How to unlock the A Friend Indeed achievement in Gems of War - Definitive Guide

Pets can be won in PET RESCUE events or bought for gems in PET RESCUE shops (when a pet rescue event is active)

See the GAMES tab to see when the next pet rescue starts. There are two types of PET RESCUE events:

- a scheduled event - once per week, lasts 24 hours
- a pet gnome event - unlocks for the entire guild for 1 hour only. One of the players in the guild needs to fnd a PET GNOME in PVP (or PVP casual or in ARENA). The gnome drop rate seems to be very low though.

(Only one event can be active at a time, so if you get a pet gnome while another event is active, you only get pet food).

LEVEL CAP

You need 31 copies of the same pet to 'ascend' them to the highest stage where the level cap is 20.

When you spend gems in the PET RESCUE shop, you get a guaranteed number of pets plus a chance to get more. You get about 1 guaranteed pet per 100 gems spent. Tier VII shop reward can be purchased MULTIPLE TIMES. It costs 100 gems and guarantees 1 pet.

This is the list of rewards in the shop:

Tier 1 (costs 25 gems): 1 basket
Tier 2 (costs 50 gems): 2 baskets
Tier 3 (costs 100 gems): 3 baskets, 1 pet guaranteed
Tier 4 (costs 200 gems): 4 baskets, 2 pets guaranteed
Tier 5 (costs 300 gems): 5 baskets, 3 pets guaranteed
Tier 6 (costs 400 gems): 6 baskets, 4 pets guaranteed
Tier 7 (costs 100 gems): 2 baskets, 1 pet guarnteed - can be purchased repeatedly

Baskets contain pet food, jewels or the pet. The pet drop rate in baskets is low, though. Maybe one in five, one in ten.

The safest (not fastest) way to do this would be saving up about +/-3000 gems and then going all out in the pet rescue shop.

The PET RESCUE shop is only accessible during the event! There's no going back one the event is finished.

PET FEEDING:

To level up a pet, you will need pet food, which can be obtained in the following ways:

- crafted at the soul forge (one piece of food costs 1000 souls + 125 precious stones of the specific color)
- bought in pet rescue shops (baskets)
- won in pet rescue
- gained by 'disenchanting' extra pets you don't need - isn't this bizzare - turning pets you don't need to pet food? :-)
- received on some days by logging into the game (see the in game calendar)

Feeding the pet the right color food will give them 100 level points, the universal white food will give them 50 level points and the wrong color food will only give them 10 level points.

Upgrading to level 2 costs 100 level points. Every new level costs 50 lvl points more than the previous one.

lvl 2 - 100 level points
lvl 3 - +150 level points (250 in total)
lvl4 - +200 level points (450 in total)
lvl5 - +250 level points (700 in total)
...
lvl20 - 10450 LEVEL POINTS in total! (if my calculations are correct)

ALTERNATIVE LEVEL 20 PETS
To get a level 20 PET, you can also:

- Get 2500 renown in any underworld faction, this will earn you all the necessary copies of the faction pet.
- Get one in each campaign - you need to buy the Elite Pass (for real money), though, but if you get all the stars, you will get all the copies of the campaign pet by week 10.

@Kugare Because I had 20000 gems to buy the Pets in the shop and 80000 shards for crafting food. Saving resources pays off in the long run.

I had a pet gnome event yesterday morning and can confirm it works the same as the schedule event. Only difference is the 1 hour time limit. Didn’t but all the shop rewards from it though so not sure if the last reward can be purchased multiple times like the schedules event one can

Great guide. I was able to get the pet to level 15, sadly I don't have enough purple food to get it to level 20. cry

Edit: Does anyone know what pets do BTW. I don't understand their purpose.

It cost me about 4,000 gems in all. After getting enough copies to ascend the pet, I was still short of pet food to raise it to 10,450 EXP. Thankfully I've a stockpile of gems. Can't imagine doing this from scratch.

PS: The state of this game now, with all the cash grab achievements.

Great guide, you just need to add something to it. The amount of cards needed isn't the same for each pet. It seems to work the same way levelling up troops work. So green cards will need more total cards than purple cards etc, unless I'm mistaken

31 copies of the same pet is just a fcking joke.
Without 4k gems it's impossible because each week it's a different pet. There are 34 pets atm in game, so if you miss your "main" pet you have to wait.... a long time (for GEMS or for the same pet again)...

Have fun.

