How to unlock the Momma Said I Can't Die achievement in Gears of War 4 - Definitive Guide

If you have completed this prior to the update and all your solo chapters have been marked as complete prior to the update then this will unlock. However to get it to do so you need to complete 1 chapter on inconceivable to get it to pop. Best and easiest method is select solo campaign, select chapter and the select Act 3 Chapter 1. Make sure it's set to inconceivable. This chapter is a 5 minute walkthrough with no enemies to kill or be killed by. As soon as the cut scene loads up at the end the achievement will pop.

If you are not sure if you have completed everything on solo just go into select chapter and check through the 5 Acts. If everything is completed you will have the inconceivable logo under solo which is a skull with three daggers behind it in silver and red colours.

UPDATE

It has been confirmed that if you play on inconceivable with a coop player on casual this still counts towards solo progress as well as coop. You will most likely have to restart the game to get it to update the solo progress but it does still work. This way the player on casual does all the work whilst the player on inconceivable can take cover. Support for this game is pretty much shelved and the coop/casual/higher difficulty method has worked on numerous gears games so it is probably safe to say this is unlikely to ever get patched.

Both my coop partner and myself did the casual/inconceivable cheese for solo credit, and it still works as of today.

Confirmed this can still be done in Co-op using player 2 on casual and player 1 on Inconceivable. Though I highly recommend changing the difficulty for player 2 to Insane during Act 3: Chapter 2 to get the Memori Mento as this was very helpful against some tricky Pouncers, Carriers, Snatchers and the Swarmak. At the end of my Co-Op run I had a look at my chapter progress and it showed all chapters were complete on Solo and Co-Op on Inconceivable EXCEPT for the last act. After going to the dashboard and quitting out of Gears 4 and then re-opening it, my campaign progress showed Inconceivable complete on all Acts and Chapters Solo and Co-Op. All I needed to do was walk through Act 3 Chapter 1 on Inconceivable Solo and as soon as the cut scene with the tattered flag began the Momma Said I Can't Die achievement popped

I can confirm that the Co-Op to Solo glitch still works as of March 9 (After the March 2018 update).

I can't speak for games over LIVE, but I did the entire campaign in split-screen with a guest account on Casual and my main account on Inconceivable. I quit to the main menu a couple times in Act III, Chapter 2, in order to change my guest account's difficulty to insane in order to acquire the Memento Mori easter-egg boltok for my main account, and then again to load the subsequent checkpoint and put my guest back to casual. The quitting and reloading had no adverse effect on my progress.

Once the credits started to roll, "Inconceivable!" popped (along with "Pick Me Up", which isn't too bad to do in a run like this either), and I quit back to the main menu. After booting my guest, I checked my solo progress via Campaign -> Solo -> Chapter Select, and at this time it still showed my highest solo progress as Insane. I then quit the game via the guide button -> highlight the game, reloaded, returned to solo chapter select, and all were marked for Inconceivable. Then I just ran through Act III, Chapter 1, as quickly as possible, and the achievement popped on the cut-scene that shows a tattered flag in a courtyard.

Sorry for the novel, but I was in a session a couple days ago in which a participant stated that this no longer works, but I wanted to confirm that it does indeed still work, at least in my local split-screen experience.

Probably because it counts as being played solo too, the thing is, probably it won't unlock at the same time. I've played before update on co-op inconceivable, all of them counted as solo too, just had to play a chapter on solo and unlocked it. My friend still need this so we will help him, and I will update this later.

Pretty sure a prior inconceivable save is required. Now if you play coop it does not count towards a solo chapter completion.

I'm trying to run through coop on inconceivable/casual in my pre-patch game while beeing offline.
So far it only counts as completed in coop. Some guys say it took some time (about 24hrs) for them to get credit for solo. As i am forced to play offline (to avoid the patch) i am afraid that the solo progress will not update at all... :(

Yeah, it was HARD. Took me many tries. The key was to watch where the barrels were falling, not after they landed. Also, some people recommend shooting them before they landed. I was just terrible at that, so I focused on dodging.

@Jay Insomniak

Thanks for the info, I have disabled automatic updates after the TU in case they decide to patch it. For you to count it as solo, were you the host on incon or the ,,joinee" on incon? Just asking because some forced events (like the bikes and plane) are ridiculously hard when the host is on incon.

Me and my friend have finished yesterday, after the TU, the first 2 acts with him on incon and me on casual, but his progress still shows coop only...

