How to unlock the Bloodlust achievement in FINAL FANTASY IX - Definitive Guide

Strap in, this is going to take a while. If you are going to grind this early on using any of the following methods, make a separate save file if you don't want to play through the rest of the game with at least one extremely OP character and more gil than you'll ever need.

Introduction and Suggested Grinding Locations

The best places to grind this achievement are places where large groups of enemies regularly spawn, or the few locations where battles are automatically started

Personally, I ground this out in the Ice Cavern, where large groups of Flans regularly spawn. I'll add/update a list of other decent locations if people suggest any.

TG Airborne 88 suggests the interior of Gizamaluke's Grotto as another option if you've passed a certain point in the game. In fact, this could be the best option outright, as groups of 3-4 enemies regularly spawn.

Set up

There are three options to grind out this achievement, and your choice will largely be influenced by your patience and available time. I strongly advise going for this achievement after you obtain Steiner's Blood Sword by handing in 4 Stellazzio Coins to Queen Stella in Treno, because the sword enables Steiner to heal upon attacking enemies, negating the need to worry about healing and so on.

Note: It's up to you if you want to use the fastforward and/or 9999 damage boosters. The boosters won't void this achievement.

Important: Before you start grinding, go into the options menu and turn battle introduction/animation off. This disables the camera panning at the start of every battle, saving you a few seconds each battle. This will save you about 3 or 4 hours in total - half a day's work! Thanks to Shadykilla420 for this tip.

Method One

With a Blood Sword equipped Steiner, head to Ice Cavern (or grinding area of your choice), run around in circles and press A for 60-70 hours.

Method Two

If you have some kind of turbo controller, repeat the famous Disc 2 AFK grind in with Steiner in Alexandria Castle - the area mentioned in the introduction section of this guide - where the enemies spawn infinitely and run into you, instigating a battle.

Chunkeh Monkeh pointed out you can simply press RT to enable autobattle, meaning you don't need a turbo controller or script for this method.

LordRex172's suggestion: Combine this method with method 3 below. Namely, set up an Auto Keyboard script that spams the enter button in Alexandria where the enemies spawn infinitely. This could actually be the best way to get this achievement.

Method Three

Some people will be uncomfortable with this option, and I am not necessarily advocating this method, but it is a way to complete the achievement nonetheless.

Step 1. Download FF9 on your PC from the Microsoft Store.
Step 2. Download Auto Keyboard (https://www.murgee.com/auto-keyboard/ - the site is safe, but take all necessary precautions you always take when downloading things from the internet).
Step 3. Open 3 Auto Keyboard menus: set one to press the down button, set another to press the left button, set another to press the enter button. For the down and left buttons, tick the "hold key box". For the enter button, press it every 100 milliseconds.
Step 4: Navigate to your grinding area of choice (anywhere on the world map, ideally with Steiner and the Blood Sword).
Step 5: Turn on the fastforward and 9999 damage boosters.
Step 6: Turn on the three Auto Keyboard setups, return to your computer in 30-40 hours time.

Method 3, detailed above, is designed for the world map, and no "interior location". If you want to grind in an interior location, open two more Auto Keyboard windows with options for "up" and "right" as well, and set them up so the buttons are pressed in intervals so your character can run around in circles instead of running into a new area. However, given how effortless this is, just go for the simpler method described above and do it anywhere on the world map where weak enemies can be found.

Note: if you don't have Steiner presently, or you missed the Blood Sword, you can turn on the "battle assistance" booster which restores your HP to full so long as you don't get one-hitted. The downside to this is that lots of time will be wasted as the trance animation plays out at the beginning of every battle. If you use the battle assistance booster instead of the Blood Sword, it would probably be best to KO all but one character so only one trance animation plays instead of four. Just make sure the monsters you'll be fighting can't one-hit you or afflict you with Stop, Petrify, Death, Doom or anything like that (use abilities accordingly).

As ever, drop any questions/comments in the comments below, or PM me if you're shy.

Inside the Grotto is quite decent, as you can get 4 enemies at once. Other than that, outside Dali isn't so bad endgame (you can sometimes gets 3 enemies at once, just watch out for the dracozombies and their virus breath).

