How to unlock the Again! achievement in Gears of War 3 - Definitive Guide

Sharing a new method that I found on x360a. Full credit goes to DeadMac.

Original Link

In split-screen Horde with Friendly Fire mutator, player 1 is killed via friendly fire in a corner, then goes into ghost cam. The 2nd player holds down "X" to constantly swap weapons (players must start with different weapons- Hammerburst and Lancer, for example) while player 1 repeatedly presses in the left stick to spot the weapons. Every 3 spots earns a Reconaissance ribbon worth 125 exp.

Before starting, be sure to give player 2's money to player 1 so player 1 can buy back in when done boosting. Then establish a base and finish the wave. You can quit to menu once the wave 2 countdown starts to earn all the experience from the ribbons. YOU MUST COMPLETE THE WAVE TO GET THE EXP FROM THE RIBBONS!!

This method is much easier with a turbo controller that can turbo the pressing of left stick. Otherwise you'll need to manually press the left stick for each spot. Controller 2's battery can be removed while "X" is pressed, which will continue swapping weapons without pausing the game! (Thanks Diamond Thing!)

I'm letting this setup run right now and I am getting 10 Reconnaissance ribbons every 45 seconds, which should net me 100k experience per hour. Will update solution in the morning with my results.

UPDATE: Setup ran (casual difficulty) for 8h17min and I received just over 1 million EXP!

Important! After about 9 hours and 10 minutes, the round will automatically start and enemies will kill your idlers. Simply restart at the current wave and finish it and you should receive all the experience from the ribbons you earned during the 9+ hours of idling..

A very good method for levelling up! :)
A tip though you might like to know. For the player 2 controller, keep the button held on X and then remove the batteries whilst picking up weapons. It gets stuck spamming X, meaning you only need to manually control player 1.

Weird- I just woke up to find both players dead with time of 9h12m. I can't figure out what happened to cause the wave to start. No biggie, I guess- I've got it running again.

Edited with Diamond Thing's battery tip!

You said this would be better using a turbo controller, which turbo controllers allow you to turbo the analog sticks? As all the ones ive found only allow turbo use on 8 buttons (LB, LT, RB, RT & A,B,Y,X)?

An excellent solution, Sully. Also, for those in the same boat as Hybrid without the friendly fire mutator, keep in mind that Bullet Marsh has the super handy Kryll dispenser (aka generator). I suppose Thrashball's scoreboard might work as well, but that'd take a bit of work, if it can even drop down before the first wave starts.

Ok tried this method now for a hole day. Works flawless!! i got now over 15.000 Ribbons. So for all statistical fans out there it will take around 38,5h to get from Lvl.1 to Lvl.100, and around 30.814 Ribbons (without any other ribbon or medal).

@ Vein 666, Yes me and a friend of mine are facing the same problem with dying at 9hr and 22 min. but if you restart the wave and finish you will get the exp for the ribbons around 700.000 exp. The most suitable reason for getting less exp is that the second player stop`s weapon changing, normal throw the weapon too far away.

I am seeing the same thing, I ran it during the day while I was at work, and I ended up at the death screen after 9h 13m. Now I came home and checked it about 9h 45m after starting it. I only got credit for 726 ribbons, whereas before during a 7 hr session I got over 6000. Perhaps there is a limit to the number of ribbons? Perhaps a limit to the number of minutes played before a base is established? We may never know, but i would not run this more than 9 hours at a time, just to be safe.

Switching between snub pistol and Gorgon pistol gives you double experience because you can pick those up twice as fast as you can pick up a rifle.

maybe i missed something, how are people boosting this method while they are sleeping? Video shows completing the wave by killing wave one, then exiting out... Maybe i'm slow to the party, but I didn't pick up on that part.
0
0
By ERNDAWWG on 04 Feb 2012 14:50
ERNDAWWG, you need to read the solution. It's clearly outlined.