For co-op/split screen players trying to get this - If this doesn't pop after your playthrough, make sure all solo completions are updated(dashboard quit as others have said). If it fails to update , just beat that chapter again and try to update it again to see if that works. Then go back and beat the final checkpoint and you should get it. It happened to me on one of the chapters for some reason where it failed to update solo completion and I didn't get the achievement at the end. Doing the above fixed the issue.

To be fair beating the game on Inconceivable solo is a cake walk (except the plane which is maddeningly difficult, but doable and the final boss) provided you pick up Dom's Memento Mori Boltok Pistol.

By I am Gozer24 on 10 Dec 2017 10:27
Idk I found the plane to be quite easy. Only took about 4 tries. I feel like it isn't as optimized for the difficulty as the rest of the game (other than two flame hits killing you), I mean the amount of turret fire you can take is surprising. The only issue with the end boss is your AI partner getting too close resulting in you taking splash damage when you're shielding from the projectiles.angry

The rest of the game is definitely harder than those parts. I've never used the Memento tho so I could be wrong but damn you die so fast on Incon.

I finished it coop splitscreen (offline without the latest TU) and the progress showed inconceivable done in coop for ALL chapters and solo for NONE.
After updating the game i checked my progress (while beeing online) and it showed inconceivable done solo except for chapters 2-1 until 2-3; 4-5 and all of act 5. Redid all of them in splitscreen online and after shutting down the game all of them updated to beeing done in inconceivable solo. I did a quck run of chapter 3-1 inconceivable solo and the achievement popped :)

TLDR: It makes no sense doing it offline to avoid the TU. As many others have confirmed before it works even with the latest title update ;)

So right now (January 8th) the Co-Op method still works, but it now has an added factor of difficulty. You have to complete the chapter without dying in order for it to count for solo. I’m not 100% sure this is the case, but I just completed the first 4 chapters of act 1, and only 2 of them counted for solo (I backed out and quit out of the game multiple times, but it doesn’t give me credit for completing it solo). The 2 chapters I didn’t get progress for, I died multiple times, while the two chapters that did count, I didn’t die once. If someone could confirm this, that would be great.

By Triple Triad777 on 09 Jan 2018 00:18
Hi Triple,

I am not sure if that is the case. I just completed it yesterday doing the 2nd controller method. I died multiple times during the wind flairs, the final boss, a few times on the snatcher, carrier, the elevator to hell, and a few other spots. Everything did count as both solo and co-op for me though it did take time for the solo part to come up as others stated would be the case. I would usually wait about 20 min, exit the game, come back in and the solo stuff was updated.

I did have to do the one act on inconceivable solo after to get the solo acheevo. I did 3-1 as recommended above. Popped right after.

I did Act 4 with a friend last night with me on inconceivable and him on casual and I only got Co-op credit for inconceivable - NOT solo.

This after we had done the same thing for Acts 1 to 3 pre-update for which I DID get Solo credit as well as Co-op.

So it may have been patched (or we may have just been unlucky - xbox live was a little funky yesterday). Can anyone else confirm?

Cheese coop method still works as of February 19, 2018. When you have beat the whole game on coop inconceivable make sure to replay one chapter on inconceivable solo to get the solo achievement to pop. Do this chapter on act 3, chapter 1.

Also, to get each level to register, when you are done for the day, completely exit out of the game (on the Xbox menu press start on the game and quit out). Then reload gears 4 and the game should show your progress for solo and coop as inconceivable. Also remember that you must have beaten the game on insane to unlock the inconceivable difficulty.

Can confirm you can still play through the campaign split screen with your guest account on Casual. For whatever reason, it will count as both Solo and Coop doing it this way. At the end, the achievement didn’t pop as a couple of chapters didn’t log as having being completed on Inconceivable. I re-did those two chapters using the split screen method. Then, finally, did Act 3 Chapter 1 on Solo.

Hey Frizbog, yeah I saw your video a few times. I just keep grinding it out and maybe I will get lucky with the dodging of fire patches :(

@Epilepsy: No. Just tried this and can verify that without a finished inconceivable playthrough, you cannot get the cheevo yet.

Yurgi Windu you legend!!!!

I can confirm that i have only completed the campaign on incon on co op only. I had loaded up Solo Act 3 Chapter 1 on Incon difficulty and just got my achievement!! Along as you have finished it on co op you should be able to unlock this right now before a patch happens. This trick has saved me so much time!!

Can provide another confirmation that this works. Had only completed Inconceivable on coop previously. I loaded up that endgame checkpoint (the Inconceivable one) and used the helicopter blades to cut up the final boss. Achievement unlocked in 10 minutes.