Honestly, I think inside the Grotto is ideal at this stage in the game - you can one shot everything. Needless to say, autohaste and autoregen (if you're using a party of 4 and not just Steiner) can speed things up considerably.

Guess I'll do that then for the next coming few days xD currently at 14 (probably almost 15) percent of the 10k. Such a boring grind, reminds me of Gears and Battlefield Hardline, all lengthy grinds, which suck imo. I could've lived with 5k, but 10 is too much.

Yeah man, it's a pain in the neck. At least with this you can go on autopilot and read/watch a film while grinding it out though. Keep plugging away, it'll pop eventually. dance

You can also combine method 2 and 3. Get the bloodsword for Steiner before the Alexandria part. Set up a script for just pressing A as the enemies come to you.

I believe so, but I'm not 100% sure. I don't know if you can backtrack to those guards from a save point.

I know you can just use the "Continue" feature from the main menu to resume from the last time you entered an area, so perhaps you could use that if you wanted to split the sessions up.

Sadly not. I've just done a rough calculation there. 357xp per soldier. Divide by 2 to get 178 because Marcus gets half as well. Multiply by 5000 for the achievement, you're looking at 900k xp more or less. I think need 6.7m or something for level 99.

i just reloaded the save and checked.. i killed marcus and had Steiner use the Level Up Ability i got 714 XP per Battle x 5000 = 3,570,000 XP :/ oh well was worth the try.

An easy place to do this is when escaping the evil forest. You can get there within 15 minutes of starting a new game, use speed and max damage modifiers constantly fight 3/4 monsters at a time if your health gets low turn on the trance mod for one turn

Unfortuently didnt consider this achievement until end game so got stuck with this achievement grinding in the grotto. Worked out it took about 11 -12 min for 1% with auto haste and regen on all 4 characters. A major grind of an achivement glad to see the back of it now its done. Good luck to all those that stick with it, and happy gaming.

Surprised this isn't in either solution, but if you press y and go to config you can turn on skip battle camera to skip the short beginning animation and turn up battle speed to slightly increase speed on top of the games speed boost.

Something I wish I had known before doing this...if you press RT during a battle, then it fights for you. So if you do the method with Steiner and the Blood Sword, you don't even need a turbo controller.

That's correct.

It's not that big of a deal though, as you can just make a new save, turn on the boosters and play the hour or so it takes to get to Ice Cavern if you go past the point of no return on your main save.

So, I'm looking to start this game thanks to GamePass (and I haven't played it since it first came out, which was a while ago, and I'm old) As I have a turbo controller handy, I want to clarify the Alexandria Castle gimmick. Is this accessible at any time in the game or only at a very specific point? (As I won't be changing disks since it's 2020, I won't know when Disc 2 starts or ends) And how feasible is it to have the blood sword prior to entering if it is "one-time only"?

By ShazamFTW on 26 May 2020 05:11
It's only accessible at a very specific point. Getting the Blood Sword beforehand is pretty straightforward, but it is missable. I'd recommend pulling up a guide for the coin locations so you don't miss them as you're playing through. :)

I turbo'ed my controller at the exit of the Evil Forest. 3-4 enemies every 20sec. That's 16h to get the achievement. Tomorrow when I wake up I should be half way done...

Update: When I woke up after 8h I was at 48%

@shareabletexas1 must be done on one save file as the game tracks kills on that save. Eg, a save will always have that many enemies killed regardless of how many times it's loaded. There is no system file save like in, for example, Type-0

I'm doing a modified version of Method 3. Thanks for linking the simple auto-key.

Started up a new game and quickly moved to the Escape from the Evil Forest. Auto-battle with immediate battle start at the doorway from the boss. Only need the "Enter" auto-keying and occasionally checking it for character HP (Backspace to pause and double-tap F2 to heal). Once you get to level 10+ you can leave it running for a few hours with no issue. Figure I'll have it done this weekend with not a lot of actual work from my end.

If you dont save after a grind session youll have to redo the kills, bit the achievement percentage will not go down, since this is not a cumulative achievement, the kills must be done in a single save file.

