The following method works for most games and will allow you to avoid failing on tricky achievements where a flawless / deathless run is required.

Start your campaign on at least Hardcode mode with ironman turned on. Play through the game in earnest trying not to die. If you do go down/think you're going to die, or die completely press the xbox guide button cn_guide. You'll be sent to the dashboard but the game will still be running in the background.

Goto the game tile and press start, then goto manage game. It is important that you do not quit. Selecting the quit option will sync your local save to the cloud and ruin what you are trying to do.

From the manage game options, go down to Saved Data in the left hand menu. You will most likely see a profile save game and a reserved space. Highlight the profile saved game and press cn_A. You'll get 3 more options. Select Delete from Console. This will remove your local save only.

Don't worry this WON'T interfere with your online progress / xp / classes cards or anything like that. This is purely a local copy of a file that will be synced from the cloud server.

Once you've deleted the file it will automatically quit the game so just start as normal. It will sync the save from the cloud back down to your console.

I would recommend stopping play about every 20 minutes/when you reach a new checkpoint you're comfortable and quitting the game to ensure the save file is synced. That way you won't have to repeat too much of the campaign.

To anyone who is sceptical about this working I would recommend you start a new game and play for a few minutes to get to a new checkpoint, quit the game and allow the save game to sync to the cloud. Start the game up again and continue the campaign, then deliberately die. Use the method described to pull down the cloud save you made earlier so you may continue.

How does this work on co-op? If one of us dies, does this method still work??

By The SCHWARTZ 00 on 11 Jun 2017 02:22
Hey SCHWARTZ 00, in co-op you always have to have one host so you pick the person who is going to keep the same game and follow the same method. Always make sure you invite your partner into that game. If your partner dies, just do the same thing as if you (the host) had died. I would recommend practising the tricky bits
in a different save game so you're prepared for them before hand.

Why should TC patch this? And how? ( except of removing checkpoints ) They couldn't care less about the campaign compared to Horde and MP. And this is something that only Microsoft can patch this, since It works for almost every game...

im doing hardcore ironman mode solo at the moment, i died at the part where you use the bulldozer to move the yellow stones and then the snatcher arrives, the snatcher killed one of my AI and i just pressed the power button and switched off the xbox one, when i put it back on it was back at the start of the snatcher part, i got lucky with that.

What about both player on hardcore? Will we both get achievement?

By ReAl ImPuLsE on 12 Jun 2017 22:01
yes you will, but its as a result of stacking on the other achievement. As long as your host does a valid restore and invites you into the session as before i.e not triggering any new checkpoints without you, it will work.

By Muzzily on 12 Jun 2017 22:11
Beware, I haven't been able to confirm this myself yet, but if an AI player dies, it will let you restart from the last checkpoint, BUT... you will not longer be playing in ironman. So if that happens, you may want to dashboard and delete your local save, even though it seems like it is letting you continue.

I would like to point out that if you are too slow and fail to press pause in time after someone dies and the red menu appears you don't have to worry using this method it will still not count as a death.

just finished it on hardcore ironman solo, it's more nerve wracking than hard, in fact i only died in 2 places with the snatchers taking the AI hostage as i couldn't shoot them in time.

when i died i didn't quit the game i just pressed the power button on the console and switched off at the plug, i then started the game up and i was back at the start of the battle in question, still on hardcore and ironman mode.

im not sure if it will work in co-op, but apart from the snatchers i wasn't in any real danger, you just get nervous thinking you will die.

I'm just wondering if anyone having this problem using this method. Every odd time I've done this it will not really say i'm on ironman even though i've done the same steps as I've done before and it'll says ironman. Me and my friend had notice that if you stayed to late in a part there is a chance of it auto update to the cloud but for ones that's a few seconds both of us are completely lost.

I'm not sure I'm really following what your issue is. Some people have reported that if the AI dies, the ironman setting is lost. If this happens the only recommendation I have is to delete your local copy and resync from the cloud server at soon as this happens. But that's not really a problem with my method, more the game mechanics.

so we kinda figure it out but if anyone wanna confirm it. After doing the steps to clear your data on your conceal hit the home button to bring out the side screen and go to the game straight away that way and do not back out and go from the home page.
Another one we had notice too is that if you are repeating the same area best to back out at a point then go back in cause it had cancel it a few times for us cause we couldn't get past the bikes part so easy a few times and it would suddenly say we don't have ironman.