The boosting comes from using turbo-controllers to auto-spot the weapons before they're picked up. Each 3 spots is 125 EXP. That is the part people are boosting while asleep. You don't earn the experience until the wave is completed. That's what the video shows, the collection of the experience earned while doing something else.

By BRiT wtfdotcom on 04 Feb 2012 16:23
just a note; if you're finding that your bot has stopped picking up the weapon, it's probably because it was thrown too far out of range. Make sure it's positioned just in front of the crack/line in the ground. Not too close to the wall.

I'm using the hori ex2 and it works. The most important thing, as noted above by DarthDawa, is making sure your bot is in the right spot to continue picking up weapons.

By EldritchSS on 06 Feb 2012 07:20
This may be useful in the guide. The game will put bots in after around 9 hours. You will be dead by around 9 hours 13 minutes. You must then select "Retry Current Wave" (or whatever it is named). When you finish this wave and quit at round 2 you will get ALL the XP from the 9 hour session 13 minute. It will however only show around 700 ribbons at completion. Checking the Stats page however will show you actually earned almost 9000

Got the controller in the mail today and with some help from FoXXy Lady Maus I got the controller set up and let it go for 6 hours while I slept. Woke up, finished the wave and I went from level 73 to level 82. I'm looking to Re-up by Thursday!!! With this I'm going all the way! I'll re-up for a second time then book it back up to level 100 and continue my quest for seriously. Thanks again to those who suggested a controller and vSully for the great solution.

@Fox XBL - the 3.1 method sucks compared to this...time is money and chapter 3.1 takes hours to do...Turbo controller easily pays for itself with this game and tons of other games. This method you spend a total of 2 minutes each setup. Everything is done while asleep or at work making money to buy sweat ass Turbo controllers instead of boosting chp 3.1 for 10 hours.

Im going to agree with YA BILLY on that one. I for one do not have as much time as I use to to play games and when I do get time I dont like to waste it boosting arcade. Having a job has really taken a toll on my gaming and I just dont have time, but leveling up while Im sleeping or working makes up for it.

I have the Datel Turbo Fire 2 and it works for this solution also. Unlike the Hori EX, however, you need to put something heavy on the stick to keep it pressed in for turbo. Thanks for the solution!!! <3

Worhammer - I just bought that one. Just remap the button to either the left or right bumper then rubberband it. For some reason you can't remap to the left/right triggers. You have to connect to a pc to remap. Set one option to your new buttton layout and the other to turbo. You can turn off the remap layout button until it's needed.

I'm fairly certain the difficulty only makes a difference to the amount of points you get for the wave, which really doesn't count for anything, and it adds more exp to the fortifications. I really don't think it changes how much you get from ribbons.

Darth Dawa --- yup... I got my Gold Wings doing this

... did this on Blood Drive though as I prefer to wait for the Locust to come running up the stairs to get me while I stay in the doorway of the spawn point (easier for me to pick them off, and I feel a little more secure that I won't die as opposed to playing on checkout). Once I'm done spotting/picking up weapons and ready to end the wave, I camp the 2nd controller in the little room and position his back to the wall (in between both windows) so I can see in split screen mode if an enemy is coming down the hallway across the way. Anyway... went from a fresh level 1 to a level 57 in a little over 8 hours while I slept.

Thanks to vSully for this... would not have gone through all the red and blue levels as I was right at the end of the King of COG boosting limit...

u get more ribbions if u use frag grenades, as they switch out faster. The only downside is that you cant buy yourself back in, back as long as u finish the wave with the second controller ur good.

By x jjaldana 2 x on 20 Feb 2012 21:55
Difficulty setting has no influence on XP, so you might as well put it on casual. You can have a max of 25% extra from Mutators since you need Friendly Fire on. Rifles and Shotguns will give you 13 ribbons a minute, Pistols and Grenades will give you 17. Over time (couple hours) the average will shift but very slightly. Either way, use Pistols or Grenades. My suggestion would be to use Pistols since they're cheaper and will get you back into the wave. Losing the wave means nothing really, just restart that wave and what you have will still be yours once you beat it.