I just unlocked the achievement having done no Inconceivable before the TU. Everyone get to popping before they find a way to patch this!smile

These are the chapters I did legit solo during my playthrough 2.4 (Bikes and plane boss), 3.1 (5 mins of walking), and 5.4 (Final boss). I "quit" the game (dashboard) before doing the final chapter because I had a feeling that's what updated solo progress and it did. After completion I popped both Inconceivable achievements.

Coop method still works as of 23/12/2017. Finished the campaign in local coop, playing with guest controller on casual. You need to quit (close it, just dashboarding won't close the game, just pause it) the game for the solo inconceivable to register (xbox button, highlight GoW4, press the ,,hamburger" button and quit the game).

Replay Act 3 - Chapter 1 on Inconceivable and voila, achievement pops.

Thanks for the useful feedback guys.

P.S.: Pickup the Memento Mori Boltok (described in Insane/Inconceivable solutions). It made this game MADDENINGLY easier. One hit killing Swarmak really saved my sanity after my Insane playthrough without the Boltok. You can also one hit melee them, I used that on all Scions and Pouncers.

Just did the 2 controller method on act 2 chapter 4 the great escape. My main account was on inconceivable, sec9nd controller was on casual. After I had completed the chapter I checked to see the progress and it only said that I had coop done on inconceivable. I closed the game and reloaded it and it registered as solo and co-op. So I can confirm that this still works as of Feb 3 2018

I can confirm that this method still works as I've done nothing since my previous post where I only got coop inconceivable credit and I've just loaded my main account by itself and have bolth solo and coop inconceivable for the same progress that I made b4. Will try to split screen it since it would be simpler to control bolth accounts and edit this comment when I gather the information whether that works just as well

Update

Split screen works fine got bolth solo and coop though you'll have to quit the game and restart the xbox for it to register solo progress. This method will be faster since you won't have to do it twice like you would if you had an actual person but there will be some points where you have to get another person to help out. Good luck

As some who completed this solo, and LEGIT, let me tell you that the word 'inconceivable' rings absolutely true here.

Previous guides emphasize using the 'co-op' method with main host being on Inconceivable and hanging back, while the second controller/guest player does all the dirty work on casual difficulty. Well, I'm here to give some guide to attempting this solo, LEGIT!

First off, you have to beat the campaign on Insane first before attempting Inconceivable. Now, I'm here to tell you that with a FEW exceptions, the Inconceivable run is actually easier than Insane in most parts for two reasons but simultaneously more aggravating as well: You have far less health than previous runs, but the enemies also have less health as well. You also get less ammo from ammo crates and from dropped weapons laying on the battlefield. So be wise with ammo and scavenge ammo from dropped enemy weapons and make sure your guns are as full as possible. Also trade weapons with AI allies when it's safe to do so.

Overall, I'd say this is more of a 'strategic' run and that it is easier in the sense that enemies aren't bullet sponges like they are on 'Insane'. However it takes far less damage to kill you so be very careful, especially during act 3. Also, you must make sure your shots count and hit your enemies too. They don't soak up bullets anywhere near as much as on Insane but they can easily mow you down with far fewer shots than even Insane so it's a very, very thin line between being moderately difficult and agonizingly nightmarish. It's your call.

USE EASTER EGGS!

The same easter eggs I mentioned in my guide for the Insane run apply here: Get Dom's Tomatoes and the Memento Mori but use them wisely! The former, I'd recommend holding onto until you get to the graveyard and use them to close up e-holes and limit how many enemies spawn. Then, shoot the gravestones in the correct order spelling MA-R-I-A and if it doesn't glitch, the scenery should turn very foggy and a heartbreaking audio clip of Dom contending with Maria being unable to be saved. After the gunshot is heard, a picture of Dom and Maria will fall to the ground and you'll pick up the Memento Mori.

As mentioned, you get 18 rounds, PERIOD and you cannot refill the Memento Mori so use the bullets wisely. You can instagib melee enemies to conserve ammo, even Pouncers (Be very careful doing this) when they're on one of your AI allies. I even managed to instagib a Snatcher who was in the middle of swallowing one of my AI allies though I'd be very, very careful about doing this. I mostly limited the use of ammo to against Carriers, the Swarmak, Dropshot Scions, and Snatchers when they swallow one of my AI allies.

That said, there are some extremely nightmarish areas that gave me rage-filled periods of grief: The Motorcycle section involving bringing down the plane, much of Act III, and the final boss.