Oh, btw you can buy gems for real money $$

@Tenkizuna spot on, mate. I keep playing this game daily for years to stockpile resources for all these cash grab achievements. Coming to a point that enough is enough. I still have around 4,000 gems after spending the 4,000 on this achievement, but enough is enough.

@Neeker, Today I've spent 2300 gems, I need 700 more for the last pets I need, But I can't obtain the last 700 gems without spending money ($) or pray for a random event...

Now, I have to wait months for 3k gems (idk how many we can get each week) so it's a little frustrating :/

edit : ok it's 140 gems each week if you complete the blue task. You need 3000 gems so it's 22 weeks...

@ Tenkizuna I'd just pay cash to get it out of the way if that's the last achievement you need, and then quit the game altogether. I intend to, soon. I don't even feel like doing Raid Boss and Invasion nowadays. Just a waste of gems for very little rewards. I'm doing to help my guild, who has some new players who would probably need those rewards, I suppose.

Finally I have the last 300 gems I need, but I can't go to rescue pet event for buying the last ones that I need.... wow, really ?

Or I missed something ?

The shop on "rescue the pet" is only here during 24 hours ?

@ MarekVit - Thanks for the info. I figured it was a pointless stat boost, but I thought it would give out more than 5% XP. It should at least be 10%.

@ Tenkizuna - It seems the rescue pet events last for only for 24 hours.

Thanks MarekVit for all the advice. At the moment i'm collecting a bunch of souls to bring most of my kingdoms to 3 stars. Collecting the tribute is a good and easy income. I also have around 300 treasure maps in my inventory. I can collect 50+gems in 1 hour with the minigame and i earn enough glory to buy more of these treasure maps. I'll definitelly not earn all the gems i need that way, but at least it's an option if you really have no patience. (of course it's still a waste of time)

My plan so far is to do the weekly pet rescue event until i have enough food to bring one pet to level 20... and hopefully i collect enough guild, event and tribute gems on that way that i'm not too far away from 3k. With a shitload of luck i can maybe find the lucky cat event again, triggered by my guild. In that case i could buy enough pets with 2k. I know it's not very realistic, but who knows?

I don't like the achievement, but with a bit patience it's not THAT bad. And there is really no reason to buy gems for real money. toast

I wish my guild would care that much about pets, because a xbox notification would be so so handy. Without communication it's really annoying to boot up the game every couple of hours just to see if there is an active event. So far i have 60 universal food items and 1500 gems. I'll probably hit the 3k gems before i have the required food. With only 7-8 pets unlocked i don't think i'll find the cat again. Chances are to low. So i have to pay the full price for all copys. *sigh*

I definitely wouldn’t chance it until you have enough gems to complete the pet, I had 11 copies so needed 20 more from exactly 2000 gems I had, which meant I needed at least one pet to drop from a basket.
Luckily I did get 1 in 39 baskets so I got the achievement but I certainly wouldn’t take those odds again.

If you log in once a day and not in a top 20 guild I see this as a pay to win. 3000 gems for pets. Then 1000+ for food. At 500 gems a week from guild. Then subtract the 2 events for the guild that are pay to win. I say its about 8 weeks if you get lucky.

For whomever is going to spend gems in one go to get this achievement: keep in mind that if you have only one copy of the pet, then you will need 3,075 gems to get the other 30 NOT 3,000 (unless you get lucky and find at least one in a basket). It would really suck if you attempt this having only 3K gems and them come up one short.

I feed the pet any food I had available. Then I crafted the correct food to get this achievement. Fortunately I had a bunch of Gems to get the pet achievements.smile I'm surprised not even one percent of the players have this achievement. I feel it will take a long time to do it without using Gems etc. If you have the resources use them you will get them back.

How many coloured pet food do you get from disenchanting extra copies of the pet, once you have upgraded them to the maximum rarity?

It’s very easy to get 31 copies of a pet during a Legends Reborn event, like the one happening now (July 31 to August 13, 2023). The problem is being able to feed it enough pet food to get it to level 20. I used the generic white food to get it to level 15. The problem is I need 45 colored food to get the rest of the way to level 20, and I don’t have any. The bottom line is never spend any colored food to ascend pets initially. Just use the white food until you get to level 15, and save the colored food to go the rest of the way to 20. Now I have to start saving up the colored food or craft it in the soulforge, which I think would be a waste of resources.

