How to unlock the Shiny Distraction achievement in Gems of War - Definitive Guide

Tl; dr: It will take approximately 3,000 matches, on average, to get this achievement, until the game runs a Treasure Gnome event which will increase the odds significantly, or you gain a key from a raid boss event.

This achievement is for winning a "Gnome Vault" battle.

The Gnome Vault is accessible via the "Games" tab. In order to play a Gnome Vault battle, you must first obtain a vault key. It costs 1 vault key per Gnome Vault battle attempt.

The hardest part about this achievement will be obtaining a vault key. Vault keys are currently only obtainable as random loot from Treasure Gnomes. Treasure Gnomes are new troops released with the 3.3 update that have a chance of randomly replacing an opponent's troop any time you start a battle. You can quit out of a match immediately after seeing a gnome didn't spawn if you wish, but finishing the match (on easy difficulty at least) will likely be just as fast.

Currently, Treasure Gnomes have low chance of appearing (update: now approximately 1 in 30). Treasure Gnomes can appear in most types of battles except for Guild Wars, Tutorials, Training Battles, and The Vault. One of the developers posted in the official forums "Spawn rate is equal over all modes that can spawn gnomes. Difficulty setting does not affect spawn rate."

If you are lucky enough to have a Treasure Gnome show up in your match, do your best to ensure that it does not have a chance to cast its spell. From the official 3.3 patch notes, "Both the Treasure Gnome and Valraven have a new spell effect as part of their spell called ‘Run Away’. This allows them to run away from the battle, meaning their reward will be lost if they are not defeated quickly enough."

If you manage to kill a Treasure Gnome and win the match, in the end rewards you will get random Treasure Gnome loot. The possible Treasure Gnome loot reported in this information gathering thread ( https://community.gemsofwar.com/t/after-gnome-rebuff-and-rew... ) so far appears to be:

Vault Keys

So far: 3 vault keys from 312 drops.

If we multiply the approximate odds of getting a gnome (1 in 30) by the known estimated odds of a gnome dropping a vault key (0.96 in 100), you will have a 0.00032 chance of getting a vault key per match played, or approximately 1 in 3,125 matches. Since 1% seems like the more likely accurate odds of getting a vault key drop (.96 is based off of only 312 data points) I think it is safer to assume that the odds are really 1 in 100 and not .96 in 100, meaning the odds are closer to 1 in 3,000. Keep in mind the odds are probably slightly worse than 1 in 30 to get a Treasure Gnome based on the vague "about 1 in 30" odds given by the developers, however, so the actual odds are probably even worse than this.

If you are lucky enough for a Treasure Gnome to appear, you kill it before it escapes, you win the match, AND it happens to drop a vault key, you can finally earn this achievement. I highly suggest playing the vault battle on easy difficulty - Remember, higher difficulties do not increase gnome rewards.

Monthly, Gems of War will be featuring a "Vault Event" which will make the odds of Treasure Gnome far more likely to appear. Additionally, Vault Keys are more likely to drop during Vault Events. The extremely limited amount of time Gnomes had the increased drop rate immediately after release of the new patch is likely the only reason I and a few other players have this achievement right now.

Every 3 weeks Gems of War will feature a "Raid Boss" event. You must be in a guild for this. If your guild does enough damage to close Portal 5, one of the rewards will be a vault key. This is a very easy way of getting a vault key if you are in a semi decent guild.

I will note that the treasure gnome will take on the rarity of the troop it replaces, so it could appear as a common, rare, ultra rare, etc.

Finally, I want to add that you will not receive the gnome rewards if you manage to kill a gnome but end up ultimately losing the match. You must win the match in order to receive random gnome loot.

Quite possible, they were discussing this but I didn't think it would happen this fast. I'll update my solution when more details are confirmed.

Now I just won 2,500 gold. Looks like they increased the amount of gnomes but nerfed the prizes.

Where did you find the gnomes exactly? In which kingdom?

So I have a dumb question : at what point of the match one of the enemies "turns" into a Treasure Gnome?

By tornprince2012 on 23 Feb 2018 12:33
It is immediately upon the start of the match. In explore, you're probably going to power through because you're speed farming and just kill 'em, which is fine. But in PvP, you need to notice them or they'll get their 9 red mana and most likely get away.

