How to unlock the Tonberry achievement in FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered - Definitive Guide

####reports of achievements not unlocking. Save your game first before attempting to meet the criteria and please comment before continuing and please comment before voting negative if it struggles to unlock####

Grindy but achievable.

When you first enter the centra ruins you will need to complete odin quest (find and defeat this secret summon). It is worth noting that if you do not do so and the 20 min counter hits zero he will not be acquirable however, if you find him and the counter hits zero in battle he will kill you resulting in game over.

(Update, thanks to Fooga) You can enter the area, and when the count down timer decreases, you can enter the ruins again to reset this 20 min timer.

His quest can be found here.

When you have done this you must simply encounter and kill 20 tonberrys in this area, upon killing the 20th the Tonberry King will appear. When killing this giant mofo, he will join you on your quest.

**update 4/9/19**
This glitches and didn’t pop. Remember to save your game when you have defeated the 19th Tonberry

Tip: When grinding regular Tonberrys, let him take two steps forward before attacking. He shouldn't counter with grudge after that speeding up the grinding process a ton

Thanks, Fooga, for clarifying the 20min timer. I assumed as much, but wasn't certain.

micro missiles blue magic attack for Quistis makes the tonberry a cake walk. Easily 8000+ damage for the first hit, 4000+ on the second and so forth.

So the biggest question for me was does leaving the dungeon reset the Tonberry kill counter. I can confirm that it does not. So if it's taking too long, feel free to leave, save, do other stuff, then return.

^ Thanks for the tip. I never got killed after I waited for them to walk 2 steps.

Also, since this guide or the walkthrough doesn’t mention this, you can leave the area and reenter to reset the 20 minute timer. You can then continue to work towards 20 tonberry kills.

When I fought the Tonberrys my Squall was level 38 with Quistis and Selphie with me in the mid 20s.

I had just finished the Shumi Villiage sidequest and spent the time to draw out a significant amount of Ultimas from the draw point there. I had Ultima junctioned to Squall's STR. I also had his Cutting Trigger gunblade.

I am not sure how much of this is level, or junction, or weapon, but each attack with Squall would do 3000 damage to a Tonberry. What I then did was have Squall at low HP and switch between characters in battle until he got his limit break. One full limit break would kill a Tonberry, so they were no problem.

Once I got to the Tonberry King I did the same thing. You don't want to heal you characters because you want to do the limit breaks each time. I did spent some time trying to get Selphie's The End to come out, but I was never that lucky. If a character died I would Phoenix down or cast Life and kept doing Squall's limit break until the Tonberry dropped.

The Tonberry GF is obtained in the Centra Ruins area. This is annoying to accomplish because you first have to defeat 20 regular Tonberry enemies before the Tonberry King attacks you, and there is a 20-minute timer going in this area. Simply leave and return to reset the timer, and your count toward the 20 kills will not be reset.

Tonberry enemies have a move called Everyone’s Grudge which does 20x the number of enemies that party member has killed. This shouldn't hurt anyone but Squall too badly. However, if you let them take two steps forward before attacking, they will not counter with this move. Defeat 20 regular enemies and the king will show up in the same battle where you kill the 20th. His attack pattern is the same as the basic enemies. Defeat him to unlock the achievement.

Receive it after fighting Tonberry King in Centra Ruins. In order for the king to appear, you need to kill approximately 20-25 Tonberries. The fight with the king (a large amount of HP) is relatively difficult (you leave one character to heal the others, hit the other two with limits), you can call Diablo.

Very nasty creatures, because... The damage of their attack to the character depends on how many enemies the character killed. They can also do one-shots.

In my distant youth, I used Kamikaze Diablos to easily kill Tonberry, maybe the info will be useful to someone)
