1. Set Up

Make you start in New Game+ and select “Yes” for Jack’s Progression. Having Jack Maxed out makes this much easier. For mutators, here are the ones that help

-Reload: Fills Clip
-Ammo: Double
-Head Explosion: Grenade
-Big Head: On
-Jack Recharge: Fast

You can also select the character skins, weapon skins, and Batista if you still need those achievements.

2. Dying

The excellent method that was previously useful has been patched as of the Dec 15 Title Update. The method is detailed below, for those interested.

The Gears 4 save/backup method should still work after the other method was patched:

-To force sync a checkpoint, close the game or switch profiles
-When you die, do not quit or load. Stay at the death menu
-Hit the guide, highlight Gears 5, hit “Manage Game and Add-ons”
-Select your save data, hit “delete” and select “from this console”
-When you boot up the game, it will sync your forced cloud sync checkpoint.

EDIT:
For the PC crowd, this link has a comprehensive guide for locating your save files. It should still work like the Xbox method if you keep the game running while doing this.

Be Aware, this method may be unreliable on the Xbox Series X|S. Unclear as to why, but it may pertain to the Series X|S Quick Resume and Cloud Save improvements. Some users have had issues, and some have not.

Some users have reported the addition of a guest account will prevent progress tracking. It appears using another live profile will alleviate the problem. Since the method to catch a single chapter has been patched, I would recommend you either play through the whole game with two Live profiles or play single player.

3. Playing

With double ammo and refill active reloads, your selected weapons functionally have infinite ammo. This coupled with the Fast Jack Recharge on Stim, Cloak, and Flash Freeze make the game fairly trivial.

Stim can you you out of a pinch, revive you if you are down, or pad your health if you are about to get blown up by a popper or Dropshot/Boomshot.

Cloak will allow you to execute most ground troops quickly and safely. I mainly used this in the Paduk section of 4-1, since there are several Hunters and Grenadiers, but is useful throughout to avoid direct combat.

Flash Freeze will outright kill Juvies and Poppers, as well as disable the shields from Bastions. It will also freeze nearly every boss type enemy (Stump, Snatcher, Carrier, Matriarch, Warden). It will stun the Swarmak, but not fully freeze. It does not affect the Kraken in either fight, but can pop a tongue if timed right. I would avoid using it on the Kraken and focus on shooting/explosives. A well-placed Boomshot can knock out all three tongues in one shot.

However, the game still has a few sections where instant death can happen pretty easily. Watch for Hunters with Torque Bows in 2-1, 3-3, and 4-1 in particular. Both Kraken fights can end your game if an NPC dies.

I've had issues with Ironman randomly turning off, as I know neither I or the npcs ever died once in those playthroughs where it mysteriously happened.

As far as tips go:
It can't be stressed enough how careful you have to be. I'm on my at least my 20+th playthrough after dying numerous times to the various instakills and just various bs that can happen. It's strange how you can go DBNO (unlike on higher difficulties) but frags can kill you instantly (not to mention just teleporting to wherever you are even if you cant see the grenadier that threw it). I've gotten as far as the Kraken fight before failing, so it's doable. But you wouldn't believe the mind-boggling, super infuriating ways the game cheats you.

Ps: be very careful shooting explosive weapons from a high elevation while in cover, I've blown myself up in so many goofy ways. (Namely in the section where you have to ride the lift driven by Fahz).
Oh, and be very alert as to where your teammates are as they can wander right in front of you as you fire off your boomshot and get you killed.
Oh and Snipers can headshot you.

Okay, few things. I am using two controllers my account on Inconceivable Ironman and guest on causal beginner. if you stay on the death screen and delete on data on console it does work., but a few points to note. it only shows the guest account to delete the console data, this works for your main account as well.
i check and i am thru act 1 and it shows Inconceivable iron man completed. In addition, even when i save check points in front of big battles i notice that when i died. it takes me back way before the check point. so i am not sure why there is a cloud data save lag. I had to play a few successful battles scenes over. the 2 controllers are both helpful, but also exhausting. I also notice that even when i have the guest controller on beginner the game sometimes makes it intermediate, so i must go back to lobby change and reenter the game.

