How to unlock the Hail to the King achievement in FINAL FANTASY IX - Definitive Guide
It took 30 hours of practice and nearly broke my mind in the process but anyway this is how I did it and where it's located.
The jump rope mini game is located in the Alexandria square at the start of the game while playing as vivi (the little black mage) approach the 3 girls skipping to begin the mini game, the mini game relocates to the Bell tower on disc 3.
Controller plugged in
Head phones on and up loud enough to block out everything but the game sound
In game music off
Nodding to the beat like I'm listening to music I found it helped me stay in time
Then I just shut my eyes and tapped to the beat of the sound of vivi landing, opening your eyes every so often to see how many you're at and that you're ready for the next transition at 20 50 100 and the tap tap pause tap tap that begins at 200, even tho it says 200 your first double tap begins when the counter says 202 then there's the soul crushing transition back to rapid single taps at 300 then it stays like that all the way up to 1000 and beyond, I found the 202-300 the hardest part by far if you can get that down and fluke the transition at 300 you've pretty much got it. Once I made the transition at 300 I just shut my eyes and tapped to the beat as long as I could I found opening my eyes to see how close I was just played with my nerves and made me mess up especially if you look and it's a new high score.
Take alot of breaks because it's probably one of the most frustrating things you'll ever do in your life in a video game I know it was for me.
And just practice practice practice that 200-300 part is the test if you can get that you can do it.
And another thing stay positive progress is progress even if it's by a little, every time you hit that double tap section you get more practice at it.
The hardest part for me was opening my eyes to see how far off 300 I was I found the double tap part really hard with my eyes open if you don't that's half the Battle won right there.
Having your eyes closed past 300 does help the nerves at least it did for me but you never know how far away from 1000 you are, and will probably end up over shooting by a fair amount, I messed up at 1724 but better that than messing up at 990.
Also another way to do the double tap part as mentioned by XBOXOHOLIC:
Minor addition, but for the 200-300 tap tap pause part...
I tapped the jump button with my middle finger and tapped the pause on my desk with the pinky on the same hand and kept a regular rhythm that way.
And yet another way to do it contributed by MERLINATED:
I'd say that the pace for 100 goes up to 202 then you have to double tap a in a quick succession, which personally I thought was the hardest part, first time I got past the 300 transition I got 1000. I would also suggest not closing your eyes and just staring at Vivi's feet, i felt there was too much of a delay between me pressing A when hearing him jump, but whatever works for you.
If you vote negative please take the time to explain why so that I may improve it.
= I recommend using headphones and turning off the background music in the settings. You're going to listening to Vivi's footsteps. Going into Xbox Settings -> Display & Sound -> Audio output and mess around what you feel is best for you. I ended up with HDMI audio Stereo uncompressed, Optical audio off, Bitstream format off and Headset format Stereo uncompressed.
= Play on a lagless monitor/TV if possible, because you're going to want to reduce the lag as much as possible. This game originally was meant to be played on a lagless CRT, and I can only imagine it being slightly easier on oldschool equipment.
= In my attempts I tried using a Xbox, PS4, and Arcade Stick controller (MadCatz TE2). I thought that using an arcade stick would have the best results hitting a single button and most of my runs were using this, but it was not the controller I ended up completing the challenge on. I ended up doing it on a PS4 controller adapted with a Brooks Converter (shoutout to Brook's completely lagless controller adapter).
= Another tip to play around with, especially when learning, is Xbox's Magnification. Go into the Xbox's Settings -> Ease of Access -> Magnifier - > Magnifier on. This way you'll be able to zoom in and look at Vivi better. The only problem with this is your counter and the little girl's message will be cut-off because you're are too far zoomed in. I still used this for a while and felt it helped my learning.
