How to unlock the Perfect Win achievement in Golden Axe - Definitive Guide

There's only one way to get this achievement: be cheap!
You're going to have to constantly SAVE and spam enemies.
Here are some tips to get the job done:

1. SAVE CONSTANTLY. After every felled enemy, before every boss battle and especially after/at the beginning of each stage to retain the least amount of damage possible. If you screw up, reload your save.

2. Memorize the location of thieves (little gnomes). If you know you can get potions from theives up ahead, don't be afraid to use what you have. If at all possible, hit thieves and leave potions on ground. Then attack the boss with magic and pick up the potions to attack him again.

3. Spam with beasts. Each beast in the game that you can ride is very powerful. If you practice, you can avoid being hit by relentlessly using them against enemies and even keep your beast all the way to the boss. Use them on the boss without mercy. Dragons work the best.

4. Charge! Charging an enemy can surprise them and get them down on the ground quickly. It also works against bosses and while riding beasts. Just quickly press forward TWICE (double tap). In one quick motion, tap forward, then again holding it forward on your second tap. You will run toward your opponent where you can then hit the attack button for a headbutt if you're the Dwarf or jump kick if you're the Amazon.

5. Who's the best fighter in the game? The DWARF! Use no one else! Trust me, it seems unlikely, but he's the best!

6. When an enemy rushes toward you, jump toward them and rapidly press attack to create a wide range of attack for you to swing your axe into their forehead. Axe? Because you're using the DWARF!!

7. Use the "Zig-Zag Technique". This is most important tip of all. In most arcade-style 2D beat 'em ups, the zig-zag technique is when the player moves up and down the playfield to get an enemy shaken from a direct path toward them. As the enemy gets closer to the player and finally does line up with them, the player can unleash a flurry of attacks. The next time you need to get away from an enemy, use the zig-zag technique to gain an advantage and turn the tables on them!

8. When you start a "new game", do this achievement the easy way and give yourself custom 5 lives and continues.

I saved after every throw, now with 5 lives on stage 9 and 3 parts of my healthbar still shining, not too bad at all.

Quite a tricky one to get but with the use of the save feature and a little patience - you shouldn't have too much trouble getting it.

Make sure you determine when it's a good time to save - preferably when your in safety and after each level. Try to avoid being cornered or attacked from both sides - use an aerial attack when needed to escape.

Collect as many of the blue and green potions as you can and try to save your high level magic attacks from bosses or groups of large enemies.

This game was really short, shorter than I expected but it was enjoyable as well, just takes time.

i just got this by upping my energy to 5 and lives to 5.
i would recommend killing each set of enemies then saving on every screen.
hold onto your magic attacks for big groups of enemies and boss fights.
also try and stay mounted on a steed for as long as possible, with most of them if you spam the steeds attack and stay still the enemies will continuously run into them until they die.
i personal prefer the blue dragon that spits at the floor.

This achievement is also quite easy to get in co-op.

Just let your friend do all the work while you try and avoid the enemies.

The only thing that should slightly trouble you is the bosses so save up magic so you can make these battles easier.

This game is very easy to boost over Live Co op or couch co op. Start the game normally and set "Lives" to 5 and "Energy" to 5. Then play the game normally until one player gets down to 2 lives. Have the other character fight most of the enemies until the end of the game and you defeat Death=Adder. The end and Achievement unlocked. If the other player needes it, just rinse and repeat. The game takes like 15 minutes to defeat. Or you can do it the hard way like the guys before mentioned. Either way works.

Good hunting.

I did this by myself in co-op with two controllers, since I needed to finish the whole game, I figured why not try.

You're going to need to keep one hand on each controller at all times. Player one (achievement-getter, you) will mostly just run around, while you try to kill with player two. Turn auto-fire on in the settings of player two. You'll save your fingers this way and not risk accidentally not continuing after losing all lives. It probably doesn't matter which characters you pick, but I used dwarf for player one and barbarian for player two.

My typical method for fighting was setting player two in the middle, holding X, trying to switch directions when needed, and having player one run around player two a bit if he is being chased to get the attention on player two. More often than not, ALL of the enemies will focus on one player, which is good, because it doesn't matter how many times player two dies.