I autohotkey with a simple left and right command with a few A button imputs on an infinite loop.

Took my laptop 24 hours running straight to get the achievement

Got any tips for the endgame part as well? Just before you battle Kuja the last time. So far, my only options were above gizamaluke's grotto in the forests and inside grotto. But mostly, they show up in numbers of 1 or 2, sometimes a third enemy pops up.

So, what do you do when your trial of AutoKeyboard is run up because you accidentally opened and closed it to many times and now it won't let you use it without paying? Asking for me, because that's what happened.

I've been working on this in the NW continent (snow) using some of the tips here, cheats party set up etc. and I lifted elements from the scripts for the other achievements to make my own for this. The other methods for constantly spawning enemies didn't suit me as I couldn't see a away to save and didn't want to leave the PC running it as I need it for work.

Set up the game for autobattle etc run the script, press F9 in game to start it and F12 to stop it periodically and save. I'm sure there are tweeks that can be made to it. Basically it presses enter for after battles and the left arrow key to circle around the field. I was level 50 when I started and used as many defensive abilities as I could.

Also it's important that when resuming that you choose to load your most recent save and not continue as that loads your most recent field checkpoint in my experience and may not be as recent as your last save.

I found the best way to do this was, like the "Hail to the King" trophy, use Remote Play and a Auto Hot Key script and just leave the game running. This takes a long time to unlock but once everything's set up it's completely automated so you can just let it do its thing for 24~ hours. If you're starting from a new game, this will require a bit of prep work.

First of all, you want to get to the part where you play as Steiner and Marcus as you're escaping the Alexandrian dungeon (in what would have been Disc 2 on the original PS1 release). Along the way, collect all the Stellazzio coins and hand them over to the bird lady in Treno for the Bloodsword. After swinging left and right repeatedly and breaking out, navigate to the centre-left of the screen; you'll notice Alexandrian soldiers will endlessly run towards you from off-screen, initiating a battle against two upon contact. This is why we're attempting the trophy here, as we're consistently forced into battles. Equip the Bloodsword on Steiner, make sure the battles progress as fast as possible in the Config menu, press R2 in battle to start auto-battle, and pause the game and activate the speed and 9999 damage boosters. Do not activate the battle assistance booster - it forces a Trance animation to play at the beginning of every battle which considerably adds to the time - we gave Steiner the Bloodsword instead so he won't die (every enemy he hits, he will be healed for the same amount of damage). Marcus will die, but Steiner will be able to endlessly hold his own.

Unfortunately, even with auto-battle on, you'll quickly notice that you'll still need to confirm the results following each battle, so you can't just leave the game running. If you have a Turbo controller, you can set it to repeatedly press X, and that's it - you're done. Time to leave the game running and you can come back later. Otherwise, this is where Remote Play and Auto Hot Key are necessary.

So, download and install Remote Play and Auto Hot Key on your computer - they're both straightforward. Auto Hot Key will allow you use a script that makes your PS4 think you're repeatedly pressing X every second or so, and Remote Play makes that script viable since it runs on your computer, rather than on PS4. Now, open Notepad, copy and paste the following into it, and save it as an .ahk file on your desktop:

Loop
{
Send {enter down}
sleep 45
Send {enter up}
sleep 300
}
Open Remote Play, plug your PS4 controller into your computer via USB, then open the script you just saved to your desktop and click back on the Remote Play window. If you've done everything correctly, Steiner will constantly take out endlessly approaching Alexandrian soldiers without you having to do anything. The only problem here is that the script only works on the active window so you can't use your computer for anything else while this running, and obviously you can't use your PS4 either. This takes about 24 hours to do - Steiner was level 14 when I started and level 93 when I finished. Furthermore, you cannot save at any point during this method, so you really have to find some time to commit here.

I hope this was all understandable. Good luck!