Reconnaissance Ribbon: 125 points
Mutator Modifier: 25%
Reconnaissance Ribbon After Mutator: 156 points

Rifle & Shotgun:
Per Minute - 2,028 XP
Per Hour - 121,680 XP

Pistol & Grenade:
Per Minute - 2,652 XP
Per Hour - 159,120 XP

This solution is fracking brilliant. I bought a Datel Turbo Fire 2 controller (because the Hori Ex 2 controllers were out of stock everywhere). I remapped the buttons so the left stick click and Y were swapped. That way I could apply turbo to the Y button and rest a book on it overnight. I went from white 65 to green 49 in just a couple days. Thumbs WAY up for this solution. I'm probably going to stop when I'm in the 90s and then just play normally so i can get Seriously 3.0 when I get to 100 for the second time.

One question though, is there a max to the amount of recon ribbons one can get?
Posted by Revenga on 29 Feb 12 14:42:46

I've seen vids on youtube of obvious ribbon hacks...
here's one of them... ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnctdofRwwc&feature=relat...

about 1:08 or so into the vid you can see the reconnaissance ribbon is at 999,999....

you will not hit that though... I'm at 46,000+ and thats from a Red 30 all the way to my Gold Wings....

Great find Sully! Just started this and I can see that it will be a walk in the park! I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY ANYONE WOULD VOTE NEGATIVE ON THIS! They are probably just upset they don't have a turbo controller. For anyone looking for the Hori EX-2 I recommend watching amazon.com closely for the seller to have more. I missed it a few times but got mine a few months ago just by checking daily.

From looking at reviews of the Datel TurboFire 2 it sounds like there is software you can use to configure the controller. is this software needed to support programming the controller to auto fire the left stick? And if so, is this software windows only?

Using Mephisto03's hourly rate for pistols and a GoW3 XP calculator, it takes almost exactly 24 hours to go from level 1 to 100. So set this up to go for 8 hours overnight just 3 times and you've got a set of wings from scratch. Lather, rinse, repeat. Thanks everyone for coming up with this. Like YA BILLY said, time is money, so this solution is worth some big bucks! :)

I'm not voting negitively, but this solution still lacks some of the information necessary for it to be the top solution. It could still mention how to Re-Up once you hit level 100, as well as a warning for those working on Seriously 3.0

Act 3, Chapter 1. Get 2.5 mio points by killing reavers and finish the game. At the blackscreen after the stats view, reload checkpoint. You'll get a bit more than 20k every 3 min. 3 * 20 = 60, 20k * 20 = 400k. Worth it doing it atleast 4 hours. Else take this one here. More details in youtube.

i reckon u use a gorgon pistol for the swap because the 2nd player switches faster between pistols intead of the primary weapons, so instead of immediatly starting your 2nd player gives you all of his money so that you have $2000 then you buy the gorgon pistols witch cost only 200 or 300 i cant remember when doing this you still have enough money for a buy back to complete the wave if neccesary and you get more spot bonusses per hour if you are using a turbo controller dont know if this has been said before but this is the method im using, you get a positive vote from me for this solution

Awesome solution! I had been rank 17 after my first re-up when my player file got corrupted and everything reset. With this I've already surpassed where I was. I got a hori ex2 for this method as well as some other medals for gears.

I'm using blood drive, the room right off the initial spawn, swapping pistols and have two hard mutators plus friendly fire. Last night I got more than 1.5 million exp while I slept. I wedge the end of a paper clip to keep the left stick pressed in. I had seem photos of a toothpick, but I was worried about it splintering/breaking in/under the left stick

By Wannabe Actuary on 23 Apr 2012 15:37
Just wanted to add to my earlier comment. A gaming buddy of mine pointed out that with the Hori EX2, you don't need to wedge the stick down. Instead, while holding the turbo button down, double press the left stick and it will continually spam the button for you automatically. I do find that it seems to drift slightly, and it didn't when I had it wedged, so I do tend to check on it periodically while boosting

Arcade 3-1
Insane (x2.5) (Super Reload [-.25]+[.1]+[.1]) = x2.375

Base Point: 3'500,000 (I suggest 4million if you start from the scratch)
Then do the chapter until you came to defend the doors, kill the granadiers and bloodmout, until came the maulers, let them breake the second door (you must be running to the third place in that moment) then just kill some granadiers until came the boomers, let them destroy the 3d door).