= The Xbox's controllers are also completely configurable to be re-mapped, so if you need to change the A button to something else because the button has issues, change it to a better one. Alright, now I'm going to detail the different steps:
Jump Strats:
When you have Vivi in position ready for his first jump, the white exclamation mark will appear above his head. As soon as you hit the button he will automatically jump over the first rope. After this, you have to press the button via a timed input. From here on out, you're going to be learning. Pay attention to Vivi's feet and his shadow and listen to the clop of his jump. I believe by hearing AND seeing is the fastest way to learn because using all of your senses available to you, but do what works for you. I tended to look at the counter only when I was a few steps away from transitioning the next interval. The little girl will give you a visual and jump up as the transition hits. Mentally counting patterns are going to vary uniquely to every individual, but if it helps, do it. Simply counting 1-2-3, or 1-2-3-4, 1-2, or something like dum dum, dee dee may help. If you already have a beat that you recognize from music, use that. One of the amazing things about this challenge will be seeing the growth of your timing skill develop before your eyes. This may take a couple of days, but practice before bed and get a good nights rest. The next day you will be amazed on how much better you are.
1 - 20: These steps are slow and easy. If they're hard, they soon won't be because you're going to get a lot of practice.
21 - 50: These step reminded me of the beat of a Psychostick song (The Root of All Evil), and I thought it helped.
51 - 100: I used 1-2-3 here.
101 - 200: These are slightly faster than the beats before, but there is a difference. I actually didn't notice it at first. This will be your longest set without transition thus far, so you might want to experiment with just closing your eyes after holding the pattern for a while on some attempts.
201 - 300: This will by far be the most challenging of the entire Achievement. If you can get passed this, your chances of riding all the way through should be very high. These are double taps and they are completely unique from all the other beats. One of the most difficult things about this challenge is you don't get to practice anything individually. So go on Youtube and watch someone complete this part of the challenge. Get a feel for the sound and practice the transition on the keyboard. As soon as you see "200" on the counter, start with the next pattern transition of XX XX XX XX taps maybe counting 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 mentally. I failed SOOO many times at the 200 and 202 mark just trying to nail this part that everything before this became incredibly easy to me. I would successfully get to 200 virtually every time, but nailing the double jump pattern took time, so dig deep and don't feel down. What made it even harder is once I started getting the hang of it passed 200 I would get too excited or stressed out that I could feel the blood draining out of nervousness so I would fail in the mid 200s.
301 - 1000: These are the fastest jumps, but don't feel intimidated. They are like 101-200, but a little faster. At this point I got the pattern for about 10 steps and tried to mentally focus myself to remember the movements while I took my eyes off the TV and focused on my controller for the rest of the challenge and didn't look back. I held my focus so tightly my pupils shrank and things got darker with tunnel vision, but I was alright. So much time would pass that I felt like I got sent to the shadow realm or something. I wouldn't dare look up for all eternity. My sister eventually walked by and told me my number at 1400. At this time I was in sheer jubilation while continuing my tapping. I decided to keep going while mentally celebrating. I stopped at 1717 with 5 viewers on Twitch. This will be a number I remember forever.
1) Install PS Remote Play & Configure your PS4/5: https://remoteplay.dl.playstation.net/remoteplay/lang/en/ind...
2) Download & Install AutoHotKey: https://www.autohotkey.com/
3) Download & Install SciTE4AutoHotKey: https://www.autohotkey.com/scite4ahk/
4) Download the script (courtesy of Septomor): https://github.com/septomor/FF9-Jump-Rope-Script
5) Connect your laptop/PC to the same network as your PlayStation. It really helps to have both using a wired connection to reduce lag.
6) Connect to your PlayStation using Remote Play, start FF9 and have Vivi standing ready to jump with the "0 jumps" prompt displayed on the screen.
7) Run SciTE4AutoHotKey as an adminstrator and open the Jump.ahk script. This may sound risky, but the script looks pretty safe to me and the auto-adjustments it makes when the jumping fails won't work without admin rights for some reason.
8) Click the play button in the SciTE4AutoHotKey menu bar to start the script. This will pop-up a little window with some options. Choose Septomor's script and click the Start button.
9) Sit back and watch. Hopefully it will only take a few tries for the script to auto-correct itself enough to get through 1000 jumps. Again, this is going to be highly dependent on the stability of your network connection, so if you have a crappy LAN at home, this might take a few tries and some luck.
If I decide to go for the trophy, this is definitely how I’m going to do it.
