How to unlock the Mister Nice Guy achievement in FINAL FANTASY IX - Definitive Guide
At various locations on the World Map, you may enter random battles where the normal battle music is replaced by cute background music. In these contests, your adversaries will not attack; instead, they beg you to give them a specific jewel.
If you give them the jewel, your party will receive a significant amount of AP (between 10 and 50) and sometimes a useful item. If you are cruel enough to attack them, they will run away, but they cannot be killed.
Once you have satisfied a monster's wishes, that particular monster will never appear again.
Once you have fed the correct item to the friendly monster, it will tell you the name of the next friendly monster you should visit unless you have stumbled across the latter while exploring the world map, in which case you will not receive any information.
Also, you will not be notified of any friendly monsters that should have been encountered previously.
You should not be unduly worried about the order as this does not affect the outcome of the event. There is a total of nine phantom monsters.
The only catch is that some of the monsters are in dangerous, out-of-the-way locations. For example, you can only find the Purple Jabberwock in a forest on the west continent, which requires the Invincible airship of the red chocobo to reach. Similarly, the Friendly Yan's evil lookalikes on Vile Island are, in fact, some of the toughest enemies in the game, and may wipe out your party!
Only when you have met all eight phantoms can you satisfy the Friendly Yan on Vile Island. You can still encounter him, but he will flee if you have not completed the others first. Once you have given the Friendly Yan a diamond, not only will you get 50 AP and a useful item, you will also get the favours described:
- You can do physical attacks on Ozma, the super boss in Chocobo Air Garden.
- Ozma's "Absorbs Shadow damage" will become "Weak against Shadow damage."
THE FAKER
There's also another monster named Gimme Cat that asks for a Diamond, but he is a rogue, so do not be deceived by him!

If you get attacked by Yans while searching for the Friendly Yan, summon Odin and cast Death on them every round. Also, try to perform the ReflectX2 trick with Vivi, and have everyone else perform their most powerful skill.
If Quina manages to eat one of these enemies, he/she can learn the Auto-Life ability. Yans have around 20,000 HP, making them tough to dispose of quickly. However, each set of three is worth 28,000 EXP and 3APM, which makes levelling up and learning abilities much easier.
There are a total of 9 friendly enemies in the game. You will know you've encountered a friendly monster, because the battle music will have a more peaceful tone compared to the normal battle music and the enemy will have a different color palette than normal. They will ask for jewels and will reward your party with a large amount of AP. Most of the enemies are encountered in forests.
Friendly monsters do not need to be encountered in any particular order but it is a good idea to encounter them in the order they appear as you play through the game. There is no way to track which enemies you have encountered or not in game. It is a good idea to write down what friendly monsters you have encountered so far (name appears when you target them) as you can easily miss one and not remember which one was missed (this happened to me).
The friendly enemies that you can encounter in the game are as follows:
Friendly Mu: Located in the Nolrich Heights between the Ice Cavern and Dali. Requests one Ore.
Friendly Ghost: Located in Bentini Heights near Treno. Requests one Ore.
Friendly Ladybird: Located in the Magdelene Forest between Conde Petie and Black Mage Village. Requests two Ores.
Friendly Yeti: Located in the forest in Lucid Plains outside of Madain Sari.
Requests two Ores.
Friendly Nymph: Located in the Pualei Plains outside of the Iifa Tree. Requests three Ores.
Friendly Jabberwock: Located in a small forest in the Seaway Canyon, near Oeilvert. Requests an Emerald.
Friendly Feather Circle: Located in the Mitmakis Ice Field on the Lost Continent. Requests a Moonstone.
Friendly Garuda: Located in the Popos Heights outside of Gizamaluke's Grotto. Requests a Lapis Lazuli.
Friendly Yan: Located in the forest on Vile Island, South-West of the Iifa Tree. Requests a Diamond. You must have satisfied every other friendly enemy’s request first before being able to give the friendly Yan a Diamond. If you have not completed the other friendly enemies requests the Yan will simply run away.
Beware that there are only three Emeralds, four Moonstones and four Diamonds in the game. If you sell or synthesize all of these jewels before giving them to the appropriate friendly enemy, you will be unable to fulfill their requests and miss out on this trophy. If this happens you will have to start an entirely new playthrough or go back to a previous save.
Once you have satisfied the friendly Yan's request, the trophy will pop.

There are nine total friendly enemies to encounter in the game, and each of them will be random encounters in specific locations. When found, they will ask for an item (some type of precious metal) and you must use the item on them from your inventory to complete their request and end the battle. If you don't have it, attack them (they will run away) or flee. You can encounter them more than once, so be sure to avoid giving the same friendly enemy an item twice or you risk voiding the achievement as there are only a specific number of Emerald, Diamond, and Moonstone items in the game.
For a full list of the friendly enemies, their locations, and the items they ask for, check this post on PST. The first time you can encounter them will be noted in the missable walkthrough as well. Again, don't use any of the precious metals more than once, or for anything else like synthesis.
I always met this little animal in the forest near the Iifa tree (to the right of the exit from the Madein Sari pass)
PS For some unknown reason, Ian ran away even after meeting all the other monsters along the way. It’s good that there was a save after the speedrun - everything went smoothly there. Those. It’s better to leave the quest untouched until you can meet everyone in order in one go.
