How to unlock the I Would Walk 20,000 Miles achievement in Gems of War - Definitive Guide

***Caution up front***

This achievement is based around a cash grab by the company. This takes about 3000 gems (in game currency) and high level teams. If you can't field a team to deal with level 600+ enemies, you have no shot at this unless you want to pay money for additional sigils and gems to buff your team. More detail below.

This achievement is for accumulating 20,000 miles in the new Journey event which became available on 11/15/2021. The event is a week long. They provide you with some sigils to start, but nowhere near enough to reach the achievement goal. It is essentially a bad mix of the monthly bounty mission combined with a delve run.

The team available is limited by a type and color. In the first event, the troop type was elemental and the color was green. This color limitation also extends to your weapon choice. Also to be successful you will need the event "captain" (similar to the bounty events). The captain has a new ability called "Pathfinder" which is the third troop upgrade. It offers a mileage multiplier up to x3 for a mythic level troop. The captain for the first run was Hawthorn. Unlike the Bounty events the captain multiplier does NOT stack. Running four Hawthorns will only give you a x3 multiplier.

Here's how the Journey works. Each fight is a fork in the road with two or three battles. Each fight costs one sigil unless you want to pay more for a stat buff (similar to other sigil based events). Enemy level and general type is displayed. Also displayed is how many miles you will win for victory. Occasionally you will see additional symbols for bonus prizes which could include Stat buffs, souls, gold, or glory. In my run, I took the highest level enemy only unless the lower had a stat buff. I ignored all other bonuses. ***Important to note*** Taking more than ten turns or losing troops incurs a mileage penalty. As a result, you need a team which can punch pretty hard. While you could attempt something like a Queen Beatrix looping team, the whittling away of damage could cost you miles in the end. The good news is unlike faction assaults, your team is not fixed and you can change it up between fights.

Now for the cash grab part. I stopped the event at 20,037 points which took 168 battles. Enemies at the end were level 698 having around 700 points for armor and health plus an attack around 360. My team rating was 17,003. Unlike high level faction runs, there is no horde to pump up your stats. Also because the event is only a week long, you can't take months working up. While ravens were fairly plentiful, I still only finished with 20 extras. So basically your only hope is buy all the potions. As an added FU to the players, the tier seven potion runs 500 instead of the normal 200 associated with a faction assault. So it takes 1850 gems to get through tier seven. Then on top of that I had to do two more tier sevens to have enough sigils to make 20k miles. That means you'll need just under 3000 gems to even have a shot.

I have serious doubts about regular successes for certain troop types and colors. Many first position enemy troops have armor so you have to deal with that. By the time you hit the upper limits, you have enemies that can kill one of your troops in 2-3 hits (including the shield potion). There are also some teams which have Stealth traits so even if you can negate attack values, you may still have a leading enemy you can't target and gem RNG can do you in....especially with these stupid new multiplier and enchanted star gems. They can power up a mythic enemy in one turn if you're not careful. If you get on the wrong side of a looping team, your match can be over quick.

For my run, I used a variation of the classic Essence of Evil (EoE) team I run in guild wars.

1st position - Essence of Evil
2nd position - The Wild Queen
3rd position - King Gobtruffle
4th position - Hawthorn

I also went with a level 100 Archer class. You can't run Queen Beatrix or Leprechaun due to troop restrictions. Basically EoE was used to nerf the first and possibly second enemy. The Wild Queen did most of the work stealing attack from the enemies. Gobtruffle was ok at the lower levels but useless for attack at the higher levels. At that point I was mainly using him to power The Wild Queen. Hawthorn was useless and was there just for the mileage bonus.

When this goes to other troop types and colors, I recommend talking to your guild mates or looking online for team recommendations. I can almost guarantee they are going to be based off mythic level troops and specific weapon combos. Think upper tier guild war/level 500 delve teams.

Bottom line, this is not an entry level achievement in the slightest. If you can't deal with enemies with the stats I listed above, don't attempt this one until you're in a much better playing position. I have over 3,300 hours into this game and run in a top 25 guild if you want a baseline.

This achievement down right sucks. Barely at 11kish miles.

I don’t have those cards. This is what I’m scraping by with so far.

Thorns blade
Wild queen
Obregonia
Hawthorn

Just in case anyone else is in the same boat. It’s not great but it’s working

Do we know that it has to be in the same event? Could you do 7k miles across 3 different times the event runs?