Hello, I'm here to add a few tips on top of what has already been said here.
First of all, I can confirm that the save exploit is still functional as of May 16th, 2021.
Now, a few other tips:
- Regarding the method to force a checkpoint in a Xbox Series S console:
Before even starting playing your desired checkpoint (Say, the Matriarch), quit to the main menu, once you are in the gears main menu make sure to close the app manually pressing the options button, just in case open another game that syncs your cloud saves (Say, Halo MCC) and then close it and re open Gears 5, the cloud save now will be synced to the checkpoint you set it to, so if you die you can perform the save exploit as listed below and it will work!
A few other tips I want to add:
- Since the achievement is unlocked in Experienced difficulty or higher, there's no real reason to do the campaign on Insane or Inconceivable, unless you want those precious bragging rights.
- Make sure to fully upgrade the Cloak ability, since you get a 30% speed bost, that combined with the fast jack cooldown you can breeze through the game.
There are certain specific situations where you don't need to do the save exploit to save the run and not lose the ironman status. Say, you are in DBNO and a Juvie approaches and executes you, if you are fast enough to press start and quit to the main menu BEFORE you see the crimson skull on your screen you can prevent the ironman status being taken away, think of it like playing Halo LASO or with the Iron Skull on where you press start and quit to menu to prevent restarting the whole mission.
-Another tip that I would like to add is that you can pretty much stun lock the Matriarch spamming Jack's Flash Freeze ability for 90% of the match.
Any other thing that comes to my mind I will add it here.

For PC Game Pass/Windows Store installations (i.e. not Steam), the save location is:
%LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.HalifaxBaseGame_8wekyb3d8bbwe\SystemAppData\wgs

You can just open file explorer and paste that path in the address bar.

Also, for this to work on PC you need to:
1. Stay on the death menu
2. Delete the save folder
3. Alt-F4 to kill the game
4. Restart the game

When you do that, you should see the save sync dialog when starting the game and the save folder should appear again.

I don’t know why people are saying Zorc Freeks comment is a lifesaver as that literally stopped the delete save glitch working for me on Series X.

I don’t recommend closing the game. You need the game to send you a few chapters back whenever you die, whenever I got sent back to the same chapter I was currently on I lost Ironman every time. This unluckily happened to me on the very last boss fight and I had to restart the whole game.

Overall this achievement is annoying even though it’s fairly easy. I recommend doing some studying on both Leviathan fights, just educate yourself on the bosses patterns and exactly what you need to do before you proceed, especially on the final boss fight because the game auto saved for me at that point and I lost all my progress due to an NPC dying. Also the Windflare storm sections. The only things you really need to avoid are the tornado’s 🌪️ that will kill you in one hit. Don’t even worry about the other stuff going on, it can’t cause real damage. I recommend going under the bridge on each run.

Spamming flash and cloaking seemed to be the best course of action to beat the game as easily as possible.

I've been doing some experiments with issues on series X around the cloud sync method resulting in ironman mode turned off after following the recommended steps on death. When I would test dying and waiting for the death menu to show up, I could never get it to properly load the cloud save with ironman staying intact (when following the Manage game and Add-on steps). However, I tested out pausing the game right as the red death gear appears, deleting the local save data while paused and re-launching, and so far, that has consistently preserved the ironman enablement on the save. If I had to guess (based on comments in this thread), at some point in early 2022 they attempted to patch this exploit by triggering a cloud save update at the point of the death menu showing up. I'll update this post if I have any issues with pausing before the death menu appears, but so far, I've managed to preserve the same save after dying about 10 times.

Update: I made it to Act 2 mission 4 doing this method successfully, until Del randomly died during the section where you run through the ice storm. Since that instantly brings up the mission failed menu, I wasn't able to recover the save with ironman enabled after deleting save data :/ It seems there isn't any way to avoid that type of failure (as others have mentioned being weary of NPC deaths during boss fights).

I ended up just going for this on the PC version instead, much easier to maintain multiple backups of ironman saves.

Everything stated in this guide still works. Please add that when using a second account do not use a guest as it will not count. I did the wind flare section with a guest and was stuck on %93 until I did the section with a dedicated account.

Are you using the New Game + option before trying to start a new chapter?

Are you playing enough to reach a new checkpoint on said chapter?

Are you starting a private lobby, using Custom option, rather than selecting Resume or Load campaign?

Are you selecting Act 1, Chapter 1 and then setting Ironman On?

Are you keeping the same mutators and settings?

I've done this solution method a lot of times and it worked like a charm.

Is there a way to know what chapters you may have missed? Sitting at 86% after doing what I though was all chapters. I'm sure I used a second controller with a second profile logged in for two chapters which would make sense in % terms but would be good to know for sure what didn't count.