MOTORCYCLE CHASE:

The motorcycle section, do your best to avoid as many potholes as you can. If you have poor reaction time, you can do the pause trick method to see where the potholes may be and prepare to move accordingly. When you shoot the two engines and they explode, the plane doesn't go down right away. Keep shooting the damaged engines and eventually, they'll go out altogether. Then take out the turrets (They're almost tinfoil weak by comparison), and the finally take out the engine core, being mindful of debris and incendiaries falling out the cargo door. Also try to line up with the propeller when it digs a 'pothole' in the ground and stay roughly behind it at all times as doing so will keep you from hitting the ruts created by the blades. Once the engine core is destroyed and the plane goes down, you're all good.

ACT III:

Now for Act III, when you get to the Museum part, just try to kill as many enemies as possible when the teammates are using the turrets but when there are just a few or even one left, run back to the entrance you came from and when the Juvies arrive, they'll funnel down the stairs and if you're equipped with a Gnasher or even using the instagib melee with the Memento Mori, you can deal with the Juvies relatively easily.

If the AI don't go down on the third part with more drones, and you take care of remaining Juvies, this can be completed. It's still very hard and it's very easy to screw up and ruin it all.

The fourth part of Act III "Do Not Go Gentle" is probably the hardest part of the entire game, even with the Memento Mori as various rooms have pods on the ground that you can use as cover but be very wary of popping them as they could cause Juvies to spawn. Even worse, sometimes a loud shriek can be heard and all of the pods burst spawning an army of Juvies!

Finally, you'll face a combination of Pouncers and Juvies in the final room. This is where I first used the Memento Mori and killed all three pouncers, while either dodging or running in circles on the outside of the room, and funneled the Juvies so me and AI teammates killed them with gnashers, and/or lancers.

The final part, and probably the most grief-inducing area is the final boss, the Hive Mind on the final part of act V, known as "Release". I don't want to lie to you, this is hands down the area I had the hardest time with.

Part I/Flying pods: The first part involves pods erupting from the ground, and then flying right at you. Do your best to figure out the patters they spawn and as they open up, shoot them in the right sequence so they're taken out before they hit you. Just two or three hits are fatal. If you can take them out and not die, eventually, you'll reach the second and the hardest and most infuriating part of the entire fight.

Part II/Tentacles: Be prepared to die a lot, a LOT attempting this. First off, when he/she rises from the ground and his/her tentacles erupt, try to get as far back as possible and shoot at the tentacles, and land your shots as best as possible. Now the hard part is timing it to dodge the quills he/she shoots at you. He/she seamingly completely ignores the other mech that's with you and who sometimes actually blocks your path (Seething in anger), so would get as far back as possible. It makes it easier to dodge the quills though it makes it slightly harder to land shots as accurately. As usual, when a tentacle goes down, head up to it, and hold Y to staple it, cause it to break, and then when the ripped remains are withdrawn in, summon a rocket strike using LB to hit the tentacle crater and seal it permanently. Do this with the other three and then you're done.

Part III/ Severing the legs: This part isn't quite as bad as the previous part. First, you must tear the rotor blades from the downed helicopter and use it as a 'shield' against the pods launched from the Hive Mind's chest cavities. You must time it so the blades go full speed. He/she will fire three sets of pods at you. Make sure the chopper blades shred all three sets. Then advanced up, using RB to cool the rotor down. Then rinse and repeat with pods and when close enough, he/she will roar and attempt to stomp you. If you can get out of the way and not be killed, by the leg, you then use the Y-Button and sever the leg. Repeat this for the other one and when he/she falls down, just press Y and hold, and JD Fenix then slices the Hive Minds head and killing it once and for all!

Once that's done, you're all done! Then once the credits roll, the achievement will unlock! Show it off to your friends, and taunt your gamer foes. If you did this solo, you have earned bragging rights to this.

Good luck to all who have the bravery to attempt this. To those who did the 'cheese' method, I totally understand. To those who managed to beat this without Dom's Tomatoes or Memento Mori, my full hats off to you.

First, go through the campaign in co-op on unbearable (one player on easy and the other on unbearable), and then to get this achievement you need to go through the prologue for someone who was not the host, and for the one who was the host just load the last save and go to the end( If there is no save, you deleted it or overwrote another one, then go through the last chapter). But this will all work if you have completed the campaign on Unbearable

Several levels will cause difficulties, but especially the last boss when he shoots from the tentacles, I advise you to practice jumping on the easy level (on the unbearable level he takes out the 1st hit) there is no room for error, ideally you need to understand how he shoots at you, the line runs on the tentacles He has one that allows you to understand at what moment you need to jump away! I suffered for 4 hours on this boss, not to mention the difficult places earlier! In general, please have a lot of patience as this level is very difficult! Good luck