Based upon the achievement wording and the behavior of other event related achievements, it is likely to be required in a single event.

2 T7s is enough if you use your weekly sigils aswell, I am at 19K and 100% confident I can get to 20K. Never missed a raven and lost only 3 battles in total thus far.
As far as teams go Bogstrider is your friend. It tanks 33% Skull damage, inflicts entangled on skull damage, and depending on your magic can be a great mana generator aswell at a mana cost of only 8.

Bogstrider
Doomed Glaive/EoE
The Wild Queen
Hawthorn

Class Archer

Good luck y'all

Btw I wouldn't call it a cash grab. You can save up enough Gems for this without spending a single dime. Its just a Gems grab.

With the 10 mile penalty you incur if you go over 10 rounds, I am wondering if it's better to go with the easier battles so as not to increase the difficulty and get hit with the penalty. You will likely earn less miles, but not significantly less by my estimate.

Wait, if you choose the lower option, it doesn’t increase the enemies level?

So if I was at like 350 for 20 miles and 351 for 30 miles, and I did the 20 miles, it will stay at the 350 always? If that’s the case might be worth to do it once you get to a breaking point or close to one.

Here are the patch details: https://gemsofwar.com/6-0-update/

Players will be presented with a choice of paths to take and battles to fight. Harder battles will be worth more Miles, but will cause future encounters to increase in level faster.
The level increases, but not as fast. To be honest I haven't kept an eye on it to see how much they go up.

Yeah future me to update. Shifted towards the lower one after you mentioned the idea.

Legit the best route to take. The only time I went to the higher one was if it yielded a bonus stat boost or the 75 mile one. It just seems to me the battles are easier going despite the enemies you fight. Felt like I plowed through my starting point of like 11.5 to 18.2k tonight very easily. It will take more battles but not as many that wouldn’t be worth the risk. Only downside is if your unlucky and don’t get enough ravens

Good write-up Jump Joker, I think this achievement will be essentially impossible/missable for vast majority of players given that there will likely only be 1 or 2 more kingdoms in the next few years. I am level 1183 and have hit a wall against Level 400 teams, Level 600 is out of the question unless I dropped tens of thousands of gems on countless Tier 7s. It's not worth it.

Are you still using the same team you listed earlier Uncle Kev? I am trying to resist dropping 4000 diamonds to get Wild Queen. This achievement is going to be crazy expensive.

I've been using Yasimine's Pride to eliminate the enemy's armor, but I am sure I will hit a point where Gobtruffle's damage is just not enough. I just picked up a Spring Imp. I am wondering if the tangle-all spell can help in this case.

This has potential:

Yasimine's Pride (with Titan)
Spring Imp (entangles everyone, has scatter damage & gets +8 magic with every green match)
King Gobtruffle
Hawthorne

It seems like this set up should work out well. If I keep everyone entangled and Titan soaks up some damage, Spring Imp should be able to do some significant scatter damage in a few rounds.

Just got the achievement. At first I used Doomed Glaive as my weapon in the top slot but had to switch to Essence of Evil around 10k or so. Here's the team I used which made it pretty trivial but of course it does involve having 2 mythics (one of which is The Wild Queen and at the time of this writing, is currently in the soulforge and is one of the best troops in the game so definitely grab it if you have the 4000 diamonds!)

Essence of Evil (Warden class- but class shouldn't matter that much)
Sycorax
The Wild Queen
Hawthorn
and the banner is Mushroom Banner (Amanithrax)

Of course, these teams are only good for the first Journey event (green focused troops) and will not be viable for upcoming Journey events.

It may have been accurate to call it a "cash grab" the first time, but it was doable last week with two power potions. The gem cost (can't remember if I paid 1850, 2350, or 2850) is comparable to maxing a faction in a Faction Assault event

This is a great guide except for the complaining about it being a “cash grab”. Whether that’s correct or not it is totally irrelevant for a guide

I am with Jump Joker here.
Last week happened, and I am level 1100.
It took me 170 battles to reach 20k. I lost around 8 of them. Bought Tier VII with gems three times, to get enough sigils and stats.
Around mile 17500 I started to decide which opponents to choose. Checking them and if necessary (based on previous runs), add one extra sigil for 50% bonus, to avoid losing it.
The thing beyond all mentioned here is that the last battles take A LONG TIME. It does not matter if you have good troops or bonuses. For example a couple of troops since they are on a high level, its power says "explode 184 gems" and there is not such number on the board.
The next time if this event happens and you want to go for it, be aware that you will spend around 15 hours of your week on this, the number of gems available (or perhaps already saved) and check which troops / team to choose. Two good options for this is Discord (GoW Alliance, a public server) and Tacet The Terror Youtube's channel

