How to unlock the Beating the Ragtime Blues achievement in FINAL FANTASY IX - Definitive Guide

The Ragtime Mouse is a friendly enemy that appears in certain areas on the world map in(!) forests. In order to spawn these, you need to be just barely walking through the forest in a fashion that you won't see the leaves rustle, but your character does. Once one of these guys pop up, they have 16 different questions for you, one per encounter and in a totally random way of being asked, but below is a list of correspondent answers.
Please keep in mind, NOT to attack the Ragtime Mouse, as this will scare him away, even if you do more damage than the HP it has itself.

First time I encountered one, was before I headed towards Burmecia, then another two times in a row (after 30 min have passed and figuring out how it spawned).
Anyway, they appear in the following ways:

After leaving the Evil Forest to before arriving at the Outer Continent, you can encounter it 4 times.
Arriving at the Outer Continent to before getting the Hilda Garde III, you'll get another 6+ times to find it.
After gaining the Hilda Garde III, all encounters available, anywhere.

Once again, these questions will be asked in random order, so pause the game and check the list here which answer you need to "attack" in the game:
Chocobo Forest is located between Lindblum and South Gate. - True

Lindblum Castle is larger than Alexandria Castle. - True

Some Mus are friendly and don't attack. - True

Theater Ship Prima Vista uses Mist as its source of energy. - True

Berkmea cable cars have been running for eight years. - True

Lindblum's air cabs operate around the clock. - True

Treno's cafe, Card Carta, is members only. - True

Bobo bird is a bird that brings you fortune. - False

The 15th Lindblum War started in 1600. - False

The Theater Ship Prima Vista was built in Artania Shipyards. - False

"I Want To Be Your Canary" was written by Lord Afon. - False

Fossil Roo is a tunnel that connects Treno and Alexandria. - False

Only one desert exists in the entire world. - False

Conde Petie is a village of Goblins. - False

Prima Vista means love at first sight. - False

After answering all the questions above, your final encounter question will be:
You can defeat Ragtimer. - True.

One more encounter is left with it, and an award will be given for answering all questions right.
That's it, and good luck with this crazy hunt.

They don't. I'm not sure if this is missable if you screw up...

So this is missable? I've seen that if you accidentally get one wrong he'll never ask you the same question again, is that true?

Just to clarify, I've done some research on this one after I got a question wrong and wanted to make sure whether or not I could still get it. Apparently not, so make sure you answer correctly whenever you encounter him.

Also - be careful entering forests if you are using the auto attack feature as you'll hit one of the targets straight off. Hadn't even realised I'd hit one of these until the second one popped up.

Plus one for noting that you must encounter him an extra time for the achievement. I was using another guide that didn’t say that and I was panicking a little. Glad I checked here before writing it off till my next playthrough.

@Unveil Beast the ragtime mouse can be encountered in any forest, after 10 seconds on the field. so exit battle or area, wait 10 seconds, start moving enter battle, if ragtimer answer correctly, if not defeat enemy, rinse and repeat.

@HEYOOO after you answer a question he tells you your correct percent, of you've never gotten one wrong, it will always be 100%

I haven't tested it yet but when I turned on auto battle with RT my party automatically attacked the correct answer, dunno if it was just luck but I will look into it further and see if they just attack True automatically or not.

Just to be extra clear, after you have answered all of the questions correctly, including the "You can defeat Ragtimer" question, you have to encounter it one additional time to get the Protect Ring and the Achievement.

completing the above guides. there is a method in which makes the encounter with the Rangtime Mouse 100%

1 - Go to the forest around the Black magic village.

2- of small touches on the D-pad, enough not to "spread the leaves".

about 2-3 minutes it appears, repeat these steps until you complete your hunt.

Good luck

This is an awesome tip! By the time I reached this forest, I was starting to drive myself nuts trying to get this mouse to spawn. I wound up encountering it 8 times in about 15 minutes, taking my total up to 10.