@sevenjesterhats
You could, but you're likely to speed through on normal and hit the replay button than backing out to the worldmap and restart. Though, keep in mind that you have to actually start a match, it you just pay 50 gold or are VIP 3, you cannot see if a gnome will be in the match.

If anyone can recommend a preferred kingdom to explore it would be great. I assume all have the same rates but who knows.

So far most of mine have been in glacial lands (I think that's what it's called lol...been playing it all day and can't remember it now!). I have had 10-12 gnomes so far and each one has given me...absoulte s**t lol. Got to love luck based achievements!

I found 2 while finishing the challenges for Bright Forest, and that was before they made the gnomes more common. But, I'm pretty sure it's just random and the game mode/kingdom has no bearing on the odds of appearance.

So far I got 2 gnomes just playing casual PvP. Load the game - if the gnome is not there, leave, get into another game.

ALSO, with tears in my eyes I confirm that if you lose ( even after killing the Treasure Gnome ) - you get nothing after the match. cry

I think it is also worth noting that the Gnome can appear at different colours / rarities. I was grinding explore on normal difficulty = all appeared gnomes were common. But when I changed to casual pvp, Gnomes started to appear as higher rarities such as epic, depending on the team. I believe this applies to changing the explore difficulty up too (but I cannot confirm that). Just to keep in mind because I was just looking for common Gnomes before backing out of the match.

Same - about 20 gnomes now over several hundred games and nothing better than 30000 gold. On the plus side I'm now 125 levels higher than I was so when they update with the inevitable "reach level 1000" I'm a bit closer lol. Got a feeling I'll be much closer before I get this vault key.

Excellent solution. For some reason, I barely get the damn gnome. Instead of 1 out of 30, mine seems more like 1 out of 150. Twice I got 100 souls, once 2000 gold. What a shitty achievement.

At the moment I think the odds are right....i have played over 300 games today and I've got 11 gnomes. Still no vault key lol. I think the most annoying thing about this that it's luck based to get a gnome nd then further luck to get the key. I've now progressed by 190 levels with no joy. I'm getting bored now.

I updated the solution, based on the information available. It looks like it will take 2,500 matches on average to get a vault key, assuming the 1 in 30 is accurate. People without this still should honestly just wait for the gnome vault event.

Might be worth noting that you get a vault key as a reward in the raid boss I think it’s portal 5 or 6. So if you’re in a high up guild you’ll likely get the vault key from there before a friggin’ gnome drops one for you.

Confirmed Portal 5 will give a Vault Key. All guild members will get it. Can forget about Explore.

That said, better hit Portal 5 asap before the developers decide to remove it.

If you are in a Guild. The portal that breaks at 17,500 damage done to the boss in Raid Battles unlocks a vault key. My guild did that today, and I got the Gnome Vault defeated.

This weekend is another treasure gnome event. Should be easy to get it. My son recently started playing and he has gotten 3 vault keys today. Once in the vault, you have one battle. It will be Cedric Sparklesack and 3 treasure gnomes. Do it on Normal difficulty and it should be pretty easy. The only thing you have to watch for is that Cedric can spawn up to 3 Bombots.

I was given an offer today to simply buy a gnome vault key for $1.99, which I purchased with no hesitation. The battle was quick and easy on normal difficulty and took less than a minute, after which I earned the achievement. I'm at level 118 and have been playing for a long time, so your results may vary in regard to how difficult the battle is.

A lot of people are reporting that they think the odds are worse than 1 in 30. to be fair, the devs did say the odds were adjusted to "about" 1 in 30. It's possible they are more like 1 in 35 and they devs felt like rounding down when they made the information public. I believe there are some players gathering information on this so we can try to narrow down the odds to be a bit more precise. I will update the solution when that information is ready.

I had 8 vault keys. One of the more recent updates must have just thrown vault keys in with regular rewards for doing other game modes. I didn't even realize how many I had.

Popped it on my first treasure vault event yesterday.

So this should be a lot easier to obtain now. I just wish I paid more attention to where/when I got the vault keys to be more helpful, but it is nowhere near the time sink it used to be.