I was able to get to stage 5 with full health on player one (after getting one bar back from a green gnome in stage 4). My worst stage was stage 7, because I lost one life by falling down the gap and my other life immediately after when you fight two giants in the tight space, and I was too stubborn to use my magic. Now I would recommend using the lesser of your two available magic abilities (you should be collecting magic with both characters, but try to fill up one at a time) if you find yourself in a tough spot, like a lot of enemies in a small area. There are plenty of blue gnomes throughout the game. I did not lose anything on the mini boss at the end of that level because there is so much room to move around.

The final boss is a little troubling, as there can be quite a few enemies on the screen at the beginning and the boss has a ranged attack, so as soon as the boss starts moving around, use at least one player's magic (you may want to save one for when skeletons arrive). Once you have sufficient space to move around, try to focus on keeping player one perpendicular to the boss, or you will have to jump when he uses the ranged attack. It is possible to trap the boss by holding X at his feet after he is down, but it may be difficult to find the exact spot.

You can do this in co-op or solo play. Solo play tends to be easier, unless you are very good at the game. The reason solo is more manageable is all thanks to the 'Save State' feature in all of the SEGA titles. You are going to abuse this.

Before you begin the game, set your Lives/Energy to the max. Every time you clear an enemy or a small group of enemies, make a save state. There are only 3 slots available, but it should be more than enough. Once you get to bosses and later levels, you can even save state after getting a single hit in, as some mobs will be tough to defeat. You will get this trophy at the conclusion as long as you don't lose all 5 Lives. Don't worry about losing a little Energy on each level, as you will get the opportunity to score some of it back from the extra in-between stages you encounter. A good goal is to reach the final level with all 5 Lives intact and then you can be a little bolder with your tactics. But make sure to keep some save states in case something goes very wrong.

A few extra tips: Always keep your mounts that you acquire throughout the level. Using your save state, do not allow them to get away from you. They are extremely helpful and will make boss encounters much easier. Don't let enemies get too close, and just time your attacks. Save your Magic attacks for difficult mobs or boss encounters. Save states will rescue you from any mistakes. If enemies charge, simply move up or down to avoid them. The final boss can be defeated if you get him stuck against a wall. Stand right next to him and repeatedly hit him before he gets up. He may get a lucky strike in every-now-and-then, but it won't matter much.

Let me know if there is anything else I should add to the guide!

Imagine how crazy hard this would be without the Save states, lol.

Ha ha absolutely. Imagine Streets of Rage 2's 800k one :P

An extra tip: Gilius' (dwarf) running headbutt seems to take Death Adder down every time. Clearing out the skeletons and the hammer guy are really important, but once they went down. I managed to take out DA this way with very little damage. I think I got hit once when I mistimed it.

This is where you will really have to take advantage of the save feature.

You want to get to Stage 9 with all 5 lives left. In stages 3, 5 & 7 it will be okay to lose 1 or 2 bars of Energy (Health) as during the bonus stages (4, 6 & 8) you will be able to pick up some health from the thieves.

Save after every enemy that you kill flawlessly to prevent having to fight them again if you revert to a save later.

When you get on a steed, stay on it until the end of the stage. Save after every kill and revert to a previous save if you have been knocked from your steed. To avoid being knocked off of your steed by a running enemy's shoulder charge, press and on the d-pad so the enemy will walk towards you until he/she is close enough to whip/breath fire on.

The only enemies that do not charge are the Knights and Death Adder, so no need to move up and down on these enemies. Just hold to use the dragons attack.

For an easier way to kill Death Adder (it is very unlikely you will still be on your draggon) kill all the other enemies first. Use your magic to take out the initial enemies and then the skeletons will arrive. They will move faster than Death Adder, as he will stop to roll a little fireball at you, so move to the top/bottom of the screen to avoid Death Adder and attack the skeletons.

Once the skeletons are dead, get in close to Death Adder and hold ; you are quicker than him so you will always be able to attack him after he stands up again, before he is able to attack you. So just get him to the edge of the screen and hold and he is done for.

This can also be done in Co-op but as there is no save function, it is easier to do this solo.

Boost the lives up to 5 and health bar up to 5 in the custom match options and play with a friend. Use the same strategy as Survivor to prolong your lives. Conserve those magic pots for the final boss or any tricky situation.