Yurgi - As of right now, I'm unaware of a method for checking which chapters have been completed with Ironman. The menu doesn't have that as an option, since there *shouldn't* be a way to complete chapters out of order. I'll do some digging when I get home and see if I can figure out anything more concrete.

In Gears 4, it was possible to do this using 2 controllers with a dummy account playing on a lower difficulty. Your main account stays idle while you use your dummy account to do all the work. Does that still work for this achievement?

Ebon Hawk - it does, but it must be a separate live profile. Using a guest account seems to cause the game not to track chapters as completed. Honestly, I never even used a second account. With the mutators and the reset method listed, the actual game is fairly easy.

Looks like custom lobby method has been patched in the latest update. New game plus doesn't seem to be an option and will override your save.

Not sure if gears 4 method still works.

No mention of this in the patch notes released.

Edit: can confirm! Right before the first drone encounter i closed the game, restarted and died, followed all the steps. After syncing and reloading the game, Ironman is still on and i continue the struggle.. Have fun!

I didn’t back out to main menu, but once I had restarted the checkpoint, the deleting the save method (which had worked many times before) won't get my Ironman back. Hopefully I should be able to play Ironman beginner back up to the part I was on and then switch difficulty back to inconceivable.

Don’t restart checkpoint. Stay at the menu that comes up when you die. If you leave that menu on any way, it will sync with the cloud and you will have to restart.

I kept screwing up the cloud save exploit because I wasn't forcing a checkpoint by quitting the game intermittently. It's very important you don't skip that step, or else Ironman won't save even if you do everything else right.

Hey, to fix this issue you need to save and quit the game to main menu, close gears 5 and then open it again. (While being alive, not dead or about to die!!!) Then it lets you use that checkpoint. DO IT ALWAYS WHEN YOU KNOW HARD PART IS COMING. I tested because i had the same issue and it worked. Took me 8hours but finally unlocked this cheevo today.

Keoskey - it indeed can. However, users have reported that doing so with a guest controller can lead to lost progress or Ironman being disabled. I noted above that if you plan to do this, make sure you use a separate Live account and keep them signed in for the duration.

Sam Squanch - I don’t think it does, but I found the Hunter Elites with Torque Bows to be a particular annoyance. Other than that, I never experienced random explosive death. If anyone has a different experience, feel free to chime in.

I can confirm that using a guest account worked for me at least. I had my main account as Jack and played through the story with the suggested modifiers. Due to a glitch in Act 3 Chapter 3, I did have to exit to the lobby and re-enter the game solo and Ironman was still enabled. Once I was past the glitch, I set my guest account back up and finished out the game.

If someone has already done it, they could load up checkpoints for the end of each mission and get it that way, iv had the worst luck trying to get this, Jack's ability keeps disappearing can't pulse the ice so if someones got the saves pleas help

I followed the article you sent, is "Halifax" the way to save Gears 5 ?, According to your guide, when you die, you should minimize the game go to the way (from the screenshot, link attached) and delete both files or only one of those ?, then should I close and open the game ?, so I could continue from the point of death ..?, sorry if there are many doubts.

I'm about to begin this achievement. Before starting, a few questions, just to be sure :

- Is it possible to dot it solo that way : my main account as Jack on Experienced difficulty and a second controller connected with a Live account on Beginner , I plan to play the whole campaign with the 2nd live account and do the Jack-dedicated phases when needed.

Ok, I want to do that, but what save data are you talking about, I'm not sure about deleting the good one, risking to erase all my online datas and everything I've accomplished since Oct. 2019. Xbox One console.

-Yes, it is. However, this makes using Jack’s abilities harder because you’d be swapping controller’s. Solo with Jack’s abilities is easier, imho.
-There is only one bit of save data to delete. This is why I specify “from this console only”. Everything is synced with cloud saves, so you are only deleting what has been done since the last sync. If you choose “delete all”, it erases everything. Don’t do that. Select “from this console only”. The game will close, and when it reopens it will sync with the cloud to your last synced checkpoint. You can force the game to sync by returning to the menu and force quitting the game.

This is infuriating. Playing late last night, got to Act 3, talk to Baird, Padduck, go out to the landing pad, save and quit the game (Ironman still on) as I didn't want to do the long driving sequence that night. Log on today, ironman is mysteriously shut off and turning back on will restart my save file???