So ecstatic to have unlocked this achievement. I was extremely bummed out, had only seen one gnome (2 days after 3.3. went live), that one gave 20,000g. Found it in explore. This was my 2nd gnome and i almost didn't notice it because it was in the 4th slot of a ranked pvp match. When i did notice it, it was extremely hard to kill because i couldn't target it with the team I was using but by continuing to mana drain him with Cockatrice, i kept him from getting the mana to run away.

You're so focused on the gnome that you make mistakes/take damage or lose troops from the regular defenders on the other team... I lost my first troop and it was not easy after that.

I was in PVP with the weekly event team:

Alchemist
Moneylender
The Dragon Soul
Dragon Cruncher

(against what I thought was an all dragon team!) Instead of Krystenax in 4th slot, it was the gnome. He dropped a vault key and I almost died! I immediately jumped into the vault "game" even though i had been up all night playing, didn't even think about difficulty or know what troops would be in there, just was racing because i wanted to try to be among the first 10 to complete the achievement on TA (something I've never done with any achievement).

I had chosen my favorite fast PvP team, usually few turns on Warlord 4 so chose vault on Warlord 1 (I'm only level 580, only 1 true mythic and 3 ascended mythics), but didn't know that Cedric Sparklesack had a skill that knocked your last troop to the front. This was TERRIBLE for me because my team I went in with was (all fully traited):

The Great Maw
Cockatrice
Poison Master
Scorpius

When Sparklesack pulled Scorpius to the front I already had cleared out two gnomes, but then all mana and whole loop was broken by Scorpius taking all the mana in the front. So I just keep getting Poison Master's mana full, exploding, and praying. FInally, with both bottom 2 troops poisoned, I was able to instakill using Scorpius. Achievement unlocked. 8th tracked gamer on TrueAchievements to get it.

For somebody who's never had this feeling before, I'm pretty stoked! Thanks for taking the time to put together a solution for folks, Vega -- but yeah, a lot remains unknown about the vault "game" and its rewards.

My loot was 4 event keys, 100 gems, and 20,000 gold in addition to normal xp/gold/souls.

Highest TrueAchievement Ratio ever!

Gnome Vault battles can be accessed from the "Games" option in the menu, but can only be fought if you have a Vault Key. This is where is gets tricky. These are extremely, extremely rare. Treasure Gnomes will show up randomly when you are fighting any sort of battle, though the chance they will drop a key is slim to none. You'll usually just get some gems or gold. Your best bet to get a key is to complete Stage 7 of an Invasion event, or as a Guild close Portal 5 during a Raid Boss event. Check "Siegebreaker" and "Godslayer" for more info on those events. This will be a guaranteed reward.

Now, once you've earned the Vault Key you can fight in the Gnome Vault. You have to win this fight, so playing on the easiest difficulty might be a good idea just to get the achievement out of the way. I don't actually think higher difficulties increase the rewards from the gnomes (just from the battle itself) so any fight in here is probably best on the easiest setting.

See this FAQ for more info on Treasure Gnomes and Vault Keys.

The most problematic thing is getting the key. It drops randomly or can be a reward at high levels of guild events. I still don’t understand whether it falls out of the dwarfs’ bag or just randomly - I didn’t really see when it fell out.
Well, then it’s not difficult to win against the dwarfs if your troops are more or less normal.

I received the key in a PVP battle when I was already rank 2. So they fall out in battles.

The Key to the Dwarf Vault has never randomly dropped out to me. As far as I understand, this key can be obtained as a reward at the later stages of the following events:
- Profit, it’s in the Game menu, a single event, with a time limit and quite rare, I got the first key in it
- Raid Boss, a guild event, you can’t handle it alone, but if the guild is large and at least half of it is actively playing, it’s quite possible to get it. Here I received another key
- The invasion is also a guild event.
If you entered the Vault for the first time, using only one available key, it is better not to tempt fate and set the difficulty of the battle with Sparksum to “Normal”. The fight itself is not difficult. Although I had a second key and tried it (after receiving trophy) on "Warlord IV" - it was more difficult (Cedric summons up to three Bombbots), but not particularly.
