Weapon upgrades are available by pressing X on the lobby screen (Cadaver Gear), then clicking on the weapon you want and pressing X again. There are various unlocks there, like larger magazines and higher damage.
If you're going for completing the game, you might want to upgrade the shotgun's reload speed first (since you're going to need to buy all upgrades anyway and the shotgun REALLY sucks until you get that upgrade). If not, focus on the SMG until you unlock the assault rifle and replace the shotgun with that ASAP.

Simply go into the Cadaver Gear menu, select the gun you want to upgrade, and press 
to access modifications. Select the upgrade you want, make sure you are a high enough level and have enough gold to purchase it, and upgrade by again pressing . Purchase a single upgrade and this trophy will pop.