Did this first try not too bad just use cloak and flash the entire game. Only really used flash on bosses. Used long shot or embar the entire game so wouldn’t accidentally kill myself with explosives. Just focus scions and explosive juvies. Final boss just spam grenade launcher.

You guys have to make sure you back out to the menu (and close the game if I recall) every now and then, if you do the delete save glitch it will only revert you back to the last time you went back to the menu and close the game (and then you can reload it up), the game only saves to the cloud/xbox once you back out to menu (and close the game), so do that frequently.

The Zorc method worked perfectly for me, never had an issue despite a handful of deaths. On the Series X. Simply quit to menu then force close the entire game every now and then to sync a checkpoint. If I died I hit the guide button > Gears 5 > Manage Games and Add-ons > Saved Data > Select Gamertag > Delete From Console. Restart the game and it will sync back to the old save when you last quit and keep you on Ironman. I was nervous every time, but no issues.

For xbox series x users.....
Use this method.

Important - Disable quick resume....

-To force sync a checkpoint, close the game.
-When you die, do not quit or load. Stay at the death menu
-Hit the guide, highlight Gears 5, hit “Manage Game and Add-ons”
-Select your save data, hit delete all
-When you boot up the game, it will sync your forced cloud sync checkpoint.

Thank you for this solution. I was able to recover my progress starting mid-campaign.

A strategy that helped me a lot: keep using Cloak to be invisible all the time. Enemies will stand still, waiting for you to kill them. It is very helpful on boss battles and also while walking around because you can move faster while invisible!

For storm part, you can join a second account or friend on beginner and if this person needs the achievement, he/she can rejoin on advanced before killing the last enemy (after shooting the rocket bridge).

So I've discovered if you go into campaign stats and click each act using the bumpers it will tell you the highest difficulty completed. For acts 1,2 and 4 it is saying highest difficulty experienced iron-man and they all have the same symbol for each chapter. It is thr gold experienced logo but with a red ring around it. In act 3 for me it is saying highest difficulty completed is inconceivable (I have done all chapters on inconceivable). All act 3 chapters have the inconceivable symbol however 3-2 and 3-3 are silver whereas 3-1 and 3-4 have the red ring like the experienced iron-man chapters. I am assuming unless you see the red symbol it hasn't been completed on iron-man. I'll report back once completed.

It's easiest to do on PC. Save location: C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.HalifaxBaseGame_8wekyb3d8bbwe\SystemAppData

Same as with Gears Tactics - copy the WGS folder somewhere else - that's your backup. In case you die and lose ironman, delete the original WGS folder and copy the backup there. I always make multiple backups, each in its own folder, just in case. There were some issues in Tactics when handling just certain files and not the entire folder, so always copy and delete the entire folder.

Steam Guide (over at trueachievements for Steam, the achievement didn't exist yet)

You can create backups just like in Gears Tactics and replace those backups with the current folder in case you died. I recommend doing backups at least at the start of every chapter. You can do one after every checkpoint if you feel like it.

Backups can be found here:

your_drive/your_steam_install_folder/Steam/userdata/your_user_id/1097840/

Just copy the entire "remote" folder or the contents of it to another folder whenever you feel like it. This can be done while the game is running.

If you die, just quit to desktop, replace the contents of the "remote" folder with your most recent backup and you can continue from that last backup.

PC Guide (Microsoft Store)

Same as above, however the folder you want to copy is called "wgs" and can be found here:

1. Campaign+ new game (3rd option)

2. PLAY CO-OP, WHILE YOU AS HOST SET ON EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTY.

3. Go to settings

4. Ironman - On
Customization - everything is on (also will unlock 3 other achievements).
Mutators - easy modifications to make your life easier, pick whatever you want (I picked big head mode - on, active reload - refills clip, headshot explosion - grenade, total ammo - double, jack cooldowns - fast).
Jack progression from campaign - on.
*Make sure you have completed the game before and collected at least 273 components and the ultimate upgrades. Will make your life much easier.
Lobby browser visibility - on (in case one of the players leaves).

5. Play throughout campaign+ and have fun!

*Tip 1
When you die, do not reload the checkpoint; quit to the main menu and form there reload the last save point. Do it and you'll have still the Ironman + the last checkpoint.

*Tip 2
In act 2 chapter 2-4 (open world) there is a location of lander retro relic (assault rifle). A very OP assault rifle. Search its location in order to pick it up. There are tons of guides in YouTube, Google and in here Trueachievements regarding relic weapons and locations.