For the event this week, I have been using team that is very easy to obtain. assuming you’re in a guild and have been able to spend guild seals to get your guild guardians. And have gems to spend for event tokens and getting Todd greenwood to mythic.
The team is as follows
Persistence
Todd greenwood
Persistence
Persistence

With persistence fully traited all your troops get +12 to all skills each time you match 4+ gems. And Todd makes green gems boosted by all your troops. It wasn’t uncommon for all my troops to have like 400+ to all skills by the end of the fight.
Plus persistence having the passive of 50% reduced skull damage really helps with not getting blown out by a level 600 enemy making a skull match.

In addition to Adelwing, the Journey troop, I’m using Earth’s Fury with Elementalist class that disarms enemies and significantly boosts attack, Stone Viper that generates brown mana, and Kerberos that has a 40% chance to devour. Despite the difficulty looping, it’s working well.

This time has a great loop team that you can quickly obtain.
Doomed Spade
Slitherling

Sliverling is the journey guide.
Class - assassin then elementalist for survivability.

I did 157 battles for 20,007.

This is a great solution, cleaner and clearer than mine below, thank you smile

Without The Wild Queen I'm having mixed success with Sycorax / King Gobtruffle / Hawthorn behind a Titan Mountain Crusher, it's slow but safe with green & brown matches - but the sheer size of the gems investment makes this a massive task as you've said.
I've spent 850 gems to Tier 5 - but after just under 50 matches are at 4000 miles.

Good luck all!

I haven't seen the Journey event since the first appearance. According to the Taransworld page it does not appear to be in the event rotation (at least through the end of Mar 2022). My first guess would be they are re-working it because while the rewards were decent, the gem cost to get to the upper rewards was ridiculous. Also there were numerous bug reports about miles not counting properly and they made no effort to compensate players for their losses. In general the event was not received well by the player community.

For anyone looking for a team (May 2), I managed to do this with: Haunted Guardian, Xathenos, Deathclaw, and Umberwolf. Haunted Guardian keeps barrier while you buff up Xathenos, Umberwolf is only for keeping a constant darkstorm. Archmagus class w whatever the Purple/Yellow banner is.

I didn't have Life and Death weapon or The Gray King, so those might be better. Took about 5-6k gems.

The ability to get this has been nerfed massively as of this week. Just a warning to maybe wait until they potentially rebalance before spending your thousands of Gems. Pathfinder troops have had their loop ability almost removed. And the March 2024 Journey troop appears to create mana gems that aren't its own colour.

If you have the gems to be able to have enough sigils, this journey event is very easy. The main journey troop "Seekra Darkwood" can loop almost continuously by creating purple gems (enhanced by additional elves on the team) which generally ends up as an extra turn and doing damage too. Pair them with the Orbweaver class with at least level 20 to summon the darkstorm and you won't have any issues killing the monsters. The issue is that it'll just take awhile since you'll probably do ~50 damage at a time but need to take down triple digit level troops.

I just went through the enemy level 300 troops without losing a single battle.

EDIT: I did finally lose a battle in the level 400s. I learned that if I entangle the first troop through one of Orbweaver's skills, I should focus my attacks on the troops below that so that if he does get a turn, his skulls won't do any damage.

Yeah zombie, my team wouldnt last the onslaught without wild queen. I got lucky as that’s one of the few mythics I own. Sadly I only have like 5-7 of them(counting the craft achievement one and the gimmi for campaign)

The weapon I use is great because it entangles taking away their attack as well for a longer chance to get your streak going.

I switched to archer to last night for the good run and boy the 15% to hit lethal was insane because it was popping off a lot. So anyone who uses me class the best way to run is to fill up hero(first slot) then work on wild queen (second slot). Sometimes you get pretty lucky and she recharges herself meaning you keep casting her. Basically you really just want to feed queen gems to keep casting due to the mass of skulls and clearing boards for gems. It’s really effective. Because if I didn’t have that card, no way would I have gotten this achievement during this journey.

