before you are left free to roam in the solo career, you will go through one group of each of the volumes, and the achievement will pop.

You can "free roam in the career" as soon as you have finished the first Car Division (or before that, but you will lose your progress). Either way you will get this achievement at the exact same time as

The DLC Expansion volumes count towards this achievement as well.

If you have the DLC and complete them first, you will get this even if you've never completed a single career race. All DLC races also count towards the "One for the History Books" achievement as well.

I can confirm that. I finished the NASCAR Expansion DLC, and once I finished the last race, this achievement popped.

Your career consists on the 5 Race Volumes as explained during the introductory races. Each Volume contains 3 Series and each Series consists of several races. If you follow the linear path, you will races each each Volume in order and complete all volumes eventually. In the linear path, this will unlock at the same time as "Championship Legend" and "Just Getting Started."
