How to unlock the Beast Tamer achievement in FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 - Definitive Guide
Get the Don Tonberry's crystal.
He appears as a rare spawn in Bresha Ruins-AF100-.
It is not a 100% drop, however. You can turn on the fragment skill "Battlemania" (Attracts tougher enemies) which you obtain from getting all of the maps 100% explored for the Acadamia-400 AF- fragment "Academic Rank: Paradox Professor," and then going to the fragment lady in Serendipidy.
If you are fully developed, then you should be able to kill Don Tonberry in one stagger.
This achievement is awarded for capturing the monster crystal of a Don Tonberry, found in the Bresha Ruins 100AF.
Two fragment skills will aid you immensely with this undertaking. The Battlemania skill increases the spawn rate of rare monsters. This is awarded for completing the Academia Rank: Paradox Professor fragment in Academia 400AF and getting 100% completion on all location maps. The Monster Collector skill is equally as important, as it increases your base chance of obtaining a monster crystal by 20%. This is awarded for collecting all fragments in the Vile Peaks, both 10AF and 200AF. It is very possible to do this without these bonuses, it just takes a little more luck and patience. Below I have a strategy for both low level and maxed out parties.
Monster Stats:
Don Tonberry
HP: 393,939 STR: 1,515 MAG: 1,515
Halves both physical and magical damage
Resistant to all statues ailments
LOW LEVEL STRATEGY
Paradigm Pack:
When I originally did this at a very low level, I had the following Paradigm Pack: Dragoon lvl 20 (COM) Yakshini lvl 50 (SYN) Flanitor lvl 30. It is best to have a synergist that doesn't have protect, shell, or even veil. You want power in this battle and bravega is ultimately important. It is possible to do this with much lower level monsters.
Party Paradigms:
SERAH NOEL MONSTER
Delta Attack RAV SEN COM
Delta Attack RAV SEN COM
Riot Shield RAV SEN SYN
Solidarity MED SEN COM
Combat Clinic MED SEN MED
Consolidation SEN SEN MED
Strategy:
Don Tonberry goes through two attack cycles. The slightly deadly knife attack through the end of the first stagger, followed by the very deadly bloody knife attack through the end of the second stagger. You should be able to kill it before it finishes its second stagger with this method.
Start in The first Delta attack and with a pre-emptive strike, use one attack phase to raise the chain gauge a bit. Then switch to Riot shield and allow Yakshini to cast bravery and faith on your party. If Noel or anyone else needs healing, switch to solidarity, otherwise go back to Delta attack and stagger Don Tonberry. Use the ATB recharge trick whilst switching between your two Delta attack paradigms and employ Serah's Ultimate Arrow attack. Near the end of his stagger, Don Tonberry will use Deep Seated Grudge, damaging all party members and clearing his chain gauge, so switch to consolidation when you see this coming. Heal up and prepare for phase two.
Start raising the chain gauge again, Don Tonberry should be focused on Noel, so heal with solidarity when necessary, thereby not dropping the chain gauge. when Don Tonberry is near his stagger threshold, switch to Riot Shield and allow Yakshini to re apply buffs. Then stagger with Delta attack and finish him off with ATB refresh. If he isn't dead, start from the beginning and make sure to employ a wound potion as Noels max health is probably getting low.
HIGH LEVEL STRATEGY
Paradigm Pack:
Much more offensive. I use Lightning lvl 13/Blue Chocobo lvl 99 (RAV), Gold Chocobo lvl 45/Twilight Odin lvl 99 (COM) and Purple Chocobo lvl 99 (SYN, no Protect or Shell, direct to Bravega/Faithga). I use Lightning/Twilight Odin when I'm doing Gil Farming as Lightning has Gill Finder II.
Party Paradigms:
SERAH NOEL MONSTER
Delta Attack RAV SEN COM
Strategic Warfare COM SEN SYN
Discretion MED MED COM
Tri-Disaster RAV RAV RAV
Aggression COM COM RAV
Aggression COM COM RAV
Strategy:
You should be able to kill Don Tonberry within the first stagger.
Once again get a preemptive strike and attack one round with Delta Attack to raise the chain gauge. Now go into Strategic Warfare and after two rounds brave and faith should be on everyone. I use Serah as a Commando here because I don't want to stagger too quickly due to Deep Seated Grudge. As soon as buffs are in place, go into discretion and remove poison from everyone, and heal up to 100%.
Now it's stagger time. Tri-Disaster will stagger in one round, then immediately into aggression for an assault. Now use ATB refresh to finish him off. If you take time to heal, he'll likely use Deep Seated Grudge and you'll be forced to start again. I've had Serah die a few times and still managed to take him out before the first stagger, so I recommend just pushing it out.
I've tested this technique and found it works in the first stagger around 90% of the time with practice. I tried two Cerberus paradigms in place of Aggression with an uber Twilight Odin and my success rate dropped to around 45%. I believe this to be due to the Chain Gauge not being raised continually.
Also, there is strong evidence that using a Feral Link Ability to finish off the Don Tonberry can increase your chances of getting a monster crystal, so you may work this in to your strategy if you wish. I've seen that the % you get on the ability will affect the chance boost of the crystal drop, therefore Twilight Odin would be the best to use as a finisher. Thanks to stefb42 for this information.
Best of Luck!
First thing's first, the location of this monster is in Bresha Ruins 100 AF, in order to unlock Bresha Ruins 100 AF, you have to go to "The Dying World" and unlock the optional gate there with a Wild Artefact. Once you're in Bresha Ruins 100 AF, you'll spawn where Atlas was in the regular Bresha Ruins in the beginning of the game, simply walk forward from this area until you get close to the point of an open walkway to the left, and a gate leading into the tunnel on the right, when looking at these, to the wall on the right, at the back of it is a piece of rubble. This little area here is where he will spawn.
To spawn a rare monster, you simply just keep making battles happen until they appear, a rare monster will appear outside of battle as a sort of paradox that you can initiate battle with. So you will know when you come across it. Take note that you can go into the Main Menu (Triangle) and go onto Settings and change the battle difficulty to Easy if you want to make the rare monster battle easier on you.
Now you know how to/where to get the Rare Monster, which is a "Tonberry" (you'll remember them if you played FF13), keep defeating him over and over until you're able to obtain his monster crystal to make him your own, it took me a few hours to get him, and on my 4th victory against him I looted the crystal.
If you're having trouble with the battle yourself, here's the tactic I used: -
This achievement requires you to collect the Monster Crystal of Don Tonberry. He can only be found in Bresha Ruins 100AF, which is unlocked via the blue gate in A Dying World 700AF (requires a Wild Artefact to open). You can increase the chance of running into him with the "Battle Mania" Fragment Skill, which is unlocked by completing the "Academic Rank: Paradox Professor" quest in City of Academia 400AF (100% Map Data). You'll know you've found him if you see a big ball of lightning (see video below).
To increase the chance of actually capturing him (+20%), you'll want to have the "Monster Collector" Fragment Skill, which is unlocked by collecting all the fragments in Vile Peaks 010AF/200 AF. You can also attempt to defeat him with a Feral Link skill which increases your odds. May need a few tries to actually capture him, people usually report 10-15 attempts.