Not a complaint and it is totally relevant. It's a disclaimer. It's a matter of fact you cannot complete the achievement as given by the devs in the week without having the in game currency to complete it. It is also not uncommon for 505 to run paywall events. As an example they have three going right now (Campaign, Legends Reborn, and Kingdom Pass). Now it is entirely possible to "mine" the currency. At over 4000 hours in game time, my kingdoms are high enough to mine 20-24 gems per hour just for logging in. My weekly guild tasks earn me about another 400-500. You need to either prep well in advance for it -or- break out your wallet. It is also entirely possible to get up to 17-18k into the event and find the mileage penalties are slowing progress towards your last couple thousand.

My point with this guide has always been, you will not just be able to walk up to this event unprepared and complete it. I didn't have to spend a dime on this, but I'm sure there will be several who will be tempted to spend money to either get the achievement or the Stage 12 rewards just because they are close...which the devs are hoping. They didn't create a "free to play" game out of the goodness of their hearts. Depending on the article you read, this game generates them millions per month. Just as an example...for this time around I only bought into the shop for the first three tiers to get the new weapon and do my share of the guild event. With one day left, I'm at about 7k points (a far cry from 20k). Better to call it what it is and be prepared than find inadequate preparation tempting you to compromise your fiscal values/responsibilities....because everyone here really likes their achievements. 🙂

EDIT AT 02-MAY-2022
Journey is active this week, for the first time since November 2021.
Pathfinder troop is "Deathclaw", and needs to be fully traited to unlock "Pathfinder" perk.
I suggest your strongest class with at least one Mythic Undead (The Gray King / Xathenos).
Let me know any queries!

ORIGINAL

Journey has been added in update 6.0 as of yesterday (15-Nov-2021), and is a weekly campaign.
The progression is measured by miles travelled, hence the achievement goal smile

I'm adding this guide now to strongly recommend - as soon as you can use Gems to unlock higher tiers and unlock a troop with the third perk, "Pathfinder - Gain 2x / 2.5x / 3x in my Journey event".
This week's is Hawthorn, and will massively reduce the amount of miles needed.
You only appear to need one of these in your team, as the perk does not seem to stack with multiple cards.

EDIT TO ADD - Looking at the Leaderboard people who've travelled more than 20,000 miles appear to have played... 180 battles and upwards roll

Let me know any questions!

I've updated the description to suggest people shouldn't use multiple multiplier cards, like you said I tried and can only get the multiplier once.

That’s standard but you should get an additional 2x making it 6x total with the new scoring system

EDIT: look’s like I presumed wrong. I presumed the troop would give double score like the TOD Weapon, the Invasion Troop and the Raid Troop from the past three weeks but looks like the multiplier hasn’t been changed for this event so the rewards just require more score to complete as a guild.

This is a BS cheevo. I'm 70 battles thru, 7000+ miles with 9 battles left and the tracker says 30%. What a big waste of time. It's best to go for the renown 50,000 than this

Really wish I would have read this solution before spending a bunch of gems. No way I am getting this.

Tier 1 - 30 gems
Tier 2 - 70 gems (Cumulative - 100)
Tier 3 - 150 gems (250 total)
Tier 4 - 5 Hawthorn Guaranteed - 250 gems (500)
At this point I recommend using Major Orb of Ascension to upgrade to mythic - and not using duplicate cards, to make sure you've got more than one copy to stack!
Tier 5 - 5 Hawthorn Guaranteed - 350 gems (850)
Tier 6 - 5 Hawthorn Guaranteed - 500 gems (1350)
Tier 7 - Hawthorn Guaranteed - 500 gems (1850)

Event event.
Currently running from 11/15 to 11/22

You need to earn 20k individually.

Actually a trophy for high-level players, if you don’t have enough resources and leveling up, it’s better not to even try:
- I recommend immediately opening and upgrading the conductor card for a points multiplier.
- you need a suitable, well-pumped army.
- you will have to play approximately 200+ games, accordingly you will need tokens, for purchase you will probably need 3000+ diamonds
- The level of enemies is constantly growing - you will end up with an enemy of approximately level 600+

To score faster - according to tactics:
- try to choose enemies with the maximum number of miles
- ignore resource battles
- whenever possible, choose battles that give attack, armor, lives

Z. points are deducted if troops are lost and if the battle is played for 10+ turns

This event is quite rare. It was November 21. Now the next one is planned for May 8, 2022 . If you are going to knock out, I advise you to save some diamonds so that you can buy fights