Update: once I started acquiring appropriately-colored food for the pet I was trying to upgrade, I was given the option of supplementing it with the white food, so I was able to feed the pet a little bit of each to get to level 20. I would still reiterate to save as much of the six colors of food as possible and use the generic white food as much as possible in the meantime because it's the most plentiful.

I'm glad someone posted a really useful solution. Thanks for that! <3

Can you tell me more about the pet gnome event? How many fights have the event? and at which section can we enter the pet gnome event? is there a popup or how do i know the event is currently active? is there a 100% chance for a pet in the gnome event?

So... with the 11 guaranteed... we need at least 19 copys of the same pet earned via the pet gnome event? O_O
- how is it possible that people already unlocked the achievement?

I used around 800 gems for the cat pet, because i had no idea you can buy the last option for 100 gems as many times as you want. Now i know the best bet is to have the full amount ready to use. I probably screwed myself and i think i need 3k gems as well, because i have no idea how big the chance is to enter the lucky event again. =/

I really don't want to know how many weeks i need to collect the amount... urgh. >_<
well, at least we have the option to buy all needed pets for gems. roll

@General, yeah, you can only buy from the pet shop during the event. So if you want a specific pet, it has to be that pet's event.

Like a lot of the achievements, an active guild is pretty important. During active hours, I normally don't go fifteen minutes between new pet events. Repeat events happen all the time, and I have several pets that are already 1/3 of the way to the needed quantity - and I personally have only found a single pet gnome the entire week.

@Kugare, you probably won't be constrained by pet food. I thought so as well, but by the time you purchase enough Lucky pets you'll probably have enough pet food between his color and the whites you pick up. At least, that was the case for me. The constraint is getting 31 of the same pet.

You can do this achievement without spending ANY gems. Sure it will take a little while but here's a little tip I thought of that I use with my guild. Get the gamertags of all of your guildmates or as many of them as possible and add them all to an Xbox group message. Since guilds can have a max of 30 members and group messages have a max of 31 recipients, it is perfect for this! Basically whenever someone finds a pet gnome and activates it, they post in the group message to notify everyone and whoever is on at the time can get that pet / pet food for that one hour limited event.

Another tip I found out is the following: Let's say someone else in your guild started a pet event but you find a pet gnome while that event is going on. If you were to kill the pet gnome and win the battle, you would only get pet food HOWEVER if you wait until the hour is up and the pet rescue event ends and THEN kill the pet gnome & win the match, you will be able to activate another pet rescue event for your guild!

Using these strategies, I have already found 22 / 36 unique pets and even found some multiple times and got a few copies to ascend/level them higher. Having an active and communicative guild definitely helps a lot for this achievement. If you simply keep doing these pet events, you will eventually get enough copies of 1 of the pets, or if you get really close, you can then decide to use gems on more pet baskets the next time you find that pet event. In fact, ironically, Wednesday is the worst day for getting pets since you are basically limited to the one pet for the whole day. The pet gnome hourly activation ones that can happen any other day MULTIPLE times a day are way better.

MarekVit already posted a very good solution and there is not much i have to add, but i figured something out that should speed up the whole progress. As you probably know, you can't trigger a gnome if you leave the pvp match with the retreat option in your menu. You have to win or lose the pvp match to "roll the dice" for a new chance. You can use this knowledge to your advantage. How?

Well, if you leave a gnome pvp fight with your menu, your not "rerolling the dice" and the next pvp fight is another gnome fight. If you met a treasure or pet gnome is randomly chosen at the start of the fight, but the chance to meet a treasure gnome is much higher. With the possibilty to respawn the gnome, you can leave and reenter a pvp fight until you find a pet gnome. With other words you can change/transform your treasure gnome to a pet gnome.

This method probably get patched in the future. Keep in mind giving this method a shot could end up with losing your treasure gnome reward in worst case.

ScuzzyBunny posted another method in the comment section, it's nearly the same thing, but he suggest to leave the match via dashboard.
Casual pvp, when a treasure gnome spawns press guide button and close game (DO NOT PAUSE AND "RETREAT")...launch game again, choose casual pvp, and the treasure gnome will be there again (or it will have switched to a pet gnome). If its a pet gnome play it out (ensuring you win and dont let him escape), if the treasure gnome is there again, guide, close game, relaunch, and repeat until you get the pet gnome. I did it today and I got the pet gnome on the 3rd launch...but getting the gnome to show up at all took about 50 pvp games.

