The key to making this quick and painless is to cover the spawners with units to prevent enemy reinforcements.
I used Captain Thistle for his Plow Ahead card which provides +1 speed which affect all subsequent Move cards applied to the unit in the current turn. Make sure to boost his damage with Thorns as you need 5 damage to kill the tougher enemy.
My other unit was Barrel Cactus which provides a +3 healing card which you can use in case you take too much damage on the Captain. He is also quite tanky himself with 7 hp.
The rest of the deck was:
Move x6
Attack x2
Grow x2 (make sure to upgrade Sow)
Branch out x1 (can easily replace with an attack)
Sunshine x1
Seed Sword x1 (can easily replace with an attack)
Treefolk Rock x1 (just to be safe)

Place your Commander and head straight to Bernard, defeating any enemies in your way. Use your Commander to fight off enemies until you can spawn in Barrel Cactus. Once the enemies are mostly dealt with, move both characters to block the enemy spawners.