The only bad thing is the game doesn't tell you when you've maxed out your encounters with the Ragtime Mouse for that "disc." So just know that the first time you reach the Outer Continent, where the Black Mage Village forest is, you can encounter him up to 10 times, and you'll have to return later for the other 6 encounters!

Personally, I only started working on this on disc 4 (after pandemonium) as none of the encounters are permantly missable. Just get to the big forest around Black Mage Village and tap left/right to go in a big circle within it. At time of writing, have one more to get but got the others exactly this way.

Worth further noting the encounter won't occur until 20 seconds after your last battle or encounter with the Ragtime Mouse, so you should wait a moment before continuing with the D-pad tapping.

I just wanted to add that this achievement is missable. If you get any question wrong he will not ask a second time so you can not get this achievement.

I got 93% and the protect ring, but I did not get the cheeve. Be careful if he shows up, pause it and get the right answer.

Ragtime Mouse is a special enemy you may encounter in forests throughout Gaia. When encountered he will be accompanied by an O and an X. He will ask you a true/ false question (hence the pop quiz) which you answer by attacking O for true and X for false. To win this trophy you must answer all 16 questions correctly and then encounter him for a 17th time.

He will appear a maximum of four times before the events in Burmecia, six or more times before the battle at the Iifa Tree, six or more times before gaining the Invincible airship. After that he will appear indefinitely until you answer all questions.

To get him to appear the best strategy is to enter a forest. Then tap the direction stick/ D-pad very lightly so that the forest isn't disturbed (but Zidane still moves). This will give you a good chance of getting into a battle with Ragtime.

The questions and there answers:

- False

After answering the above 15 which will appear randomly, the 16 th question will always be:

You can defeat Ragtimer. - True

You will then need to encounter him a 17th time when he will give you your results, he will then explode and you will receive a Protect Ring. The trophy will pop shortly after.

Great solution. I would add for those having trouble getting him to appear - on disc 4 enter the invincible (all the way to the bridge) then exit back to the main world. Then do the trick of moving without rustling the leaves. I got him to appear far more consistently than using the rustling leaves trick alone.

That tapping trick works great. I got 10 straight encounters by the Black Mage village on Disc 4. Took a bit of time for the encounter to trigger, but it was always the Ragtime Mouse. Thanks.

Ragtime Mouse is a random friendly encounter that can happen in the game's forest terrain on the world map. Each time you come across him, he will ask you a True/False question. You MUST get all of these right or you will fail the achievement, so be very careful when you encounter him. As soon as he asks the question, pause your game and be sure you have the correct answer, then use an attack command to hit the X for a false answer and O for a true answer.

Ragtime can only be encountered a specific amount of times depending on where you are in the game. You can find him up to 4 times on Disc 1, 6 more on Disc 2, and the final 6 on Disc 3. These are cumulative, so if you never see him and you're on Disc 4, you can get all 16 encounters. While these encounters are random, it has been discovered that if you tap your movement button very slowly in any direction and move without seeing a rustle of leaves show up on-screen, you can sort of force the encounter to happen. It's not foolproof, but it's better than running full speed and hoping for the best.

Now, once you have had all 16 encounters and successfully answered every question correctly, you'll need a final 17th encounter to actually unlock the achievement. The full list of questions and answers is found in the missable thread I linked in the Road Map, which you should know by now to have up at all times as you play through the game.

Wait Until You Get To Disc 4 (Or Get The Hilde Garde Mark III) To Do This Achievement.
- Previous Sections Of The Game Will Not Let You Answer The Full Amount Of Questions You Need To Get The Achievement.
- Do Not Attack Ragtime Mouse Or It Automatically Fails You.
- You Have Roughly Twenty Seconds To Answer Each Question.
- Answer A Question By Attacking The True Or False Totem Next To Ragtime Mouse.

The Ragtime Mouse Can Only Be Found In Forest Areas.

Below: List Of Questions S/He May Ask You (And Their Answers), But The Sequence In Which S/He Asks Them Is Random, Except For The Last One "You Can Defeat Ragtime Mouse?"; Which Will Always Be The Last Question.

