How to unlock the A Real American Hero achievement in G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout - Definitive Guide

So, the easiest way to get this done is to use the positive modifiers that unlock after completing a playthrough. However, there are still ways to make this easier.

The key here is character selection. For Joe missions, use Duke. For Cobra missions, Baroness. But why only these two?

Quite simply, you're going to be shooting a lot of enemies. And their primary weapons are assault rifles. Unlike SMGs, they do damage quickly and effectively.

They also don't need to be reloaded as often, making it easier to take out more enemies in one go. And if you use the LT to do a quick aim, there's a very good chance you can get a one-hit kill on mooks. Boss enemies will take more damage, of course, but with more shots to use before a reload, you won't be dancing around as much trying to avoid getting hit.

Good luck in your playthrough. It's pretty painless once you get into a rhythm. And for God's sake, DO NOT USE SCI FI.

Going to echo Duke/Baroness here, but I did find myself grabbing an assault rifle with Baroness since I found it a bit easier than her default.

Modifiers I used: double health, double damage, infinite ultimates, infinite ammo

I only had trouble during a couple boss fights, and would try to spam ultimates then lure the boss into it if they tended to get too close for good aim assist (Roadblock, Destro, Storm Shadow).

For the vehicle missions I switched weapons to the charge cannon and held RT the whole time, letting the splash damage and aim assist do half the work. Only retry was during the boss fight of the last one.

I'm only on the fourth mission at the moment, but I can tell you all one thing:

This is by far one of the most unfair "hardest difficulty" achievements I've ever encountered, and I haven't even seen the worst of it yet, I'm sure.

For one thing, the enemies hit like trucks. Second, they FOLLOW YOU everywhere you go. That's right. There's nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. There's no point in taking cover, because every enemy will follow you to the ends of the Earth in a determined effort to take your life. The devs designed the AI for one singular purpose: to terminate you with extreme prejudice, and they will risk life and limb to carry out their programming. Third, the enemies move like MLG pro players. They are ridiculously overtuned here. I've been gaming for many moons now, and I have NEVER seen AI that act as if they need a barrel of Ritalin to calm down like they do here. They will juke, two step, shuffle, basically become unhittable moving targets. Absolutely infuriating gameplay design. Fourth, enemies are complete bullet sponges, so expect to mag dump into the most basic enemies only to barely kill them.

Your shield will get destroyed after 4 or 5 hits, which turns this difficulty into a big game of shoot and run. You will spend more time waiting for your shield to recover than you will actually fighting.

Oh and to make things worse, there are long stretches where you fight through tough battles, only to be killed by some bullshit, and the game sends you WAY back, forcing you to repeat 10-15 minute sections at a time.

Just wanted to give you all a warning about what you'll face if you choose to go for this. It's obviously doable, but it's still extremely tough and borderline cheap.

TLDR
You can play through the entire game on the hardest difficulty with modifiers and still get the achievement. You must beat the campaign on any difficulty first, then you can replay each mission on Real American Hero with any character you want with modifiers on, which will make this a cakewalk. Thanks to Simply DAG for the confirmation.

One caveat....there are three vehicle based missons that don't allow for mods, so just prioritize towers and watch out for road hazards. I did all three legitimately on RAH first try so they're all pretty easy imo.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll be returning this and switching it for the Switch version.

Don't return it just yet.

I'm hearing from some folks that if you beat the game once on any difficulty, it unlocks mods that make the game extremely easy and you can use them on the hardest difficulty and still get the achievement. Hasn't been confirmed but I'll update the solution once it is.

Play the game on Easy (Action Figures) getting all the collectibles, story based achievements, and doing all the side missions. This way you unlock all the modifiers. Replay Mission 0-17 on "Real American Hero" with the positive modifiers to make this fairly easy. Difficulty DOES stack so only 2 play-throughs required for the easiest and quickest route to the 1000gs.

(Difficulty)

Once you play through the game once on any difficulty, you unlock modifiers. Modifiers DO NOT negate trophies. There are modifiers that make the game harder and ones that make it a lot easier. The majority of the missions are pretty brutal on Real American Hero difficulty, so utilizing the modifiers will greatly reduce your struggle.

The following modifiers are what you should use for your Real American Hero playthroughs:

  • Give player double HP and shield
  • Player does additional damage
  • Unlimited Ammo
  • Enemies drop grenades
  • Enemies drop additional ammo
  • Enemies explode once killed, damaging others around them
  • Unlimited Ultimates