It works for coop. Just let the host do exploit, have the other wait and inv them. Then just continue.

Thanks for the feedback FUNKYCOLDM3DIN4.

After experimenting myself, trying to get the ironman mode to turn off, I have come to the conclusion that it simply comes down to player error. If you die and return to menu, you can continue your game but not in ironman mode. This is by design of the developers. If the AI dies, unfortunately this counts as a death, so again you can return to menu, but ironman mode will be turned off. If you go down and it starts a death cutscene (e.g juvie head bash or scion head crush) again, it will turn ironman mode off. In short, any death will result in the loss of ironman mode, just like the game mode instructs it will. So if in doubt, delete your save locally and resync from the cloud.

Yeah it didn't work for me. I died on 1-2 and just as the screen came up that I died. I pressed the guide button and pressed start on the picture of Gears 4 on the dash. I went to my profile and deleted the save game. Then I started back the game to continue the game and it says that ironman it off. What gives? I followed it exactly as it says above?

I wouldn't recommend that as your xbox is essentially a pc in a box and as such, is sensitive to rapid change in electrical current. But you are correct though, powering off everything instantly would stop the sync from occurring, My best advice is still to pause and delete the save if you get into trouble and you think you're going to die. Going down on hardcore is a good pre-cursor for this. The sync can occur immediately after dying so my advice is be vigilant and take your time. Waiting an extra 30 seconds to complete a section is far better than having to restart from scratch.

Do both players have to be on Hardcore?

By PhantomEwan on 21 Feb 2018 00:43
No both players don't need to be on hardcore. In my experience unless you know the campaign extremely well you'll save time overall by having one of the players on casual. You can then swap over and play the campaign again so that you both have the achievement.

Can you use chapter select with this I.e. do act 1 and then quit out and then do act 3 etc in any order? Or do you need to start a fresh game?

By Akiraa20 on 08 Apr 2018 20:59
from memory you can't do this you have to start a fresh.

However you can join someone else's game mid way through and the chapters will count towards your progress.

I have tried this and it is working to an extent but when I die it's making me replay an entire act. I died on the motorcycle and it's making me replay from act 2 geared up. Am I doing something wrong?

How much you have to replay will depend on how frequently the save is syncing to the servers. If you know you are struggling to get past certain points , I recommend you quit and close the game, this will force a sync. Then continue as you have been.

I'm doing this right now and I got up to 4-1 but have an issue. Marcus disappeared and I have no way to go forward. I so don't want to start over if I have to. Is this know to happen? If it is I think I'll just go and do it on coop.

I've been thinking about this - wouldn't it be just as effective (and easier) to simply power off the Xbox One at the plug when a death occurs? It's the 'Quitting' that causes the local save to sync to the cloud, right? So powering off at the plug should prevent this from happening.

I have found a way to back up your save in case you need to roll back to an earlier act or chapter. This is helpful if your game bugs out (Act III Snatcher) or your Ironman gets turned off by accident on your current save. For this to work you need a 2nd Xbox.

I invite you try this out yourself before you get serious. For me it worked every single time I tried it even though I did not end up needing it because we got lucky (savegame stayed valid for the entire run).

Step 1: On First Xbox - Save game as you would normally. Exit the game and shut the Xbox down. Probably not necessary but I did it anyway in order to be a 100% sure it works correctly.
Step 2: On 2nd Xbox - Start up Gears. It will sync the save from the Cloud. Awesome! You're done for now. I now shut the 2nd Xbox down and disconnected the network. Again, not necessary but I wanted to play it safe.

Alright, now let's say are back to your first Xbox and messed up on your save and need to roll it back.

Step 1: Make sure at least 1 day has passed between the Backup save on the 2nd Xbox and the save on the first Xbox. When I didn't do this it just overwrote the sync I had on the 2nd Xbox.

Step 2: Load up the game on your 2nd Xbox. You will be getting a notification that the game is syncing with the cloud. It is now that you will be getting a popup telling you that the save in the cloud and the save on your Xbox are different. It will also list the date/time difference between the two saves.