Okay, now that that is cleared up, here's how you're going to TRY. First, throw your controller away. You're going with the mouse. The reason for this is that if you click at the wrong time with the controller, your jump will fail. With the mouse, you can click as often as you like. Make sure to click within the speech bubbles. The safest way to make sure this happens is (if you're skipping in the clock tower on Disc 4, which I'd advise) to place the tip of the cursor on the rung 3rd from the bottom in the bell tower.
Okay, so you're set up. The first 200 jumps should be fairly easy. After 300, you'll find yourself checking the jump score more often. Try not to do this, as it'll wear you down mentally. The pain in your finger will begin to become more frustrating. You CAN move your forearm for comfort and to help with blood flow, but do NOT move your wrist. Raise and lower your elbow as required. After 500 the constant clicking should be easier, as muscle memory and numbness takes over. It's now a case of mental fortitude. As the numbness sets in, you need to be more aware of your clicking. Don't let the cursor slip too far, don't let your rhythm become upset. You'll probably find your hand getting quite sweaty around 700. Raise your elbow to help ease your hand back to a comfortable position on the mouse. Consider switching your fingers position from flat along the buttons to hooked, pointing more downward. When you get to 900, remember you only have 100 to go. Think about what achievement your going to try for next. Have you managed Excalibur II yet? How many bodies have you managed to make hit the floor? You know a Clean Bill of Health is actually quite easy. Oh look, you're at 1032 jumps.
Or you can try use an auto-clicker, but you'll feel your self-respect gushing out of yourself if you take that route, and most of the time they don't work anyway.
This mini-game can be found directly in the beginning of the game as you control Vivi in Alexandria, and again late in Disc 3. You have three options in obtaining this achievement.
1. Legit: You will need to simply play the mini-game. It is comprised of simply pressing on Xbox or the Enter key on PC at the correct times. The jumping changes speeds at 20, 50, 100, 202, and 300 on the jump counter. The grouping from 202-300 is the most difficult as it is not a consistent speed the entire time, but rather a jump-jump-pause type of cadence. This will take a lot of practice to perfect, and considering the 1000 jumps takes a good seven minutes to complete, you'll need to have good eye and hand endurance as well. Most people do this method by sound and only open their eyes to see when the speed changes are coming.
2. AutoHotKey Script: Playing on PC, there is a script that you can edit to fit your specific setup that will do the jump rope mini-game for you. Now, it's a bit difficult to setup (I'll be honest, I tried for multiple hours to tinker with it and completely failed) but there are many others who had success. If you want to give this method a try, read this thread for instructions and scripts to try, as well as how to edit it.
3. Frame Rate Control: This is the method I used and also requires playing on PC. Download a program such as RivaTuner Statistics Server and set it to cap your computer's Frames Per Second down to a very low number with the Application Detection on High. Have this setup prior to opening the game or it may not detect the game. I personally used 8FPS, but I likely should have gone to 10 or 12. Doing this will slow the game down and give you plenty of time to react to the jumps. Use Vivi's feet as a marker and press the Enter key to jump every time his feet begin to swing forward. I thought of it more as me shoving him back to the ground rather than actually initiating the next jump. You'll need a good 25-30 minutes set aside for this method since the game is slowed down so much, but it's nearly failproof.
When done legitimately, this is by far the hardest trophy in the game and likely the one that will prevent you from getting the Platinum until you master the art of jumping. Jump rope is available on two different occasions throughout the game; in Alexandria's Town Square at the start of Disc 1 when you are playing as Vivi and in the Steeple much later during Disc 3 onwards.
To take part in the mini-game, talk to the girl jumping in the centre of the rope and Vivi will take over. You have to press or to jump every time the ! field icon appears. It starts off slowly but it speeds up incrementally after 20 jumps, then 50 jumps, then 100 jumps, switching to a double-jumping pattern at 200 jumps, before reverting back to the fast constant jumps from 300 onwards.
In total, it takes approximately seven-and-a-half minutes of constant jumping until you reach 1000 jumps without missing a beat.
Luckily there is another, more technical way of obtaining this trophy but both are presented below.
