How to unlock the Golden Standard achievement in Forza Motorsport 5 - Definitive Guide
There are 628 total events, broken down into eight Leagues, each of which is broken down into a set of Championship Series. The number of Events in each League is in brackets [] and the number of Events in each Series within the League are in parenthesis (). There are a certain number of Events in each Series that are required to be finished before the Series is considered 'complete'. Once this happens, the Bonus events for the Series are unlocked, and are optional. Unfortunately, you cannot see the Events in a Series until you start it.
What you have to do to earn a Gold medal depends on the Event. In races (16-player), you get a Gold medal if you finish in the Top 3. In other events (Chase or Cone, for example), you must be the outright winner by placement or time to get Gold.
Based on the earned achievements of the first gamer to unlock the achievement on the site, you do not have to get Gold in every single Event in the game to get this achievement. This gamer has gotten the 400 Gold medals achievement, yet has not earned the achievements for completing 10, 15, 25, or 40 Championship Series.
UPDATE 1: As noted by LucasAnimal in the comments, you can repeat previously-completed events and get credit for them multiple times (I have verified this):
You can also repeat career races for gold medals. It is much faster to get them as less loading screens, but you would still need to do 40 Series, so repeating races would only be effective for the last 100 or so Medals if you wanted both achievements.
I would suggest one of the Track Days events where you have to overtake X amount of cars. Especially in the lower-level cars, these events can last only a single lap and be completed quickly if you choose to go this route.
UPDATE 2: I did a couple of hours with these selections to get a "buffer" of Gold Medals as I started to finish up the Career mode:
1. Select the Sport Compact League. This is the upper left option.
2. Select the Early Sport Compact. This is the top-middle option.
3. Select your car. I used the Toyota MR2 as I had it in my garage.
4. Select the second event - Indianapolis Motor Speedway Tracks Days event
Run this event until you feel you have enough of a "buffer" for your Golds. There are some events I'm not a great fan of (Bowling, for example), so I wanted enough so I didn't have to bother getting a Gold in every single event I tried.
This event was taking me almost exactly three minutes from the start of one run to the start of another, including menu selections and loading screens. Obviously, this will give you roughly 20 Golds per hour. If you find a more efficient way to get extra Golds, please let me know in the comments.
UPDATE 3 : With the addition of the free Road America Track Add-On, there are now additional races available in each championship. I have updated all the counts to reflect this. Thanks to Dakrkplayer2 and OMG Lumi for providing the update and information.

Easy Gold Medal In 2 Minutes
This is just a quick post for those who are working on getting this achievement completed and only need to grind out that last few remaining gold medals (I only needed 16 more after completing 40 Championship Leagues).
Championship League: Sports Compact
Class: Early Hot Hatch
Race: #4 - Bowling
Including loading menu's, this will take around 2.05 min for each gold medal. Hope this helps cut down on grinding time!
I sucked at almost every other bowling race, but by following this path, I was able to get more than enough points to hit Gold with each race.
