How to unlock the Epic Troll Stash achievement in Fortnite - Definitive Guide

When you complete all quests from the first area (Stonewood), right after you unlock Plankerton, you will get a side quest called "Epic Troll Stash". To unlock this achievement, you have to complete that quest. To complete the quest itself, you need to play in 15+ areas.

The ultimate goal of the quest is finding the troll key to open a phantom chest. The phantom chest is a pink chest that looks like a chest-shaped ghost and is hidden somewhere on the map. You might find that chest at any time, which probably means that someone in the match has the side quest active, but only those with the active side quest and the key will be able to open it.

You get the troll key by whacking the troll that sometimes takes your BluGlo when you are about to grab it. You may have to try this a few times before you get the key. When you get it, you will see a message at the end of the match saying that you now have the troll key. After that, you just have to find the phantom chest and open it for its loot. The achievement pops at the end of the match, when you get your chest and quest rewards.

The phantom chest can spawn anywhere in any map (thanks Ztr7 for the supplementary info), and there are no marks on the mini-map or the map to guide you as to where it might be, so you'll just have to explore.

So, in a nutshell:

1) Complete Stonewood, get side quest "Epic Troll Stash"
2) Play in 15+ areas
3) Whack the troll until you get the troll key
4) Look for the phantom chest and open it

Update (Oct 31, 2017): Some people are having issues with this quest registering as complete and therefore can't unlock the achievement. Check the comments for a little more info (I don't know how to solve it though, but I'll keep my eyes open and update this as soon as I have new info)

Update (Nov 11, 2017): This is a known-issue, as acknowledged by Epic Games here: https://www.epicgames.com/fortnite/forums/bugs-issues/bug-re...
So hopefully it will be fixed soon!

Update (Dec 7, 2017): This has been fixed with today's update. Thanks Master Chiefing and Lythiris for the info. My guess is that it won't unlock retroactively though, you'll probably have to find the chest and open it one last time for the quest to register as completed.

So I’ve found the chest twice now and opened it and collected all the items yet the mission won’t show as complete. We’re completing the mission as well. Am I missing something ridiculously easy to get the mission to be completed?

hmmm.... that's weird. Just to make sure, the chests you've opened had that pink mist around them, right?
My first thought was that it might be an ach. app issue, but the fact that you were able to open it twice clearly points to some issue with the game. If you open it, you should get the achievement. Oh! Unless you didn't complete those missions sucessfully? You have to successfully finish the mission for it to register. That's the only thing I can think of.

They are definitely getting completed and from everything I’ve looked up to compare it’s definitely the correct chest. I’m going to try again today since the servers seem like they are worse on the weekends. Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the info and tip Runner. I did submit a bug report days ago, but I did indicate an achievement problem(heh). Good advice about the quest not registering completion. I'll resubmit.

My quest had been bugged. There was an update today and the quest completed on my next chest but no achievement. Quit and relaunched the game and it popped on the load screen.

I've been trying to do this for a couple months now, and have still never even seen a troll key... I've had that mission active since some time in October, and I play every day.

The troll key is not an item that you pick up during the match, you get it with your rewards at the end of the match. To get it, you have to complete a whack the troll during a sucessful match (you may have to do it several times until you get the key)

I've completed Stonewood but don't have the quest. Do you have to run the first Plankerton Storm Shield mission first?

I don't remember, but you probably do, because you can't actually play in Plankerton until you complete your 1st defense there.

how do you get whack-a-trolls to appear? i know you need to collect bluglo, but is there something specific i need to do? no matter how many bluglo i collect i can never get one to show up.

It's random, but usually the bluglo is in a somewhat open area (meaning no walls close to it). I would maybe try the outer area, outside the city, suburbs or industrial zone. I never found one inside a building. Other than that, you just have to keep trying, You'll find one eventually.

Master Chiefing, you are not the only one having this issue. I have opened more than a few of these without the achievement popping.

My first chest was on an unsuccessful mission. After that I was unable to get any more troll keys, but was able to open numerous troll stash locations without acquiring a new key. Can anybody confirm that the troll key is used upon opening a loot stash or will you always have one? It is possible that my initial mission failure glitched the achievement. I'll keep trying...

The troll key is a unique item that is tied to the side quest, so you won't be getting any new ones. The fact that you can still open troll chests indicates that you still have your key, as expected since the game hasn't registered that you completed the quest. In my case, after I opened the troll chest and received the corresponding quest rewards at the rewards screen after the match ended, whenever I see a troll chest I'm not able to open it. So you would seem to be ok on that front.

Now that there's more than one person with this issue, my guess would be that this is some random bug that affects some players only. You should send in-game feedback describing your issue (troll chest quest not registering as completed in successfully completed matches). I wouldn't mention the achievement not unlocking, as I think that's just a consequence of the quest not registering as complete and my impression with developers in general is that they worry about achievemnts not unlocking last. If you point them to a game bug, I believe they are more likely to look into it sooner.

You can also post in their forums at https://www.epicgames.com/fortnite/forums/bugs-issues/bug-re..., they read them but usually do not post replies. However, more people with the same issue might surface, and that would help you gain visibility. And other players might also help you find a workaround or at least give an explanation of the issue.

So I found the chest again today, opened it and successfully finished the mission I was on and still no luck. I found someone on the forums that posted about this bug and I responded to back their claim. I also submitted through the in-game feedback so hopefully this bug can get fixed on an upcoming update so it sounds like that is all aligned with what Runner eGirl was suggesting. I'm sure it'll get fixed at some point especially with multiple people reporting on it now.

Troll - sometimes appears when trying to take Sinegel. Portals begin to appear along the perimeter of the place, from which the troll appears and disappears. Kill him. A key will fall out of it. Then carefully study the map, you will find a chest near which there will be a sign with a picture of a troll. Open the chest. The task can be completed over several missions. If you picked up the key, but managed to find the chest, it doesn’t matter, in the next mission you can immediately start looking for the chest. This applies to all missions. Progress continues.

The problem with the trophy dropping was resolved by patch 1.10. The trophy now drops normally.

The trophy is given after finishing the mission, and not after opening the chest.

When collecting blueberry, pay attention to where it lies - the more flat the area, the higher the chance that a troll will come out. We kill him and pray that the key falls. The key fell - we begin to look for the hiding place.
Often, troll chests are located in a cave, hidden rooms (underground or at the very bottom of a crypt, under metal structures, maybe in basements (but not a fact) or under a bridge - when approaching it you will see a special troll mark on a tablet nearby. If there is a key no - the cache will be semi-invisible.

PS: The game has a side quest - find the troll's key and find the troll's hiding place. The task was given to me personally in the Plankerton area (1-3 defense). At the beginning, after 30 games, I collected all the blueberries and the troll didn’t even appear, which was depressing. Everything was decided simply - I continued to collect all the blueberries in all matches and in the end trolls began to appear and the key fell out. All that remains is to find the cache (the time was much faster than the key) - open it, do the quest. The trophy will count (verified).
