Not all carp counts as carp. For example, Prussian Carp is, strangely, not carp as it counts toward this achievement.

However, Smallmouth Buffalo does count. Better, there's a reliable spot in Texas where you can get bites. This same spot is also good for farming catfish with the exact same setup. Note that you catch a lot more catfish and sunfish at this location, but this is a decent location at the free Lone Star Lake.

Go to Home Sweet Home at Lone Star, and aim across to the right edge of the break in the trees on the far side. You need to cast between 60-70 feet (less than 60 is very quiet), and I use a 50" leader.

My personal setup is a Caesar 23' telescopic rod, which is fantastic for getting fish out of the water. I use mono .009" line, a slim bobber, a #6 hook, and pet food. Since you're in Texas, you can leave at any time, sell your catch and come back at no cost. You will likely pull some Redear and Crappie from the same place, but a majority of the bites will be Buffalo or Channel Catfish.
