How to unlock the Going for the Gold achievement in FINAL FANTASY IX - Definitive Guide

You will be able to catch frogs in Quina's mini game after he joins your party. This is technically missable as you don't have to go to Qu's Marsh or ever have Quina in your party.

After leaving Lindblum via the dragons gate, you will see some Chocobo tracks. Just beyond those is a swampy area. Enter that and you will be on a path with Moggster and Moggy on it. You know them from the tutorials. Take the path directly behind them. Go straight up and you will find Quina trying to catch frogs. I caught him a frog, so I will assume that you should do the same. Cross the bridge and head up. Head inside the building and speak to Quale. Quina joins your party and you can now play the frog hunting mini game.

Go back to the area with frogs, you should now see a golden frog amongst the others. Catching the frog is going to take some patience, but for me, it was the first frog I caught after the one for Quina. Wait in a zone i.e. either end of the bridge for the frogs to hop on dry land and quickly nip out and attempt to grab a frog by holding cn_B to sprint while tapping cn_A to catch your frog. Eventually, the golden frog will be yours.

Also, make sure you leave one male and one female from in the pond so that they reproduce faster while you're away. If you do not do this, the next time you return, there will only be 2 tadpoles in the pond. You will then need to wait for them to mature before they can mate. Leaving behind a male, female and a golden frog will help you with the catch 99 frogs achievement faster. Female frogs can be spotted by the black stripe on either side, male frogs do not have stripes.

So let me get this straight. If in a single save all the frogs are captured in Qu's marsh and leaving none free, does that mean the achievement becomes unobtainable and needs a new playthrough?

I've updated the solution to give clarification on this. If you capture all frogs in a Marsh, when you return, it will only have tadpoles in it. You will need to wait for them to mature and mate before you can catch more frogs. Leaving a male, a female and a golden frog accelerates spawning process.

Additionally, there are 4 Marsh locations. Will update the guide when I find them. It's been a while since I did the PS version

If you go into the Config menu and set the movement option to run, it changes the setting so your characters will always run and pressing the B button will cause them to walk. I find it much easier to catch frogs without having to hold B and tap A.

After you get Quina in your party, whenever you go to the pond in a Qu's Marsh (there are four in the world) s/he will ask to catch frogs (if in your current party). Randomly a Gold frog may spawn, catch it for this trophy.

N.B. The gold frog is known to improve frog re population in the marsh so it may be advisable to save, catch him, then reload.

The golden frog is a frog that randomly appears at any of the four Qu's Marshes around the world and catching it will earn you this trophy. It is not advised to catch golden frogs, however, because they speed up the frog respawning process so it might be a good idea to save your game, catch the golden frog then reload.

As mentioned above, the golden frog will spawn randomly in one of the four Qu's Marsh locations. Catching it slows down the frog regeneration, so either leave it alone and only catch it after earning "Frog Wrangler" or save before catching it and reload.