Another way! Since Key presser is trial based, I decided to use Auto Hot key scripts and a rubber band instead. On to the steps!
Steps:
1. Download auto hot key. https://www.autohotkey.com/
2. Right click on desktop ----> New ----> AutoHotKey Script
3. Use this script to keep pressing X on the keyboard:
#Persistent
SetTimer, PressTheKey, 200
Return

PressTheKey:
Send, {X}
Return

4. Load up FF9. Travel between Dali and the Ice Caverns. Land. Turn on 9999 damage, High speed mode, and Battle Assistance if you are worried about dying.
5. Minimize FF9 to a smaller window.
6. Run the script.
7. Make sure its working by running around and get into a fight. If it works, rubberband your control to keep moving. Go to sleep. Enjoy that sweet progress each night until its done.

Thank you! I used your script and rubberbanded my controller. I also set all my characters to auto-regen and auto-haste.
After finishing my first playthrough, I used this method on the ice continent (NW). It took me almost 17 hours to get to 10.000 kills.

Thanks for the tip. AutoHotKey 2 has been released since this solution was originally posted, so I wrote a new script. It is designed to run around in a circle in map view while confirming constantly.

*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***

I changed all game options to the fastest settings, such as turning off battle animations. I used a late-game save and traveled to an area on the map (Pilkiras Island) where the enemies only use negative status effects that can be auto-blocked; such as by equipping the Antibody ability. I also equipped the Auto-Regen ability on all characters so they would constantly be healing. I enabled the fast forward and 9999 boosts, but not battle assistance because the Trance animation takes way too long. I then turned on the AHK script and let it run, turning it off to save occasionally and then letting run until the achievement popped. By my rough math, I was defeating about 500 enemies per hour.

Here is my method to do this trophy :
You can skip this explanation and go to summary.

This is a way to do it on xbox without a specific controller or downloaded mod, but time.
I use my phone's timer to record the number of monsters killed in 10 minutes.
The best ratio i did was in the ice plain near Gaza Est, where i was able to kill 106 in 10". It means it should takes you about 16 hours, but it's easy so you can watching something on phone at the same time. I choose this place because you can find 3/4 mantas, 2/3 vespas or 1/2 spiders. Mantas and spider got fast animations. This place will give you another trophy too for being level 99.
You can farm this after obtaining the boat, but i advise to do it when you will have the first "plane" created by Cid after saving his wife. At this time you should have auto-booster, auto-recover and others skill.
Of course it will be necessary to use the x3 option of the game to be able to kill them at this pace.
At this time i didn't find the strenght to kill my 4000 remaining mobs'

When do that ?
After getting the first plane.

Where do that ?
Ice plain near Gaza Est at north-west of the world map

What i need to do ?
Press cn_start and activate speed x3 and 9999damage.
Activate auto-booster and auto-recover on all your team.
Now move on the ice plain for 16hours :p Don't forget to press cn_A after battle if you Watch a movie ;)

During a normal play through of the game it is estimated you would only kill one to two thousand enemies, leaving quite a bit of grinding to complete this achievement. You can grind out the rest of this in a few ways.

1. Pay attention to the story and directly after the events in Cleyra and escaping the prison cage with Steiner and Marcus, leave the game running overnight/while at work with the 9999 Damage and High Speed boosters turned on, as well as activating auto-battle by hitting when inside a battle (it will persist to every battle after until you turn it off). You should also have the Blood Sword equipped on Steiner (a reward for turning in the zodiac coins in Treno - this is mentioned in the story walkthrough I linked in the Road Map). You will never die because of the life drain effect on the weapon (though poor Marcus will), and will get a few hundred kills per hour. If you don't have the weapon, turn on the Battle Assistance booster to keep him alive, though this will slow down the kills per hour due to the Trance animation in every battle.

This specific location is mentioned because the enemies will run at you, so you can leave your character idle and use either a turbo controller to make sure is always active on Xbox to skip the post-battle screens, or use an AutoHotKey script that presses the Enter key once every second on PC (see here for how to do that). The downside to this is that there is no way to save during this section, so if your game crashes you lose all the progress. It will also still take nearly 20-24 hours of time. However, you can let this run on your PC and play something else on your Xbox, so that's a plus. This will also put a dent into getting a character to Level 99.

2. Using a turbo controller or a script for AutoHotKey that will press the movement and action buttons for you, you can run in a circle on the world map and let the game run that way. Same premise though, throw on the boosters so you won't die.

