Ok, so i didn't write a guide for this before because I thought it would be obvious.
but someone actually PMed me with this question, so I thought I'd share my answer with everyone and make a solution for it :)
to level up a sentient you need to feed him crystals. blue/red/yellow for example. crystals come from mining asteroids and many people don't know this: they also come from desynthesizing ship upgrades***
the easiest way ofc is to level your basic sentient instead of a legendary one ;)
in the sentient options you can turn "auto-feed" on (for just this sentient, for all sentients or off)
so, just take a ship with 4 weapon slots. equip 4 sentients, turn auto-feed on for your favourite one and off for the rest, then go AFK in the middle of a big asteroid field ;)

indeed a normal one maxes out earlier than the epic/legendary ones, so you might wanna go for a normal one to get this achievement*** desynthesizing: while in space, press the back button, go into your ship options and into ship upgrades. there you can select a slot for a ship upgrade or desynthesize it

I don't know if its different for the other sentients but a common one maxes out at level 32. Adding that would be great info!

Does the color of the crystal make any difference to the sentients?

Press the 
button to bring up the menu and toggle auto-feed on your sentient to have them automatically gain levels. All you have to do now is head to a debris field and start mining. Sentients will automatically move to mine and collect ore and crystals. Maximum level for uncommon sentients is level 40 (32 for common sentients).