Traditional method
This method is the standard way, as it was meant to be. The most important element is practice and likely many hours of it. No one single method works for everybody but there are a few things you can try to potentially make this less troublesome:
- If you have one of the 'new spec' DualShock 4 controllers (the ones with the Lightbar on the Touchpad), you can go to Settings => Devices => Controllers => Input Mode => USB and plug the controller into your PS4 to reduce any potential lag or latency issues with the standard Bluetooth connection. The difference might be incredibly minor but with the jumps having to be so precise, it could be the difference between staying in sync and not.
- Sound is much more of a reliable indicator than visuals. Once the jumps get past 50, it’s almost impossible to follow the ! icon and an ill-timed blink could see you mess up. Therefore, go to 'Config' and turn Sound off and turn Sound Effects up to maximum. If you have the 3.5mm headset that came with the PS4, plug that into your controller so you have the footsteps in your ear to aid you with your timing.
- Following on from the above, it is recommended to close your eyes completely and tap with the sound of the footsteps rather than be distracted by everything happening on the screen.
- It may be easier to do this in the Steeple from Disc 3 onwards. In this location, Vivi is front and centre of the screen rather than the camera being positioned isometrically above him. If you prefer to do this with your eyes open, it's easier to see when to jump from this camera angle.
The above is only a rough guideline and different methods will work for different people. Personally, I learned to count along in my head in increments of 5 so I knew when the next change was. After 12 hours of failing in the early-to-mid 200 range in the Town Square, I swapped to the Steeple location and got the trophy within 90 minutes. I found this location was much easier for me to get the double-jumping pattern right, as I used Vivi’s feet landing on the ground as an indicator. Between 1-200 I had my eyes closed, going purely by the sound in my ear, then opened my eyes for 200-300, then closed them again for 300-1,000.
The video below shows my completed run of this trophy (I ended up going past 1,000 by some distance as I had my eyes closed and dared not to open them until I was sure I’d got past 1,000). If it helps, practice tapping along to the beat to try and get the metronomic rhythm down, particularly from around the 180-320 range so you learn those tricky transitions:
Remote Play method
You can also obtain this trophy with the help of Remote Play on your PC and the AutoHotKey program. With the help of a script and the AutoHotKey program, you can have Vivi automatically jump more than 1000 times with no input from you at all and easily obtain this trophy.
To do this, you must use Septomor's AutoHotKey script. He gives a step-by-step guide of what programs to install and how to set up the script and get it running here. If you prefer a visual demonstration, Klair88 has created a video demonstrating the steps you need to take to get this script up and running:
This trophy has an prohibitive level of difficulty if you try to get it in the standard way, but those who are not tormented by moral principles and save their nerves and time can use the method through Remote Play and the AutoHotkey script.
You will need a PC with Windows 8 or 10. The PC and PS4 must be connected to the router via wire because... WiFi does not provide a stable enough connection.
A detailed description of the method is at this link.
- Go to the menu , then “Config” and turn off “Sounds”. Leave "Sounds effects" On . This will turn off the music. The music has its own rhythm, which is distracting. And now you can clearly hear Vivi’s Stomp . The stomp will be your rhythm. Click on along with stomping;
- Ignore the exclamation mark. The eye blurs. After 100 jumps, the exclamation mark appears briefly. Distracts.
- Pay attention to Vivi's Legs . The developers did the right thing. Vivi's feet show you how your finger should move. Synchronize Vivi's Legs and your Finger. The legs dropped - at the same speed the finger dropped and pressed , the legs jumped - and the finger rose up with them;
- The most difficult transition is from 199 to 200 jumps. Many people write that the rhythm slows down by 200. No. The rhythm becomes different. If up to 200 the rhythm was the same, then after 200 it’s like a train - knock-knock, pause, knock-knock.
- Before you sit down at the Playstation, play jump rope on your computer using an emulator. The emulator allows you to save the game at any time. Save between transitions from 195 jumps to 200 and from 295 to 300. Practice the moment of changing the rhythm of the jump rope and return to the Playstation.
- Take a break. The more time without a break, the worse the result. I recommend taking a break after 15-20 attempts. Eyes become blurry, focus drops without interruption.
Believe me, it is not as difficult as they describe. But don’t think that the trophy is completed in one evening. For some it may take a week, for others more. Until muscle memory remembers.