3. Play legit. Obviously this will be the most tedious and take up hours and hours of your life. I'd suggest trying to work out one of the other two methods.

I just unlocked this achievement on Xbox so I want to share some insight about what I did hoping it will help you too.

I had to do a new save, and new gameplay, as I may have used a continue or mismatched my saves due to the fact that the Xbox tracking wasn't improving at all after hours of grinding.

On the new playthrough, I got up to the Dali hills and after the Ice Cavern. I know there are better places to farm, but I found this to be more reliable/safe.

I load up the game on PC using the PlayAnywhere (yes, you can install the game on PC without having to repurchase it, the saves cross between the Cloud and the Achievements too are shared). On PC I put my controller with a rubber band, then put the Speed and Damage boost. Zidane was running in a circle near a mountain but far from the Cavern and Dali. Then with an autokey app, I set up the keyboard to press the X button (which is the cn_A button on the controller) for 99999 cycles and tot seconds.

You will get from 1 to 3 enemies top, and a friendly one that you can easily remove by fulfilling his demands. Save often and DO NOT use continue. Load manually everytime. Take an eye on everyone health, at least at first. An easy way to avoid having to use items is to press pause before the fight is over, when all enemies are dead, and activate the Trance Booster then disactivate it. That will refill your hp, your mp, and your trance bar will not trigger any transformation since the battle is over.

It took me 22:46 hours, Garnet is level 33 now and I have over 1 million g. You can use this data to keep track of your progress.

Note that, if you too like me screwed your fist attempt and the Xbox is not tracking the achievement anymore, there may be a mismatch between the achievement tracking and the save registered kills. It means that, once your new save or playthrough gets more kills than what the achievement recorders first, it will get back on tracking and continue from there.

I know this may not be the best guide, but I hope it will save you time and sanity. I almost got my Dark Souls 3 all Achievement run completed while I was grinding this laugh

I would summarize the guide in just a few steps. Took 25 hours. 1 hour of active play, 24hour of idling.

1. Play the game from the start normal or fast forwarded. In fast forward it took me an hour to get to the right place
2. Make sure to pick up stellazio in the windmill in dali in the first floor behind the wall. You can come back to this later.
3. Make sure in Burmecia you pick up 1. stellazio behind the cart in beginning of burmecia.
4. Pick up 2 stellazio in Treno, 1. by throwing 130gil to the fountain in the entrance and 2. in the item shop behind the item shop.
Note: if you missed dali, you can go there now by going to the gate and switching the fork (go north instead of east)
5. Once you have 4 stellazio, go to that bird lady and give them all to her. the 4th reward is blood sword.
6. Now play further until you get to rose of may (ship with beatrix after cleyra), make a save and now starts the achievement.
7. You want to play on pc and download the autokeyboard https://www.murgee.com/auto-keyboard/
8. Make sure that the autokeyboard doesn't stop after 10 seconds and the hitting rate is 100-500ms. You want to hit enter.
9. Load up your save from rose of may and you should next control steiner and marcus. Move in the wrecking ball until you hit the right wall.
10. Go to the middle of this area, Make sure you have fast forward and 9999 boosters on. Also choose bloodsword to Steiner at this point if you didn't do it already.
11. Turn on the autokeyboard, make sure it's correctly set up and hits the enter button without stopping.
12. Wait for about 24,1 hours. (on average you will kill 2 soldiers each 17 seconds)

Note: Hope your internet connection is stable unless you own the game. Make sure computer doesn't go to sleep mode or anything like that

You should now get the achievement with this simple guide.

Unfortunately, this trophy is a significant grind because there are no shortcuts or an in-game counter to show how many enemies you have killed. Throughout an average playthrough of the game, you will kill anywhere between 1,000 and 2,000 enemies but this is dependant on how much you grind.

There are two ways of doing this, one involving significantly less effort than the other.

Using a Turbo Controller

The first method is to use a Turbo Controller and automate the process whilst leaving your PS4 running.