Aa of today, I can confirm this works. Red gnome turns into green gnome.
Be careful:
1) do NOT re-roll for 50 gold. Keep the same opponents you see right after relaunching.
2) pick same battle before and after closing the game. If you found the treasure gnome on the far right battle (the one that awards 3 trophies for winning) then pick that one every time until it spawns as pet gnome.
3) Could take many many tries but it eventually works. From actually 1 try, to 16. True Story

And it's also true that the gnome may sometimes not respawn back. It's part of the risk but the reward if it works is much higher than 100 souls or 2500 gold

To get a pet to level 20, it is a similar process to levelling up your troops. You need multiple copies of the card to get your pet to the top rank in order to be able to get it to the highest level. To increase a pet’s level, you also need pet food instead of souls, but these are easy enough to obtain from various events that you will probably have enough stashed in your inventory.
The best way to do this is to save up a tonne of gems and when a pet rescue event occurs, buy all the guaranteed pet baskets that you can. This will give you enough to get it to the top rank. Then just use the per food to get it to the top level and you are done!

For this achievement, any pet will work. It doesn't have to be one that you rescued during an event, it could be one you purchased from the shop while the event was active. However, pets you receive will be random and there are two long steps to completing this achievement.

First, you need to ascend your pet to Mythic quality. This is what allows a pet to get to Level 20 (otherwise it is capped lower). You will need 31 copies of the same pet to reach this level. You can get this many simply by purchasing multiple baskets in the event shop, or by getting them as rewards during the rescue events. One last option is to maximize the renown of an Underworld faction, which will guarantee a reward of 31 pet cards of the same type. See "Exalted" for info on that.

The second step is to actually feed the pet and get it to Level 20. Pet Food can be crafted in the Soulforge, purchased or won during Pet Rescue events, disenchanting pet cards (basically grinding them up for food...), or as log-in rewards in the main game menu (check your mail). Each pet have a favorite color of food which will provide 100xp, normal white food will provide 50xp, and any other color will only give 10xp. You will need a total of 10450xp to max out a pet.

See this FAQ for more info on Pets.

If you regularly go through Pet events (both planned and short-term), then there will be no problem with food for the little ones. The problem with this trophy is that you must first collect the 31st identical pet (for example, Mimimimik) and then raise it to the maximum. And fatten up for the last time.
How to get as many identical pets:
- 1st option (without diamonds). We are going through events with pets more often. For one event (8 battles) they give from 1 to 3 pets. The number of identical ones gradually accumulates. But since there are so many different pets in the game, the process can drag on... for years.
- 2nd option. Not fast either, but much faster than the previous one. We save 3175 diamonds (this is the maximum amount. Minus 100 diamonds for each pet of the same type received in battle/baskets). During the event (for 8 battles) we get from 1 to 3 pets. We buy the rest needed before 31 right away (you need to make it before the end of the event - pay more attention if it is short-term) through the Store tab inside the Pet Events menu. Then go to the Military menu - Pets. We raise the purchased pet to the maximum and then fatten it up to level 20. ready !!!
2250 diamonds can be bought for a donation, but the price is super-ungodly, and it’s still not enough!!!.... So it’s better to accumulate the necessary diamonds by simply playing the game:
- We develop kingdoms, collect tribute (including diamonds)
- We upgrade the 1st statue of the Guild with gold, these are diamonds for ourselves and all our guild members. A week later - repeat.
- We complete daily tasks for diamonds, they are quite simple. If the reward of a task is not diamonds, once a day you can change the task to another one, possibly more diamond-rich!
- In the Events menu, go to the 2nd tab (Event) and look at the very last item there - for which you get weekly green Event Pebbles. We actively participate in this matter and receive quite a lot of diamonds (150). We repeat next week.
- Mini-game Treasure Search. They also give diamonds, but very little...
- We get it from chests, sometimes we get it as a reward for battles

Since in any case the trophy is quite expensive, it is better to spend diamonds on a pet that will bring real benefits (being equipped on the Hero’s shoulder) to both the hero and your favorite team. Those. wait for the event for the pet you need, and only then spend blood diamonds. I have a Dragon Guardian, a team of Dragons, so I waited for the event for the pink dragon Virmushka, and put everything into it. Although I still play with Mimimimik, with him they give more gold for any battles with the Hero.

The fastest way to get and level up a pet is to gain maximum fame from any faction.
For 2500 fame you will just get 31 pets, and you can raise them to level 20
