, a message stating "Watched the waves around the world and relaxed!" appears and the trophy will unlock. From then on, any time you visit a beach, pressing will replenish the party's HP and MP and remove any abnormal status effects.

The 21 beaches:

Mist Continent:

Derek Beach
Eesistern Coast
Makiki Beach
Metalark Shores
Nomarania Beach
Togull Beach
Tuhanda Shores

Outer Continent:

Banyano Shores
Dyshnose Shores
Falstead Coast
Gegalrish Shores
Kognish Shores
Shengalasta Shores

Lost Continent:

Quelmiera Shores
Ryuki Shores

Miscellaneous:

Commure Shores - The talon shaped island North of the Outer Continent, where Mognet Central is located.
Everlang Island - The long island West of the Forgotten Continent.
Lanar Island - The island South of the Forgotten Continent where the Qu's Marsh is located.
Lanshake Island - The small island due South of Chocobo's Forest.
Palmnell Island - The island next to Daguerreo, where the Chocobo's Lagoon is found.
Salvage Archipelago - The island East of Daguerreo, with the chocobo tracks.

Unfortunately, this trophy is not as simple as the description would suggest and actually requires a lot of effort. Simply flying around and visiting every beach in the game is not enough. You also cannot complete it until Disc 4.

Firstly, you will need to find every single hidden treasure in the game. This includes the 24 Chocographs (for details on where to find these, refer to Diggin' It), plus the hidden treasures.

The hidden treasures are split up into two sections: ocean bubbles and mountain cracks.

Ocean bubbles

Ocean bubbles are clusters of bubbles found in a few select locations once you get an Ocean Chocobo and if you eat a Dead Pepper on top of them (obtained from digging in Chocobo Lagoon once you have a Mountain Chocobo), Choco will dig underwater and emerge with treasure. The locations are as follows:

  1. In a small inlet on the Southern tip of the Forgotten Continent.
  2. On the east part of the Outer Continent, in the desert region, a peninsula juts south towards the Mist Continent. A little way South-West into the ocean from here, there is a cluster of bubbles.
  3. Directly North or the Iifa Tree, you can see on the map that the North-East corner of the Lost Continent and the island North of the Outer Continent arc towards each other. If you imagine a hypothetical line arcing between them, go to the middle of it to find this bubble.
  4. Inspect the foam in Quan's Dwelling, near Treno, to dive into it. For a more detailed explanation, see The Ultimate Racket.
  5. On Disc 4, use a Dead Pepper in the exact location where Shimmering Island used to be. There are no bubbles to distinguish the location this time so this takes some trial and error. For a more detailed explanation, see The Ultimate Dual Blade.

Mountain Cracks

Once you have a Mountain Chocobo, you can find cracks in various mountains around the world. Stand in front of these and use a Dead Pepper and Choco will break through the crack and net you a treasure. The locations are as follows:

  1. Once you obtain the Blue Narciss on Disc 3, travel to the Lost Continent and search the area in the North-East for a crack on the side of the mountain.
  2. Once you gain access to the Forgotten Continent later in Disc 3, go to the eastern side of the continent, North of Oeilvert. There is a small enclosed area with a tiny forest and on the side of the mountain is this crack.
  3. Just north-west of Oeilvert, a little south of the second crack, is a mountain area with two layers to it. Facing South-East, one of the mountain sides has a thick black line down the side of it.
  4. Go to the very north-west corner of the map and you will find a small island in the middle of the ocean. You will need a Golden Chocobo to access this crack as there are no nearby tracks or beaches, just a forest to land in. In the side of the mountain here is a crack that grants access to Chocobo's Paradise.
  5. North of the Outer Continent is a talon-shaped island, which has a mountain with a large crack in it. This is the entrance to Mognet Central.

Finally, when all this is done, return to Chocobo Paradise and talk to the Fat Chocobo. He will give you his Tetra Master card and some scenes involving Mene and Choco will play out. After that, return to the Fat Chocobo and press to challenge him to a card game. Instead, he will tell you to visit all of the beaches on the world map.

There are 21 beaches to visit and now when you visit one, a symbol showing an exclamation mark on top of waves will appear above Zidane's head. Press when this symbol appears, then a chime will play and the symbol will disappear. Once you've done this on all 21 beaches, a message stating "Watched the waves around the world and relaxed!" appears and the trophy will unlock. From then on, any time you visit a beach, pressing will replenish the party's HP and MP and remove any abnormal status effects.

The 21 beaches are listed below. The ones on the three continents (the Forgotten Continent mainland has no beaches) can easily be found by following the shoreline. The miscellaneous ones below require a bit more exploration.

Mist Continent

  1. Derek Beach
  2. Eesistern Coast
  3. Makiki Beach
  4. Metalark Shores
  5. Nomarania Beach
  6. Togull Beach

Outer Continent

  1. Banyano Shores
  2. Dyshnose Shores
  3. Falstead Coast
  4. Gegalrish Shores
  5. Kognish Shores
  6. Shengalasta Shores

Lost Continent

  1. Quelmiera Shores
  2. Ryuki Shores

Miscellaneous

  1. Commure Shores - The talon shaped island North of the Outer Continent, where Mognet Central is located.
  2. Everlang Island - The long island West of the Forgotten Continent.
  3. Lanar Island - The island South of the Forgotten Continent where the Qu's Marsh is located.
  4. Lanshake Island - The small island due South of Chocobo's Forest.
  5. Palmnell Island - The island next to Daguerreo, where the Chocobo's Lagoon is found.
  6. Salvage Archipelago - The island East of Daguerreo, with the chocobo tracks.

Below is a map showing the location of all 21 beaches:

To unlock this achievement, you must complete a side-quest given by Fat Chocobo in Chocobo's Paradise. However, there is a bit of pre-work for the quest to be available.

First, you need to get an Ocean and Mountain Chocobo (see "Diggin' It" for how to unlock these) and find five secret areas with each. To unlock the secret areas, you need Dead Pepper items which come from digging after upgrading to the Mountain Chocobo. Once you have ten Dead Peppers, see this solution on PST for the secret area locations.

After you have found all the secret areas, the beach hunt can actually begin. Return to Fat Chocbo for a scene, then challenge him to a card game. Instead, he will challenge you to visit all the beaches. Return to the solution on PST I linked above for a list of all 21 beaches. Inspect each beach when you see the exclamation point (!) above your head to hear a chime sound. Once you hear the chime on the final beach you will get the message "Watched the waves around the world and relaxed!" and the achievement will unlock.

A fundamentally incorrect tip that is misleading. To get this trophy you need to collect all the chocobo treasures and find 10 heavenly places with treasures, the center could also be in this ten, having received all the treasures you need to talk to the fat chocobo by pressing the square button, then visit all the beaches, there will be a wave symbol on them and press circle button, having visited all the beaches you can be treated and remove all ailments and a trophy
