How to unlock the A Diamond in the Rough achievement in Gems of War - Definitive Guide
***Warning***
These "shiny" achievements will be troublesome for a casual player or anyone just playing the game for a quick gamer score boost. This info also applies to the shiny level two achievement.
First off...The game has introduced a pool of cards eligible for shiny tokens. Level one requires five tokens. Level two requires another ten after that. Level three requires another twenty after that. Additional cards are being introduced as "featured troops" which coincide with weekly guild event related specials you purchase with gems (in game currency). For this achievement you need to get five tokens of the same troop for three different troops to put three troops at level one.
Now for the troublesome part. The first thing you need are shiny keys. So far (as of 9/4/2023) keys have only been available in two ways. The primary way is through guild weekly events. The kicker is they are found in high level reward tiers. Using the example of this week's Invasion event. One key is awarded at Stage 10. Two are given for Stage 13. If you can get to Stage 14, it will award you five tokens of the featured troop which is enough to get that troop to level one. Stage 16 offers four more keys. To get to these levels you will need to join a full and active guild because a guild consisting of you and a few of your friends will not be able to score high enough in the reward table to get at these.
The second way to accomplish this is to pay $9.99 for an event "kickstarter". Besides advancing your progress at the start of the event, the bundle comes with five tokens of the featured troop (enough to level one) and four shiny keys. So if you're willing to pay for this on three separate events, you could accomplish this.
In the event you only have keys, you will be subjected to a RNG element. A shiny key has the following breakdown when opening a chest.
50% - Random Token x 1
20% - Random Token x 2
10% - Random Token x 3
10% - Featured Troop Token x 1
7% - Featured Troop Token x 2
3% - Featured Troop Token x 3
Based on this even if you pull enough keys, you odds are not in your favor for getting five of a troop type. So to date the best option (without paying money) is to hit the high level event rewards which give you the five troop tokens.
The game also has a "shiny dust" item which can be used to get shiny chests. However at this time, it is unlikely any one has this because it is awarded for tokens in excess of troop shiny level three.
If you are in a full and active guild, this achievement is quite doable in 3-4 weeks. If not, this may be beyond casual reach unless you are willing to shell out gems to acquire enough sigils to get yourself to the higher reward tiers. I'm hoping at some point, they will add shiny keys to the daily deal rotation or maybe even in the daily challenges. Wishful thinking, but this is clearly a "long haul" achievement by the developer.
