How to unlock the Mentor achievement in Gems of War - Definitive Guide

To level up your troops first press cn_Y when on the map screen. From there select "troops" and then select the troop you want to upgrade (You can get more troops by selecting Chests on the menu screen (requires keys) if you don't like any of your current ones). Leveling up your troops costs souls. These souls are going to be your limiting factor. The link at the bottom show how many souls it costs to level up each troop based on their rarity.

People are reporting getting one troop to level 9 and then upgrading a different troop to any level to unlock this achievement1. This can save you more than 200 Souls and is not taken into account below. If, however, you have a task to level up a troop to level 10 then completing that task will reward you with more souls than it cost to level up to 102.

The lowest amount of souls getting to level 10 will cost you is 875 for a common troop while the highest is 1305 for a Legendary troop.

The fastest way to obtain souls, besides microtransactions, is by completing Challenges. You can access Challenges by selecting a kingdom on the world map and then choosing Challenges. You'll unlock more challenges as you complete Quests. Other ways to obtain souls are by defeating enemy troops in battle (1 soul/troop), using certain troops abilities, the Treasure Chest game mode in Zhul'Kari3, using Glory in the Rewards section of the Shop (40 Souls for 10 25 Glory), and disenchanting troops (This deletes them4). (I'll add more ways to earn souls as I find them. Let me know of any ways I'm missing.)

I had an interesting glitch occur on this when I unlocked it. I had a Level 9 troop and then leveled one of my other Level 1 troops to Level 2. The achievement unlocked at that point even though I hadn't yet reached Level 10 with any troops. Just for a reference here were the troops and their rarity:

Level 9 - Dwarf Lord (Rare)
Level 1 (2) - Tyri (Epic or whatever Purple rarity is)

@RadicalSniper99 Hopefully this happens to some more people as this would significantly cut the number of souls required for the achievement.

I also had this unlock with 1 character at 9 and another at level 2. I had a boar at level 9 and a random for the level 2.

Levelled one character to 9 and then another from 2 to 3 and it unlocked. So 9 plus any one upgrade seems to work.

Same here, one on 9 and leveled another from 2 to 3 and it unlocked.

Seems like it just registers 10 level ups instead of registering a level 10 troop. Bonus.

Thumbs up for the tip - Level 9 + another character to Level 2 is still working.

Also, an excellent way to get souls as well as gems, glory and gold is to play the treasure chest game in Zhul'Kari. It costs 1 treasure map to play (which I think you get randomly as rewards - when I unlocked the kingdom I already had 7 maps in my inventory). I've earned over 100 souls + a bunch o' gems and glory from just 3 treasure chest games so far.

I had the task for upgrading to level 10 at the same time I did the glitch and the achievement unlocked but not the task. If you do have this task it is better just to go to level 10 because the reward I got for that was 500 souls.

Confirmed here finally. Worked hard to get my Goblin up to level 9 then my Serpent I got to level 2. On another note, Goblin is great to use. Only 6 green Gems to power up, and after you power attack an enemy you get another go. Wwon so many matches because of that.

Pressing Y on the map screen does nothing here?

/edit

Nevermind, didn't realise I had to be level 5 or above to do this.

Level 10 is actually not the max level for a troop, 15 is. Regardless, levelling up your troops will require souls. If you are trying to get this trophy quickly, level up a common card rather than the other card types. There are also different costumes you can wear to boost the amount of souls you obtain, all of these can be purchased in the store for diamonds or real money.

You can obtain souls in the following ways, listed in most souls to least:

- Five Staring Challenges and challenges in general
- Winning consecutive battles in the arena (more wins = better rewards)
- The store
- As task rewards
- For killing enemy troops in battle

Below I listed the amount of souls needed to level up a common card:

Level 1 = 0 souls (every troop starts here)
Level 2 = 10 souls
Level 3 = 15 souls
Level 4 = 25 souls
Level 5 = 50 souls
Level 6 = 75 souls
Level 7 = 100 souls
Level 8 = 150 souls
Level 9 = 200 souls
Level 10 = 250 souls

A level 10 common card will cost you 875 souls. A level 10 rare card will cost you 955 souls. A level 10 ultra-rare card will cost you 1,045 souls. A level 10 epic will cost you 1,165 souls and a level 10 legendary card will cost you 1,305. Feel free to level up any card type to level 10; you will unlock this trophy for any troop of any type.

Also, it is worthwhile to mention that several troops can acquire souls in battle. These troops can deal damage and acquire souls through their skills or can generate souls through their skills. The Valkyrie, for example, generates one soul + her magic skill every time she activates her mana skill. You can build a "deck" around this to boost souls if you please. I did not do this, I stuck to the tips in the GENERAL INFORMATION section of the Roadmap but feel free to pursue this tactic!

If you want to see the specific amounts per level of non-common cards then check here:
Gems of War: Troop Leveling

You can level up your troops with souls to make them more powerful. This will cost a minimum of 875 souls using a "common" rarity troop. Higher rarity troops cost more souls to level. Use this chart for reference.

unit leveling table, if you want to get a trophy quickly, you should download Common cards, but I don’t recommend it, since souls are still wasted quite a lot, and the further you go, the more difficult it is and common units are not so useful in battle.

For 8 victories in the arena you can get 400 souls, which will significantly speed up the leveling of your unit

If you play as a team of Necromancers (additional skill) with Sol Zara at the head, you can get 400-500 souls in one battle.
And 1000-1100 souls - for every 5th test in any kingdom on Military-IV difficulty.
So this trophy is completely problem-free!