(you must be in someplace you don't get shot to easy) (i suggest where's a sniper next to the turret on the left side) (you know where's is the sniper supply go upstais, pass the turret, and then there's some barriers with a sniper, that spot.

Then just kill like 20 boomers (easy job for a lancer or the pistol with active reload) don't worry about the granadiers getting inside the basement, the bots will take care of them, then just wait for the "Last Resort" and make it explode.

End of the chapter:

Final Score: 8,800,000 aprox.

4hours (aprox): 1,200,000 aprox. EXP Points

Much faster than this "new method".

While this is a good solution I am going to negative vote it, and illy tell you why. While its the best strategy to do while not hands on playing (sleeping, at work/school) requiring an altered controller to do this seems unfair to those who don't have one or are thinking of getting one just for this achievement.

I don't have any batteries, so I can't pull the batteries out of the 2nd controller. So by ^this rationale I'm down-voting because it's unfair that everyone else has batteries and I don't.

I love really handy threads like this you find dotted around; they often provide much more real-use information than the manufacturers description ever will.

Red Hot Nirvana, I am going to ask this in the nicest way possible. Are you an idiot, or a complete retard? You do not loose anything from this solution. Some people just do not gain something. So if you are begging for money on the streets, and someone gives you 95 cents, and you cannot do anything with just those 95 cents, would you go to the person and say, "f you?"

However they've discontinued stock in the UK so I'm just about to hunt for one as they are quite tempermental, mine broke after a few uses. Used it a few times, didn't use it for about a month or so, just went to use it again a couple of days ago and it won't work so returned it to Argos for a full refund to discover they don't stock it anymore.

Probably because it's crap and had too many returns or something, not surprised, just be careful as it may break. I might try the wired one after the guy who originally posted about it said get the wireless black one for some reason =S

@Razgri - your issue is due to an Xbox system update which blocked the Wildfire from working. If you update the controller using Datel's website it will work fine again.

I think its crazy how people are like "Oh, I don't have 10 hours to do this boosting" and then complain when it cuts off at 9 hours. Wow. From a independent designer, well done sir. This is a great alternative to boosting campaign and I applaud you for it.

Any idea when this achievement pops? Is it when you hit level 100 the second time? Or when you re-up like the first achievement. I just want to make sure it has a time stamp.

It pops when you go to the menu screen and press X to re-up again.

Well, I've gotten the positioning of the "weapon switcher" down (has to be pretty far into the corner), but I'm having trouble with my ghost cam drifting away from the weapon switcher overnight (when I wake up, it's not aimed towards the weapon and I'm not getting any spots). Has anyone else experienced this? It might be my Hori. I'm only getting like 100,000 exp a night.

Yep. It happens to the Hori controller after about 2 - 3 weeks worth of time of regular use.

^ That's pretty lame... ironically, the only time that this method actually worked and I got like 1,000,000+ exp was when I was already level 96 (when working on my first re-up), so a lot of it was wasted. Oh well, I'll get there eventually.

Yea, well, the best way to do it is when you go eat dinner or do something quick on the internet. That way you get about an hour in, and then you check back, fix it, and get another hour in, etc...

For anyone experiencing what FuzzedUpCookie mentioned above, for whatever reason the ribbons stopped appearing after the first time doing this. It still earned experience for them, though, as I did a short trial run and went from 90 to 91.

To unlock the Friendly Fire mutator, you need to complete the campaign in 4 player co-op.

I did that noise a decade ago. I'm not doing it again. :(

XP in public matches is greatly increased now. I was averaging 100k per match of Guardian in standard versus.