The best place to get this trophy is on Disc 2, when you escape from the birdcage with Steiner and Marcus. The reason for this is that this is one of the very few sections of the game where enemies will run to you on the field screen, negating the need for you to run around and get into random battles. Equip Steiner with the Blood Sword (obtained in Treno by exchanging four Stelazzio Coins with Queen Stella - see What's Your Sign? for details on where to find these) and activate the High Speed and 9,999 damage boosters. Don't use Battle Assistance as this will take a lot of extra time having to sit through the Trance animation during every fight and having the Blood Sword recover your health with every attack. Also, go to 'Config' and make sure Battle Speed is set as high as it will go and that ATB is set to Active.

With this method, you can kill two Alexandrian soldiers approximately every 15 seconds so 8 per minute and 480 per hour. Therefore, it will take 21 hours to kill 10,000 enemies (although slightly less as no doubt you will have killed a number of enemies to reach this point in the story). You also can't leave the screen to activate autosave and there's no Save Moogle, thus you will have to leave your PS4 running for this length of time.

This method is also recommended as you can manually track how many enemies you have killed. Firstly, unequip Steiner's 'Level Up' ability, then go to 'Status' in the menu and take a note of his total EXP. Each battle against the soldiers will give you 714 EXP, which is 357 EXP per enemy. Whenever you want to check your progress, go into 'Status' and take note of Steiner's total EXP. Now subtract the initial value you noted down, then divide that number by 357 and you will have the total number of kills since you started grinding.

Of course, with a turbo controller, you can farm anywhere on the world map by rubber banding the to run around and having turbo'd. However, your character might sometimes get stuck in the terrain and you will face many different enemy types, making the above tracking method impossible. Therefore, it is advised to do this with Steiner.

Without a Turbo Controller

The majority of gamers will not have a turbo controller or be willing to buy one for this trophy, therefore you will have to do it manually but the method remains very much the same. Run in circles with the , kill the enemies with Attack (or activate Auto-Battle with ) then press twice to skip the post-battle screen.

The best place to farm kills is Gizamaluke's Grotto, as that has the highest amount of enemy groups containing 3 or 4 enemies (although there are sometimes only 2) and they are very easy to kill. Also, the Lost Continent in the north-west of Gaia has a high frequency of 3-4 enemy groups.

You could also use the Steiner method mentioned earlier (and this way, you can still track kills reliably) but you will have to press twice at the end of every battle to continue.

The trophy is incredibly tedious and long. After beating the game you will have killed about 800-2000 mobs depending on how you played, but most likely you have killed very few mobs because... We completed the game with random battles disabled.
This “fascinating” grinding process can be automated through a remote play and script. It will take 20-24 hours to complete the missing kills.
How to do this is described in the text guide .

I found a place where farming kills is faster, it is in the Gizamaluka grotto, on the third screen (see photo). A big plus is that there is a battle with 4 opponents, very often with 3 and 2, and where would we be without a battle with 1 opponent. We turn on acceleration and auto-combat and run left and right along the bridge and engage in random battles. The best place I’ve seen in the whole game, I’ll finish these 20,000 here in 10-15 hours.

On the field next to Esto Gazo, 90% of the time you end up in a group of 3 or 4 monsters.

It is impossible to view the number of killed monsters in the game, but you can cheat the game a little and still keep track of the number of destroyed monsters when you start finishing off this trophy. This is exactly what I propose to do.

Most often, 2-4 monsters in battles are found in 2 places in the post-game:
- on the world map of the Lost Continent (snow continent);
- in the Gizamluk Grotto (the cave into which you found yourself almost immediately after your first visit to the Lindblum kingdom, and destroyed the large snake - the guardian of the Grotto).
We need the Gizamluk Grotto, the third screen from the entrance. Here, you still come across groups of 2-4 monsters more often than on the Lost Continent.
There are only 2 types of monsters here:
- dragonflies (22 exp);
- skeletons (26 exp).
Skeletons are found a little less often than dragonflies, so on average you will receive 23 exp per kill.

Now note how much exp any of your heroes have accumulated through the Status menu (for example, Zidane has 1,000,000 exp). Start killing monsters. At any time, check how much exp Zidane has accumulated since the last check (let's say 15,000 exp). Then 15,000 : 23 = 652 monsters.
The calculation is as accurate as possible and will allow you to track the number of monsters destroyed on the way to the trophy.
