This is not as hard as people may think, YES you have to complete the story without using a continue but its not a very long story anyways, only about 15 levels, maybe a little less.
Anyways, all you have to do is, once you have one life left (you can see how many lives you have left at the top left of your screen) quit out to the main menu and load up your last saved game and continue playing as you were.
