How to unlock the Drifting Away achievement in Forza Motorsport 5 - Definitive Guide

I did this with the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta that was given as the Tier 5 reward from Forza Rewards. I made a setup that you can download if you want by searching for '7000 Drift Achievement' in the tuning setup section.

Get in your Ferrari and then head over to 'Tune/Upgrade' press X to tune the car and then goto setup manager with select. You can then press select again and then search for description '7000 Drift Achievement'. Load the setup, it's free.

Once the setups loaded go back to the main menu and choose Free Play. Select Indianapolis Motor Speedway (the forth one), I left the laps at 5. Before starting go to Assists to turn off assists. This will help the car get sideways for longer.

I put braking line on for the clips so you can see where I started the drifts from.
Braking ABS OFF
Steering Normal
Traction & Stability Control OFF
Shifting MANUAL
Damage, Fuel & Tyre Wear OFF

Track is the oval, Brickyard Speedway.

Pause the game once it starts and go to HUD and turn Drift HUD to ON.

I was doing about 170 coming into the first left after the long straights. Stay to the right on the straight and give it a bit of handbrake to start the drift as you turn left, then steer right into the drift to keep the back end from sliding out too far and keep the throttle full while you're sliding.

You don't have to do this all in one drift as you can see from the video I made, there were two smaller drifts after the big first one.

EDIT: Some people have said it notifies you of the Drifting away achievement multiple times before the achievement will be on your profile.

I did the rest of my perfect drifts on the test track accessed from the tuning menu by pressing Y as there are no cars to get in your way then. You can carry on round there as long as you need to get the Sidewinder achievement by doing 20 perfect drifts, anything above 5000.

The sidewinder achievement popped for me after I paused and finished the race/testing.

I also had the issue where the achievement popped but then wasn't on my profile. In a five lap race the achievement popped on the screen at least five times. Bizarre! http://sdrv.ms/1ioknTi
It did eventually imprint on my profile.

Thanks for the tips Prya.
I managed to get the achievement on the standard setup with your assists configuration. I downloaded your tune but didn't install it as I wanted to save my credits.

I didn't have any issues with it popping multiple times myself, it did record a lot of clips when I was doing the drifts but I only saw the achievement one once. I've added a bit to the solution to say it may not pop straight away.

I don't know what I am doing wrong. I always seem to hit the outside wall, even if I start all the way to the left side of the track. I am terrible at drifting. >.<

I got it by just doing tiny drifts for half the track. What a pain in the ass.

zZDazManZz - Forza rewards this month is giving 1,000,000 credits for each tier so it's worth trying it again. Sometimes it works for me sometimes it doesn't but you have a whole month to log in.

Doing it in Test Drive mode sucks because you can't rewind if you screw up one of the turns, meaning you have to do another half a lap before you can even attempt another drift. A long race with no opponents is much better.

Just as a note, the xbox update a week ago, did fix some notifications problems people were having. IDK if it fixed this achievement or not, but thought I'd throw that out there.

Just want to add for anyone who struggles with this achievement I would also suggest when you are making the turn as soon as you use the e brake quickly drop down to 4th gear will keep your speed and momentum going around the corner also making the slide/drift last a lot longer I also did it looking outside my car view not cockpit also makes getting 5,000 a lot easier if you get the cornering down.

I am almost positive that this will not unlock unless you earn 7,000 drift points in one clean run without rewind. Both times I earned 7,000 with rewind I only had the game clip recorded. First time without rewind the achievement popped.

I suck at drifting so I bought the car/tune right away and went in to free play and used all the settings above. It took me forever, but at least I was earning XP along the way. +1

The sidewinder cheevo only pops during free play, not test drive. It just records DVR in test drive.

I definitely was not clean on the lap. But I didn't touch rewind, and the first time I hit 7000 (and kept it by staying on the track through the end of the drift) and it unlocked and stuck.

I unlocked this first go and I used about 20 rewinds during the drift to get it perfect.

I've done this 3 times, my last drift being 9,000 yet no achievement. I've had game clips being recorded every time mind. Going by what you've said, I guess I'll wait and see if it appears on my profile soon.

Got it using a stock AC Cobra on the Indianapolis oval.

I got Sidewinder no problem in test drive. For this one I went into free play with 1 AI and it popped as soon as I did a 7000+ drift.

Since the game is not on the marketplace anymore I dont think you can access tunes/etc bcus theres no search for tunes from what i found. I upgrade the F12 to s800 (i would suggest putting more power into the engine to make it 800-900 Performance Index but not necessary) n got it on Indy Oval. You do not need to do a 7000+ drift in one drift, you can start another one before the Drift Score Counter disappears.

I had to do it twice. First time only recorded a clip, second time around achievement unlocked.

I had the same issue as a acaraba above. After 2 7000 drifts that recorded and the achievement not sticking, I changed the One's setting to keep the game DVR recording. Next I loaded up my car and the Indy track in freemode vs 1 AI for one lap. I hit the 7000 mark, no achievement popped-up on screen, then finished the race. After the load out from the finish, the achievement was on my card despite no indicators that it unlocked, and finally stuck. Not sure if the steps I took helped, or it was luck, but worth a try if the issue mentioned hits you.

This is one of the most frustrating achievements. 10 drifts of over 7,000 in free mode and it only popped on the 10th one. Can't figure out why developers put these glitchy achievements in games. I mean, it records the drift and even names the recording the same as the achievement, so clearly you have met the requirements if you get that video. So glad I am done with drifting in this game and can now concentrate on racing.

Warning: This is a copy-paste solution from the Sidewinder achievement. Its an excellent guide to drifting BUT it does not apply to the Drifting Away achievement, you cant use Test Drive for that achievement. I got 7000+ and the DVR-clip 3 times on Test Drive mode, but no achievement popped, then I read a few guys here got it with Free Play mode. So, I picked to race 1 drivatar and 50 laps and on my first 7000+ drift the achievement popped.

So, for me this is a -1 solution for the Drifting Away-achievement, but is a great guide to drifting.

Just a quick tip. If you follow Prya's solution you can earn the Sidewinder achievement in the Test Drive mode easily but if you are having trouble unlocking this Drifting Away achievement, choose Free Play mode rather than test driving. Using the same car (Ferrari F12 Berlinetta) and same track (Indy Oval) this achievement should unlock once you hit your 7,000 points and you will also see a game clip pop up.

Try, if it doesn’t work, or if you crash, use rewind, drift points don’t disappear