The Ragtime Mouse is a special friendly enemy that, when encountered, will ask you a 'True or False?' question about the world of Final Fantasy IX. In total, the Ragtime Mouse asks sixteen questions. In order to obtain this trophy, you must find the Ragtime Mouse and answer all 16 of its questions correctly then encounter it once more for the 17th and final time.

The Ragtime Mouse can only be found in the forests across Gaia and will never be found in any other type of terrain. Encountering the Ragtime Mouse in a forest is random, although it can only be encountered a certain number of times per Disc. It can be encountered four times in Disc 1, six times in Disc 2, six times in Disc 3 and indefinitely in Disc 4. These times are cumulative. For example: If it was never encountered in Disc 1, it can be encountered ten times in Disc 2.

You will know you have encountered the Ragtime Mouse when the battle music is the same, more peaceful, jingle as the one that plays for friendly enemies. The Ragtime Mouse is always accompanied by a O and a X. It will ask one 'True or False?' question per encounter and you must attack the O if your answer is True or X if your answer is False.

There is an easy trick you can exploit to force a Ragtime Mouse encounter. Enter the world map from any location and make your way to a forest without getting into a random battle. Turn on the Safe Travel booster to facilitate this. When you reach the forest, press and save the game with Moguo. Turn off the Safe Travel booster and lightly tap the to walk around the forest. Zidane should slightly move each time. If you see the forest rustling, you are pressing too hard. When you get into a random encounter, it should be the Ragtime Mouse. If not, reload and try again. Once you've encountered him, as soon as the battle screen shifts back to the world map, you can tap around the forest again and find him immediately. Keep repeating this until you’ve exhausted the encounters for that Disc.

The Ragtime Mouse asks a total of sixteen questions in a random order. The questions he asks are as follows.

  • Chocobo Forest is located between Lindblum and South Gate. True
  • Lindblum Castle is larger than Alexandria Castle. True
  • Some Mus are friendly and don't attack. True
  • Theatre Ship Prima Vista uses Mist as its source of energy. True
  • Berkmea cable cars have been running for eight years. True
  • Lindblum's air cabs operate around the clock. True
  • Treno's cafe, Card Carta, is members only. True
  • Bobo bird is a bird that brings you fortune. False
  • The 15th Lindblum War started in 1600. False
  • The Theater Ship Prima Vista was built in Artania Shipyards. False
  • "I Want To Be Your Canary" was written by Lord Afon. False
  • Fossil Roo is a tunnel that connects Treno and Alexandria. False
  • Only one desert exists in the entire world. False
  • Conde Petie is a village of Goblins. False
  • Prima Vista means love at first sight. False

Once you've answered these 15 questions, the Ragtime Mouse will ask one final question during your next encounter with him.

  • You can defeat Ragtimer. True

Once you've answered the Ragtime Mouse's final question, encounter him one last time and he will exclaim how unbelievable it is that you've answered every question correctly. The trophy will pop soon afterwards.

On the global map, in addition to enemies, you can meet friendly monsters, as well as a certain Ragtime Mouse. He will ask questions that we need to answer correctly. You need to answer everything correctly. How to do this and more about this weirdo below:

If you suddenly missed the question itself (you were in a hurry or distracted), then my advice to you is better to load from any nearest save. Even if you decide not to answer the question at all, he will simply run away and the question will not be counted towards you. This happened to me, I missed the question itself while speeding up, decided not to answer, went further along the plot and in the end I did not receive the trophy. In the end I only got 93%. Sadly.

All 16 questions will be available as soon as you take control of the Blue Narciss ship according to the plot (end of chapter 26).
The forest can be absolutely anything.
About small steps:
If Ragtime Mouse stops appearing (10% chance) - just save (or enter a city/building) and it will start appearing again (this resets it, since the monster is designed for one encounter per session of the global map - but this only applies normal steps )
My video is clear (triggered by a collision with him 4 times in a row) --
https://youtu.be/iBlYvgj8kH8 .

The same method (with incomplete steps) also triggers collisions with friendly monsters.