Choose the local save. It will now sync the backup save file back up into the cloud. Nice!

Step 3: Back on your 1st Xbox, delete your local save before starting up the game to be safe. In theory this is not necessary as the game will ask you the same thing as in Step 2.

* * *

Once you start up the game now you should have rolled your savegame back to what you had on your 2nd Xbox. Ironman should be ON again and you can continue your grand adventure. Good luck!

Please let me know if you got any questions or further insights regarding this mehod.

didn't work for me , always overwrite my old save data

Hi!

Sorry that you seem to be having issues with this. Am I understanding you correctly that you never receive the dialog if you want to keep the old save or use the new save (cloud) instead, it just grabs it from the cloud?

For me this happened when I didn't wait for a day. If the save in the cloud and the local save are both very recent (same day) it will always sync it with the cloud.

Another question: Are your savegames on your Xbox or on an external HDD? Mine are on an external HDD since I ran out of space on my Xbox HDD.

Confirmed that 2nd player on casual and deleting local save if someone ĺincluding AI died) still works as of November 6, 2018.

I did split screen with other 2nd controller on casual untill motorcycle part. Then did rest with online friend. Both this and the legends of sera chievement popped at the end.

Hi, so i'm doing this achievement with my dad over xbox live (online) and he's playing on casual iron man and i'm on hardcore ironman; now here's the thing. He HATES the lightning sections; so is there a way that i can get past them and then reinvite him to my game; it doesn't matter if it's solo for like that one part; same goes for that motorcycle part because that one was a bit of a pain too.

So i'm wondering if I just have to start the co op game and once we get up to that section I'll have him quit out and then i beat it and I can just re invite him and have him select casual once i'm past the lightning/bike sections and I'll still get credit for hardcore ironman right?

Hello all.

I just want to add a small yet inconceivably relevant point of order to the excellent guides already posted. I wish I had known this prior to my iron man run, but oh well.... We glitched now....

READ THIS THREAD TO PREVENT THE IMMORTAL SNATCHER IN ACT III, both CHAP 3 and CHAP 6!

Snatcher Glitch Campaign

Hopefully helps other folks from suffering it.

THIS WORKS BOTH IN SINGLE PLAYER AND COOP.

Abridged version of the thread:

######How to avoid Glitch?######
Act 3 Chapter 3
SinisterPhoenix said:
Very last battle of Act 3 Chapter 3 (Cutscene shows the Snatcher going down into a tunnel in a sinkhole) - The glitch occurs if you do a cloud save once this battle begins. If you don't finish the battle and have to delete the local save and pull from the cloud, this area will show the Snatcher stuck in the tunnel opening and swarm that normally spawn on the left of the map never spawn, thus you cannot complete the objective of eliminating all swarm. After completing the battle at the museum you will move to the next section with a drawbridge to drop and a E-hole or two open up. Complete the battle with the E-holes to trigger a checkpoint. Do not drop the bridge yet. MAKE THIS YOUR CLOUD SAVE! This is the last point in Chapter 3 you can make a cloud save without causing the glitch.
Act 3, Chapter 6
DeceptiveTen said:
The Glitch happens when you jump down into the pit to fight the snatcher and then save your game by going back to the main menu. That's what happened to me, Just save before you get there and by doing so we had no problem. (keep the checkpoint you get after the loader exosuit breaks down)
######How To FIX glitch if you are already trapped and cant proceed with game######

NOTE: All steps are done by HOST
paul greg indy2 said:
So here is a step by step guide according to what we did:
1. load the game (online)
2. HOST lure down the snatcher by letting himself go DBNO (online)
3. let it snatch him into his belly (online)
4. HOST pause the game (online)
5. unplug your internet cable from your console (or if wireless: go to home screen without quitting the game, go to settings tile, network settings, go offline option, then switch back to the game tile) (offline)
6. quickly un-pause (offline)
7. quickly pause again (offline)
8. select restart chapter (offline)
9. after the very first checkpoint (you'll get it immediately after spawn) return to main menu (offline)
10. plug in your internet cable (from now on you're online) and invite coop partner back to lobby if you had one.
11. continue your campaign like normal
///at this point: the game tells you you're on ironman if you're in the main menu
///but in the pause menu it will not say ironman untill you complete at least one checkpoint
