Time consuming but easily obtainable in couch play with minimal effort.
Set up "Battle" under Couch Play, and select the character you need to lvl up, add a CPU player to your team with the difficulty set to 6, add an opponent with their difficulty set to 1, pick the lava level, and simply press A for a rematch after your CPU teammate beats yout opponent.
Most characters need to reach lvl. 15 to unlock their lore, some require lvl. 19, a few characters have their lore unlocked at lvl. 9.
Majority of the locations will unlock just from playing on the maps you you already have, some require you to play through the campaigns.
It's a grind, but not a difficult one.
