How to unlock the FFX: Chocobo Rider achievement in FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster - Definitive Guide
Hello all, thought I would try my hand at helping people to get this done. FYI, this achievement can be very frustrating because it involves a fair amount of lucky RNG as well as skill so with that being said hopefully I can offer a few tips to make it a little easier.
-
1) First off, you must progress through all of the chocobo training in the calm lands until you get to the catcher chocobo option. This is the one you must pick. Essentially, you have to race the chocobo trainer to the calm lands exit. To beat this race, all you have to do is have a faster time than her, however to get a time of 0.0.0 it is a little more complicated.
2) There will be balloons in your path. Each one you collect will shave three seconds off your final time. There will also be these rubbish birds that will try and fly into you. Each one that hits you adds three seconds to your final time. You have to amass as many balloons as you can while avoiding birds to get this done.
3) So remember when i mentioned RNG in the beginning? Well, the balloons have different combinations of where they will appear on the battlefield each time you race. If possible, at the start of the race the best setup to put you in the best position to win is a line of 3 or 4 balloons all on the RIGHT side. If you can grab all of those before you pass the corner that will put you in the best position to get the time.
4) IMPORTANT NOTE! - It is more important to dodge birds then to collect the balloons. If you going for a balloon is going to cause you to get hit by a bird DO NOT DO IT.
5) I believe the lowest amount of balloons you can get to get this is 12, but you cannot get hit by any birds and you have to take a very short route. Odds are, that will be too difficult for most. Focus on practicing and going through and dodging the birds. That is the most important thing. Eventually, the RNG gods will bless you with a good balloon setup. I won this with a total of 14 balloons and 1 bird. Good luck, and try not to get frustrated if you can't do it. Go take a break if you feel yourself getting angry and come back!

Finally got this... Here's some tips I have for anyone struggling.
1) Try to chill out. This mini game is very poorly designed, clunky, and completely unfair. Getting mad will only make you perform worse and worse with each try. I got 0:0.1 on one attempt and took this as a sign that I would get it eventually because I was so close. It took so much energy not to rage at this lol.
2) To control the chocobo, only use left and right on either the D-pad or the left stick. I ended up using the left stick. Only use the left and right inputs and do not press forward or diagonally on the stick. It will make you lose control of the Chocobo. Do not hold left or right on the stick. Lightly tap left or right to line yourself up with the balloon you are going for.
3) Learn to master the beginning segment. You are better off if the balloons spawn on the right. Go straight at the balloons and try to turn as little as possible. This will put you ahead of the trainer and set you up for the rest of the race. Since there are no birds here, you want to. maximize the amount of balloons you get on this first segment. When you get to the turn, the game will automatically turn the chocobo to the right. If you steer too much to the right, you will lose control or you will get stuck on the corner. Try to get the balloon on the turn if you can.
4) Second segment - Dodge the birds at all costs. Ideally you don't want to get hit at all but sometimes this is nearly impossible. When you see the birds spawn, immediately turn as sharp as possible and try to aim at a balloon while doing so. Zig-zagging is a good way to dodge the birds and stay on a relatively straight path. This will help you get balloons and get to the finish relatively quickly. The faster you get to the finish, the less balloons you need. As you near the end of this segment, you will get close to the area where the birds spawn. Use sharp turns here to avoid the birds (impossible to avoid sometimes). Again, you will be automatically turned to the left at the end of this segment so try not to lose control of the chocobo here (similar to the end of the first segment).
5) This is the hardest segment imo. The path seems narrower here and the birds fly directly at you. Zig-zag if you can and try to get as many balloons as possible. Watch the spawn at the end as the birds can stun lock you at the finish line. I did a sharp turn to the left as I neared the finish to avoid the birds.
6) Use the trainer to your advantage. STAY AWAY FROM HER. If she is clearly going for a balloon, just let her have it. If you are too close and a bird hits her, it will also hit you at the same time.... If she is ahead of you, use her as shield but again do not get too close. I found that staying far away from her was best because it spreads the birds out.
7) Get good RNG. Unfortunately, this achievement has a massive luck factor. Just keep trying and you should eventually get it.
Good Luck!

After reading all of the above solutions and watching all the videos YouTube has on offer, I very nearly walked away from this achievement. It took 4 days of practice.
The steering is awkward and the chocobo fights to walk where it wants on the whole race. This means if you take too long to decide were you going, the chocobo will start to wander.
You must use the d pad. Try just to click press to do minor adjustments to the chocobos movement, and hold press to get out of the way of the birds.
A five balloon start is helpful, but in the end I amazingly managed with just a 3 balloon start and a final score of 14 balloons and 1 bird.
Final advice. Do not count your balloons as you go along. You'll only frustrate yourself. Just try and zone out. If you hit more then 2 birds just put the controller down and let the chocobo finish the course and try again, or continue as a practice run.
It's more important to miss the birds then it is to get the balloons
