This is gotten through regular play; just keep unlocking chests of any kind through keys or the various currencies. Joining an active guild will essentially give you a decent amount of keys daily.

I haven’t signed into this game for a long time, in fact it’s not even installed on my Xbox anymore. This just unlocked on its own. Anybody else have this happen to them?

See "General" for generic info on obtaining new troops. If you have played consistently since launch (or even intermittently), you should have well over this by now and auto-unlock it when you boot the game up after updating with the most recent patch.
