Each level has 3 stars through their maps. The stars are easier to get in the early levels, but since you need to clear level 18 to 100% this game, you should get 18 stars just by playing normally, with no need to go out of your way anywhere except a couple of the early levels where it’s easy to get the stars without endangering your run.

There are signs along your path pointing out which direction the stars are in. Sometimes you’ll have to backtrack to reach that direction.