Considering this is most likely to take A LOT of time, there is a high chance of you accidently getting reset at some point since there are probably a million different ways to get reset in Gears. Call me stupid now but it happens to a ton of people because they accidently quit games at wrong times ETC. Believe me, you are going to want to backup your player save every now and then. Below is how to do it.

1. Use USB or cloud storage. I feel that USB is a lot easier.
2.Launch Gears and instead of choosing where you normally save your Gears file, choose your alternate device. (USB or Cloud).
3. Now you should have your original rank on there with all your ribbons, stats, medals and everything.
4. Start a private 1 round warzone match against bots.
5. Playthrough the match really quick, this makes the game save your file.
6. From there you are done! If your rank ever gets reset just startup the game from this file and you will have your rank back on the Gears of War servers!
7. If you want to re-backup your file then just delete your backup player save on your alternate storage device and repeat the steps!

Only requires 6 people total, as long as they have extra controllers for bots.

Go into King of the Hill Quick Match and search until you get a bot match and then have the other guys join. If the host has a moderate NAT there's a 50/50 shot of getting into a bot match, as illustrated by the last bunch of games I played, we got bot matches very often because of that.

After you actually get situated in the match, do the King of the Hill ring dance that you know from Gears of War 2 where one team sits in the ring doing nothing and the other repeatedly breaks the ring all at the same time. One team gets one round and another gets the other round, the first team gets the overtime match and the win. Team 2 starts the next match and so on and so forth.

I say social instead of ranked because in ranked there is a glitch where roughly half the people WILL NOT get any XP or to a lesser extent ribbons for the match. Stay away from Ranked King of the Hill, this happened over several matches where different people wouldn't receive any XP or ribbons, even after dashboarding, even though they got XP in private and social.

My group averaged 860,000 XP per match when on the winning side so it will take a max of 6 games for both teams to Re-up (without randoms or errors of course).

I can't stress enough to stay away from Ranked when doing this, had a couple wasted games because of it.

I can certainly attest to the not getting XP glitch in ranked KOTH. Social works great but for the occasional bot.

Not this method, no, you'll have bots running around actually playing. You can do the re-up, I believe, offline.

Another way to level up pretty quickly is doing Guardian. Takes 6 players minimum with 4 players having a 2nd controller signed in as Guest. Just by getting 15 kills in a match (3 leader kills and 12 other kills gives you over 100,000 XP,

What I did to set it up is to have you and 2 others in your lobby in the menu, both having a Guest signed in. Then we searched for a match and most of the time, we get put into a bot match, a few times we get put in a match with a random or two. I prefer getting a bot match rather than finding a match filled with randoms that will just make this method a lot harder.

Once you have your match up, you will need your other 3 players to join in on the other team. This is where it gets tricky, most of the time you can't find each other in groups, so what we did was have all 3 other players to search and hope 1 of them will find us. Once one of them actually gets put into your match, quickly have that person invite the other 2 players to take up the lobby. If a random happens to join before the other 2 join the invite, kill the leader on the random's side, then kill the random. After that, move around and have fun without killing until the random decides to leave. When you get both sides filled with the right players, you're ready to boost.

The way we did XP boosting is make sure that if you have 2 players going for XP, have them both on opposite sides, leave the leaders alive, and kill the other 3-4 players that are not the leader or the players going for XP. If the players going for XP happen to be the leader, that makes more kills each time, making it easier, but I wouldn't waste time trying to get them to be leader to get more kills. Getting 150-200 kills in a round will give about 800,000 - 1,000,000+ XP, so you can get 5,000,000 XP per match with 5 rounds.

IMPORTANT: Make sure the players with a Guest controller move their main controller to avoid being removed from the match. Players with 1 controller only also need to move to avoid being removed from the match.

If you have any questions, feel free to message me. If you down vote this, please let me know why so I can fix any problems. Good luck to you all!

I'm wondering, TweeHaddock4749, did you do this solo or with a guest signed in.. and the guest on the other team? How did that work four you? And what's the timer per round?
